					Writing for NCEA
AS9006 Drama1.1 Demonstrate appropriate drama techniques

Some basic principles behind writing in the subject of Drama
 We all have a responsibility to teach literacy in our subject.
 Writing is not just writing down what we know. It is an integral part of
the thinking process. We help formulate our ideas when we write.
 Students have to be actively taught to write successfully in NCEA
     drama.

Writing as supporting evidence in NCEA Drama Standards
 Writing required as a condition of gaining the standard needs to be
focused on the requirements of the standard. This will come from
careful analysis of the standard’s achievement criteria and explanatory
      notes.
 Students do not need to be asked for screeds of recording of every
      event in the task.
 There is dubious value in the diary type journal that merely records
      events.
 As a general rule, students need to record drama decisions, justify
them and evaluate them. This includes things trialled and rejected.

The scaffolded writing tasks
 These were found to be very successful in trials last year.
 Short cutting the process generally seriously compromised their
      success.
 Of key importance was discussion of the exemplar answers. These
gave students a steer on the level and type of writing necessary.
 Clear and detailed descriptors or questions delineating what was
required in each section were also important.
 There should be only one question per box. Or put another way, a
separate box for each question. (Students often answer only the first
      question.)
 The assistance with converting the information in the boxes to a
connected paragraph is preparation for the type of writing required in
      the external exam, AS90011.
 The templates are only an interim measure while students master the
strategies to complete all of the stages to writing paragraphs
independently. The supports they offer could be gradually withdrawn as
      student skills increase.

However:
 This is not prescriptive or an official line.
 There are other ways and many of you will be successfully using other
     methods.
 Check for yourself whether this fits the bill or if there are ideas here you
     can use.
Requirements beyond the actual performance for AS90006 (Drama 1.1)

Always remember that there is the option to present this evidence orally or
visually instead.

   1. There needs to be a statement of the intention of the performance at
      the outset.
   2. The key word is “appropriate”. The supporting evidence must be
something that assists the understanding that the selected techniques
are appropriate for the role and the situation in the performance.
   3. Although this standard does not require any ongoing collection of
evidence, ideally the chart below would be used two or three times
during the process to reflect several trials of techniques.
   4. However, the bottom line is that one final filling in of the template will
      be sufficient.

Notes on the 1.1 Exemplar and Template
 The exemplar has examples for only two of the technique areas. Ideally
the others should be represented when the form is presented to the
      students.
 One suggested way of introducing the exemplar to the students is to
give the students (in pairs or threes) the empty template and the
contents of the boxes in the exemplar cut up into separate cards. The
task is for them to place the cards in the correct places in the template.
This forces the students to read and grapple with the meaning of the
answers as well as where they fit in the discussion of techniques.

Something I could have improved was …

Sample Answer
An important aspect of my character was that I was obviously pregnant and I was feeling vulnerable and exposed
in public. I used the body techniques of body-awareness and eye-contact to convey this aspect. I did this by repeatedly
touching my pregnant stomach throughout the scene and avoiding looking at other people at the bus stop.
My main purpose was to convey to the audience how isolated and self-conscious I felt. One aspect that worked well
was that the techniques helped me feel vulnerable and exposed in my role. Something I could have improved was
the way I moved and sat down as a pregnant woman. I needed to move more slowly and awkwardly.
