                – RF issues (overlap, interference from other sources)
                       Inevitable to an extent in unlicensed bands
                – Seamless roaming around campus
           •   Upcoming 802.11n high-speed protocol
           •   Options for a next-generation wireless LAN are needed

           •   Industry answer to the issues we see is the “thin” architecture
                – Access points controlled by a central pool of controllers
                – Controllers set channels, RF power output dynamically
                – Provides quick response to changes in environment
                – Network traffic is tunneled back to the controllers
                       Allows for seamless roaming between access points
           •   Limitations of unlicensed radio bands will still exist

           •   802.11n high-speed wireless standard
                – IEEE protocol for 100-200Mbps wireless
                – Currently in draft 2.0
                       General agreement that this is close to final standard
                – Works in both 2.4 and 5Ghz bands
                – Uses 40Mhz channels, 20Mhz optionally
                       802.11a/b/g use 20Mhz channels
                       Wider channels can cause issues with existing deployments
                – 802.11a/b/g clients can significantly degrade 802.11n thruput
                       Placing 802.11n devices alone on 5Ghz may be warranted
                       Access points require 1Gbps uplinks, increased power
                          New switches will be needed to support this
                          Existing switches can support reduced level of operation

                – Use thin architecture for improved management, mobility
                – Provide 802.11n coverage
                       2.4Ghz
                          802.11b/g/n coverage using 20Mhz channels
                       5Ghz
                          802.11n coverage using 40Mhz channels
                          Drop 802.11a support
                – Use Aruba Networks as equipment provider
                       Industry leader
                       Compatible management strategy
                       Wide selection of devices
                       Lower cost than competition
