Influences on Americas Government … digital projects
In this lesson students will use internet resources to create a timeline
presentation that demonstrates their understanding of English and colonial
government ideas that helped to influence fundamental American Political ideas.
SOLs: CE- 1a,b,d- CE-2a,b Technology Required: one computer per
NETS*S: Grades 6-8 (#'s 3,4,5,10) student with internet access, LCD
(6 if you have students produce digital projector, SmartBoard
recording, podcast, powerpoint etc… to
report the information to be assessed)

Learning Objective(s): Students will locate information about the Magna Carta, the
Creation of Parliament, the Charters of the Virginia Company
of london (including info about the government of the
Jamestown and Plymoth colonies), and the English Bill of
Rights: They will be able to explain the influence each of
these events had on the creation of the Declaration of
Indpendence and the government of the United States. They
will present their information in a digital format(powerpoint,
video, etc)
Materials Required: 1. One computer per student with internet access.
2. internet links to the specific sites that to find inforamtion
about each of the 5 key categories. (or depending on the
ability level of the group- web browser with search engine)
Technology Required: One computer per student with internet access.

Procedures/ Activities: 1. As a class do powerpoint presentation of the notes and
discuss main ideas dealing with the key information on
English and Colonial Government. Magna Carta, creation of
Parliament, Charters of the Va. Company of London, and
English Bill of Rights.
2. Have students log in to my quia.com website . they will
need to either print the key information handout or open it in
a separate window (depending on individual technology
resources that they have available to them & individual
ability levels). They will need to answer questions on the
handout(they may answer digitally or on paper)
3. have students use the useful links section to find
information about English and Colonial Government. record
the key information on the key information handout.
4. Use the information about the key concepts to create a
digital timeline (students may use the format of their choice;
powerpoint, inspiration, create video presentation, or
website)
Depending on the technology literacy of the students- I
provide a powerpoint template that they may use to just
basically fill in the blanks to answer key information- they
may then go back and find pictures audio files etc. to include
in their version to submit for a grade.
5. Students may either email digital timelines or post on the
schools shared drive for grading.
6. Review the informatioin with students before ending the
lesson with an online (quia.com site) quiz.
Method of Assessment: Students will be assessed on the accuracy of the key
information presented in their digital timeline. also will take
an online quiz to assess student understanding of the
material.
Conclusions/Observations: NEEDED WEBSITES ARE LOCATED ON MY
PORTAPORTAL.COM WEBSITE & Quia.com WEBSITE
In this lesson students utilize primary and secondary sources
to identify key concepts in the civics curriculum related to the
foundations of American Government. This assignment was
successful in engaging students higher order thinkingand
enriching their use of technology.
In the event that there are problems with the wireless lab an
alternate assignment can easily be adapted to use with a
paper version of the key information (and copies of the
discussion powerpoint) and primary resource documents can
be found in the library or textbooks.
