Generally speaking, there were three ways you could go vis-a-vis librarianship in the old days: academic, public, or special. Special meant business, law, or medical, and there was a separate, more educationally focused curriculum for school librarians. A few months ago, the author started keeping track of job titles she spotted on library-oriented mailing lists, RSS feeds, and the like. Most of the esoteric job titles emanate from academic libraries. However, regardless of where you would like to work and despite the explosion in new, intriguing job titles, the universal truth in this economy is that the job market for information professionals is not good, and it shows few signs of improvement.
