TriPoint Physician Pavilion Update
The Physician Pavilion at TriPoint will hold a Community Open House event on Saturday,
May 1, from 9 am – 12 noon. In addition to health screenings, exercise demonstrations, and
balance testing, there will be tours of the Outpatient Rehabilitation Center, the Community
Health Center, the Wellness Institute, and the Resource Center. Several physicians will also
be in their offices to meet and greet visitors.
Lake Health Imaging Update
New technology continues to improve the capability, comfort, and safety of imaging at Lake
Health.
Volume Navigation, or V-Nav, offers breakthrough accuracy in locating suspicious
areas by combining real-time ultrasound imaging with previously acquired MRI or
CT information. Combined and manipulated, these images provide a better live view.
A GPS guidance system allows the ultrasound technician to pinpoint specific
locations from previous scans for the accurate diagnosis of cancer in hidden areas
such as the kidneys, liver, pancreas, and spleen; guides doctors during biopsies and
kidney stone removal; and is used to review changes in lesions or suspicious areas. V-
Nav technology is available at West, TriPoint, and the Mentor Campus.
Advancing patient safety, recently all of Lake Health’s CT scanners received new
“smart” technology designed to select the best image scan while automatically
delivering the lowest dose of radiation possible – reducing the patient’s radiation dose
up to 40 percent.
TriPoint’s new large bore MRI features a larger but shorter bore and muffles machine
sounds for improved patient comfort, but provides the same high quality imaging as
smaller bore machines. West, TriPoint, and the Mentor Campus all offer 1.5 Tesla
MRI with 3-D work stations.
The 64-slice CT scanner is the preferred technology for coronary artery angiography.
It is advantageous for patients without a definitive answer/diagnosis from previous
tests, and for patients with atypical symptoms or a lower risk for cardiovascular
issues. The 16-slice CT scanners with fluoroscopy allow for faster CT biopsy
procedures. Both multi-slice CT scanners are available at TriPoint and West. The
Mentor Campus offers 16-slice CT with high resolution.
To monitor cancer, heart, and brain conditions, TriPoint offers new 3-dimensional CT
imaging.
Lake County’s only combined PET/CT scanner is available at the Mentor Campus.
TriPoint has two fluoroscopy suites. One suite is larger, has less equipment positioned
above the patient for increased comfort, can be operated remotely, and has an
attached private patient preparation area.
Digital mammography, preferred for pre-menopausal women with dense breasts, is
available at West, TriPoint, and the Mentor Campus. The technician can see the
image on the monitor in seconds, ensuring the best view possible is sent to the
radiologist for evaluation. A new computer-aided detection technology reviews the
image for possible suspicious areas and highlights them for review by the radiologist,
much like a “preliminary opinion” from the computer. Low-dose X-ray
mammography is available at the Madison and Chardon Campuses.
The Women’s Diagnostic Center at TriPoint offers a wide range of services from
mammography, ultrasound, and DEXA bone density scanning to the newest and most
comfortable image-guided breast biopsy, done without the need for incisions or
general anesthetic. In addition, TriPoint’s dressing rooms attach directly to the
mammography suite for privacy.
Lake Health Opens Outpatient Osteoporosis Centers
According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, more than 25 million Americans
currently suffer from osteoporosis, and about half the women and one quarter of the men can
expect to get osteoporosis. Lake Health has opened two outpatient osteoporosis clinics: one
at West and one at TriPoint. Nurse practitioners run the clinics in collaboration with medical
director Dr. Mitchell Nahra. The clinics, in partnership with the American Orthopaedic
Association's Own The Bone™ program, provide comprehensive evaluation, screening, and
treatment for osteoporosis, as well as patient education in nutrition, exercise, smoking
cessation, and medication. The goal is to help patients prevent fractures by stopping or
slowing bone loss, maintaining bone strength, and eliminating factors that contribute to falls.
The clinics are open Monday through Friday from 8 am - 4:30 pm. A physician referral is
required.
Comprehensive Balance Center
Lake Health plans to open a Comprehensive Balance Center in the second quarter of 2010.
ENT physicians and audiologists will provide comprehensive medical and diagnostic-based
treatment, and Lake Health physical therapists with vestibular rehabilitation certification will
provide evaluation and diagnostic-based treatment.
The need for the new Comprehensive Balance Center is based on the following data.
Balance issues are the #1 reason for physician visits by patients over 65.
Balance issues account for 5 to 8 million physician visits each year.
Almost 8 million American adults report a chronic problem with balance.
1 in 3 senior citizens experiences a fall each year. Falls are the leading cause of
injury-related deaths among the elderly.
Patients with balance issues are seen by up to 5 providers before a correct diagnosis is
made.
Primary care physicians, neurologists, and other physicians are frustrated by patients
whose balance doesn’t improve, and patients are frustrated by their own lack of
improvement.
Common complaints from patients with balance issues include benign vertigo;
degenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s Disease, cerebral palsy, and multiple
sclerosis; head injury; inner ear problems; and stroke.
Currently there is no balance center in Lake, Geauga, or Ashtabula Counties.
Cardiovascular Grand Rounds
The Cardiovascular Grand Rounds will be held at 12 noon on Thursday, April 29. Presented
by Dr. Rami Akhrass, cardiothoracic surgeon, this event is a public forum to discuss open-
heart surgery outcomes at Lake Health, named Best in Ohio for Cardiac Surgery by
HealthGrades.
