CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 3:04 p.m. by Chair Roni Bartlett.

VISITORS ADDRESS THE COMMITTEE
RJ Brown informed the Committee that the circus is coming to town for Henry Knighton Days.
Most likely they will set up in the Boise Veneer yard. The Tall Ships will be here April 20th for
four days.

Steve Johannsen pointed out that there is very little St. Helens merchandise to offer for sale.
He would like to work with the Tourism Committee to create merchandise that could be sold at
various businesses.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
MOTION – Committee Member Dahlgren moved to approve the May 13, 2010 and August 12,
2010 Tourism Committee Minutes. Committee Member Pereira seconded.

All in favor; none opposed; motion carries.

PRESENTATION BY PAN DRAGGERS CAR CLUB SEEKING SUPPORT FOR A “CAR
SHOW/CRUISE THE TOWN” EVENT MID TO LATE SUMMER 2011 TO BENEFIT LOCAL
CHARITIES
Toby Steinhart. The Pan Draggers Car Club is proposing a charity car show to benefit the
Senior Center Meals on Wheels and Columbia Pacific Food Bank. Steinhart is hoping to work
with one of them to piggy back on their insurance. There is a large community of hot rod
enthusiasts and music lovers. He is looking for input and suggestions from the Tourism
Committee, since this is their first year.

City Administrator Olsen thought it sounded like a great idea. Street closure paper work is
important. Peiper Ramsdell and Insurance Services Northwest both have special event
insurance if they are still in need of it. The City may be able to help with trash containers and
port-a-potties.

Dennis will assist with media support and promotion.

Discussion of event location. Steinhart plans to line cars up along S. 1st Street. Chair Bartlett
encouraged vendors to be placed on The Plaza Square and the beer garden on The Strand.
They are also attempting to use the Boise Veneer lot.

Dahlgren spoke of the Elks car show. The Elks go to local businesses to request small
donations. Along with their donation, that business gets the opportunity to vote for their favorite
car. The car owner receives a trophy. Dahlgren suggests giving a portion of the proceeds to
charities and keeping a portion to fund next year’s car show to start a revenue stream. The
event will benefit restaurants down here but it usually does not benefit the hotels.

Steinhart talked about using an old storefront to display vintage photos of the area.

Dennis will follow-up with Steinhart.

REVIEW OF REVENUES – DECEMBER & JANUARY
The Committee reviewed the revised revenues.

TOURISM MONTHLY REPORT BY AMBER DENNIS, TOURISM DIRECTOR FOR
DECEMBER 2010 & JANUARY 2011
Dennis reviewed the December 2010 and January 2011 report.

It was the consensus of the committee to allow Dennis to attend the requested conferences.

CONTEST IDEA FOR KIDS AND ADULTS, “WHAT IS GREAT ABOUT MY TOWN?”
SUBMIT AS ART, PHOTOS, ESSAYS, ETC. AND ADD TO WEBSITE – GINNY CARLSON
Carlson would like to hold a seasonal photo contest to build a photo bank for the website and
advertising. There would be little cost because it would primarily be advertised on the website.

It was the consensus of the Tourism Committee to hold an ongoing seasonal photo contest.
Flyers should be posted in addition to marketing on the website. Someone from the Committee
needs to spend the time to put it together. Dennis can copy contest rules from another
organization doing it. The initial advertising can be done via Facebook and Twitter.

Carlson and Dennis will work together on developing the photo contest. Dennis suggested
asking the Arts & Cultural Commission to judge the contest.

Discussion of having an art show. Neither Councilor Martyn nor Chair Bartlett believe that art
shows have done well in the community. They could display art at area businesses or City
buildings and offer for sale.

PEDAL NATION BIKE SHOW
It was the consensus of the Committee to have a booth at the Pedal Nation Bike Show again
this year.

Dennis will see if Washington County and Columbia County would like to share a booth. She
will send information out to the Committee for volunteer support.

OTHER BUSINESS
Agenda “Parking Lot” update.

Follow up, McCormick Park. This will be added as an agenda item for the next meeting.
Dennis will request a report from Public Works Director Dale Goodman of how the $25,000
contribution to the ball field lights was used.

Olsen reported that Columbia County Economic Team, SHEDCO, and he met with Columbia
Pacific Economic Development Council and the Business Oregon Regional Development
Officer to talk about the Main Street Program. The City is in the exploring phase. There is an
AmeriCorps Vista program that can be applied for to get a volunteer to work with. The cost is
between $9000-11,000 per year for 40 hours a week. They are working on an application for
that. The deadline is February 18th. The City cannot be the long term person to run the
program but can offer seed money and get the program off the ground.

The next regularly scheduled meeting is Thursday, March 10, 2011 at 3:00 p.m., in Council
Chambers.
