Southtown Welcomes
New Executive Director
KWA Newsletter Volume 2, #9.............October 2006
A Big Pig's Tale
Several years ago, I learned that the Big Pig, having fallen on hard times, had
to relocate. He had spent his most recent years in the parking lot of a bar on S.
Roosevelt--and he looked like it! The land owner wanted him off. He was owned
by Bill Thomas who had saved him from a dire fate years earlier; now it was time
to save him again.
Juan J. Gutierrez There was oral history, from Mr. Smith, of Smith Chevrolet, that led us all to
believe the Big Pig had once resided at the early Pig Stand on Broadway, now

Most recently Juan served as the
Main Street Program Manager for the
Hispanic Association of Contractors
and Enterprises (HACE), a commu-
nity development corporation located
primarily in the Latino community of
Philadelphia. Juan served as their
Main Street Program Manager for
6 ½ years and was responsible for
their main street revitalization plan,
which integrated the use of the arts
and culture as one of the catalysts
for the revitalization of El Centro
de Oro Business and Cultural Arts
District, the premiere Latino busi-
ness district in Philadelphia and the
Delaware Valley. Mr. Gutierrez will
be working with the Southtown busi-
ness community and surrounding
neighborhoods to address pressing
issues for these communities. Juan
brings a vast knowledge of asset
and capacity building experience to
Southtown as well as his experience
in Heritage Tourism from a perspec-
tive that protects the integrity of the
community. We welcome the com-
munity to stop by the Southtown
Main Street Alliance offices located
at 716 S. Alamo Street or call 210-

We care about our old houses and the
even older City monuments which provide
the context for our neighborhood.
But what will happen when a new
generation is in charge? Will today’s
school children be tomorrow’s preser-
vationists? Will they see beauty in old
buildings and care about how people of
an earlier time lived and died?
Or will they see their City’s historic
places as nothing more than outmoded
buildings to be bulldozed for more hotels,
office buildings and parking lots?
You have a chance to help shape
the vision of the next generation. You
can volunteer one morning to help the
