Laurens State Bank
Hosts Pizza Party
for 4th Graders
On May 13th, the Laurens State Bank
hosted a Pizza Party for Mrs. Behrens'
fourth grade class. The party ended at the
bank with Pat Sullivan giving a tour of the
facilities.
The class has been the bank's Partner In
Education for the 2008-2009 school year.
The Laurens State Bank opened a savings
account in each student's name at the
beginning of the school year.
Kris Etheridge visited the classroom
every other Wednesday and helped
students learn how to make entries into
their passbook. Those who wished to save
brought money they had earned doing
chores or money they received as gifts. Pat Sullivan shows the 4th graders the different functions of the vault.

Schaller Red Hats: Destination LAURENS!
By: Susie Mayou
The Schaller Red Hats made a trip to
Laurens on Tuesday, May 19th for their
monthly meeting. A few months ago, one of
the ladies heard about the hand-made fishing
lures sold at Streeter's. She made a trip to
Laurens to buy lures for her adult children
who are avid fishermen. Phyllis had no idea
that she would know the owner of Streeter's
when she arrived. As the conversation
moved along, she asked about eateries and
possibilities for their red hat group, and
passed the information along to someone in
charge of scheduling.
With a few phone calls and a bit of
planning, the group of gals headed north
east to check out Laurens. Seventeen of
the twenty three made the trip, and their
purple outfits and red hats brightened up
main street for the afternoon. My, were they
surprised to see "WELCOME SCHALLER
RED HATS" on the Chamber's new sign as
you enter town!
They had lunch at Deb's for their Tuesday special of pan-fried chicken and fixin's. What a delicious start! Next, they stopped in
at Streeter's Specialties to see Susie Mayou's
shop. Susie grew up in Schaller, and many
of the ladies were anxious to see what her
shop had to offer (besides fishing lures!).
They each were given complimentary bags
consisting of information and samples
from eight local businesses. They were
thrilled with the red bags, compliments of
Pocahontas Mutual!
Their next stop was Heart 'n Home
where they were treated to "Wine-a-rita"
slush mix. They sure seemed to be enjoying
their trip!
The last stop on the way out of town was
Town and Country Floral. They were all
very excited to see the town greenhouse.
There is so much to see and do in
Laurens, that they may have to come back
for another trip this fall. Laurens really does
live up to its name, "the busiest little town"
in Iowa.
Thanks to everyone who made this a
memorable visit! I know they will be talking
Biggest Little Paper In Town! about this trip for weeks to come. 13
