1          SCOPE
           This specification details the requirements for the repair and reconditioning of snatch
           blocks for use underground in winch snatching.

2          TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS TO BE SPECIFIED BY THE ENGINEER
           The following requirements shall be specified on every invitation to tender, contract or
           order:
           •      Title, number, date, and issue of this specification.
           •      The snatch block diameter.
           •      The relevant drawing number.
           •      The colour of the paint topcoat.

3          DEFINITIONS
           For the purpose of this specification the following definitions shall apply:

           AWS                   :   American Welding Society

           OEM                   :   Original Equipment Manufacturer

           The following terms are defined in the General Conditions of Contract:
           •      Anglo American, Company, Contractor, Engineer, Approved.

4          REQUIREMENTS

4.1        GENERAL
           Repaired and reconditioned snatch blocks shall be restored to the manufacturer’s
           specification.

           Unserviceable components shall be replaced with genuine spares obtained from the
           original manufacturer. Alternatives shall be approved by the Engineer and shall comply
           with the original manufacturer’s materials, designs, dimensions and dimensional
           tolerances.

4.2        DOCUMENTATION
           Prior to commencement of reconditioning, the contractor shall have the latest issues of
           the following approved documentation:

4.2.1      Detail and assembly drawings showing OEM configuration, materials, dimensions,
           dimensional tolerances and test procedures for the items being reconditioned. Differences
           or incompatibilities shall be referred to the Engineer for written direction before proceeding
           with reconditioning.

4.2.2      A quality plan which shall comply with the requirements of AA STD 100.

4.2.3      Weld procedures which shall comply with the requirements of AWS D.14.3.

4.2.4      Reconditioning methodology details of reconditioning methods shall be submitted for
           review and approval.

4.2.5      A failure analysis report if required by the Engineer, and which substantiates the cause of
           failure, shall be submitted with the tender.

4.2.6      An initial inspection report shall be completed before work is commenced and shall
           contain details of the extent of the proposed reconditioning, together with a missing
           component report of items not supplied with, or on the unit submitted for reconditioning. The
           report shall be submitted with the tender.

           No reconditioning work shall continue without written approval of the Engineer.

4.2.7      Test reports and documentation shall be as required by Clause 6 of this specification.

4.3        RECONDITIONING CONTRACTOR REQUIREMENTS
4.3.1      Workshop Facilities: The Contractor shall have all the necessary equipment i.e. crane(s),
           welding equipment, tools, test and inspection equipment necessary to carry out the required
           scope of work as determined by the Engineer. In addition, specially demarcated areas for
           stripping, painting, storage etc. shall be provided.

4.3.2      Workshops shall comply with required national mine safety standards.

4.3.3      Workmanship of the reconditioning processes shall comply with the OEM's requirements
           and standards.

4.3.4      Supervisory staff: A minimum of one qualified staff member shall be present and
           responsible for all reconditioning processes.

4.3.5      Non-destructive testing personnel shall be qualified for the procedures and testing
           methods to be employed.

4.3.6      Technical and service backup: the Contractor shall have the necessary equipment,
           personnel and resources to provide technical and service backup to the Engineer at all
           times should the need arise.

4.4        RECONDITIONING SCOPE
4.4.1      Reconditioned components shall comply with the requirements of the relevant OEM part.

4.4.2      Reconditioning of the snatch block shall be in accordance with the requirements of this
           specification to the extent specified by the Engineer.

4.4.3      Packing, marking and delivery to the Company in accordance with the requirements of
           Clause 7.

4.4.4      Traceability of all new and re-used components shall be maintained during all
           reconditioning processes.

4.4.5      Identification: The Contractor shall ensure that, where applicable, the OEM model, serial
           and part numbers and mine identification numbers are not removed, defaced nor altered
           during reconditioning processes.

           Should identification plates etc. be damaged or removed during reconditioning processes,
           they shall be replaced with all details clearly and permanently visible and accurate.

4.4.6      Sub-contractors shall be approved by the Engineer.

4.5        MANDATORY WORK
           The following work shall be mandatory:
           •      Collection from the Company
           •      Disassembly and cleaning
           •      Component inspection/assessment
           •      Re-assembly
           •      Final inspection and testing
           •      Corrosion protection
           •      Packing and marking
           •      Delivery to the Company

4.6        MANDATORY REPLACEMENTS
           Unless otherwise specified by the Engineer, the following replacements shall be
           mandatory:
           •      Bearings
           •      Circlips
           •      Nuts
           •      Chain link(s)
           •      Sheave shaft
           •      Tail spacer

4.7        STRIPPING AND CLEANING
           Snatch blocks shall be completely stripped and cleaned of all rust, scale and foreign
           matter by means of solvent immersion, sand blasting or wire brushing. Care shall be
           taken to ensure that machined surfaces are not damaged.

           The dismantling of welded components shall be effected by grinding or sawing and shall
           not cause damage to the principal components.

4.8        CHEEK PLATES
           The cheek plates shall be inspected visually for cracks, wear and damage and by
           mechanical means for misalignment.

           Repairs to cracks shall be effected by "Vee" grinding to 60° included angle and welding to
           an Approved Welding Procedure. All welding shall be ground to the profile shown on the
           relevant drawing.

4.9        SHACKLES AND SHACKLE PINS
           Shackles shall be visually inspected for wear and damage and, if necessary, rejected and
           replaced. Any indentation greater than 3mm shall be cause for rejection.

           Pins shall be visually inspected for wear and damage and if necessary rejected and
           replaced.

           Neither welding nor grinding shall be performed on shackles or pins.

4.10       SHEAVES
           Sheaves shall be visually inspected for wear and damage and, if necessary, rejected and
           replaced. Any reduction of the root diameter greater than 5mm and any cracks in the
           sheave shall be cause for rejection.

           The total indicator run out of the sheave shall not be greater than 4mm.

           The bearing housing in the sheave bore shall not be re-worked.

4.11       SHEAVE PINS
           Sheave pins shall be inspected for wear and damage and replaced if necessary. Pins with
           a straightness deformation of greater than 0,5mm over the whole length shall be
           replaced.

           Sheave pins shall not be restored by re-working.

4.12       TAIL SPACER
           Tail spacers shall be visually inspected for wear and damage and, if necessary, rejected
           and replaced. Spacers with a straightness deformation of greater than 0,5mm over the
           whole length shall be cause for rejection.

4.13       CORROSION PROTECTION
           Surfaces to be coated shall be cleaned and degreased.

4.13.1     Primer shall be a single pack water based acrylic etch primer applied to a minimum dry
           film thickness of 35µm.

4.13.2     Topcoat shall be a high gloss enamel applied to a minimum dry film thickness of 25µm.

           The colour shall be as specified by the Engineer.

5          QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS
           The requirements of AA STD 100 shall apply.

6          TEST AND INSPECTION METHODS

6.1        DIMENSIONAL
           Snatch blocks shall be checked to ensure that they conform to the dimensional
           requirements of the relevant OEM drawing.

6.2        OPERATION
           Snatch blocks shall be tested to ensure that all functions operate freely and efficiently in
           accordance with the OEM specification.

7          PACKING AND MARKING

7.1        PACKING
           The method of packing shall protect the equipment against damage and adverse climatic
           conditions during transportation and storage.

           Test documentation shall be sealed in a suitable plastic envelope attached to the unit.

7.2        MARKING
           The Contractor shall hard stamp the following information on a suitable position on one of
           the cheekplates:
           •      Contractor's name or logo
           •      Date of repair / reconditioning
           •      Company order number
