Shel’s Works
• Shel began writing and drawing when he was in
the army in the 1950s.
• He has written many children’s books, but he
originally started out as an adult author.
• Shel also wrote music for famous singers such
as Johnny Cash. He worked with other famous
singers, too.

• Shel wrote and helped
write many songs. He
wrote Hairy Jazz, Inside
Folk Songs, I’m So Good I

Sue, Ned Kelly: Original
Motion Picture Soundtrack,
Inside Shel Silverstein,
Freakin’ at the Freakers
Ball, and many more.
Shel’s Play Writing
• Shel began writing plays
1981. His first play was
The Lady or the Tiger
Show. It was produced at
the Ensemble Studio
Theaters annual festival
for one act plays.
Shel’s First Children’s Books
Shel was never planning on
being a children’s author.
His friend, Tomi Ungerger,
took him to Ursula
Nedstrom’s office to show
him he could be. Ursula
agreed with Tomi so Shel
started writing for kids. He
became a big success with
children and parents.
Shel’s Late Life
During his late life, Shel
wrote Falling Up. Two
years later, Shel was
hospitalized because of a
heart attack. He survived
one more year. Sadly, he
died May 9, 1999. His
only survivors are his son,
Matthew, and his sister,
Peggy Myers. Him and his
works will always be
remembered.
