Role of an Associate Supervisor?

 Compulsory at QUT
 i.e. necessary to complete the
        paperwork
 Identified by the principle supervisor
        rather than the student
 Someone with expertise in the area
    of research
 Someone with complementary skills
My Experience with Paperwork
 Almost non-existent
     Stage 1 (enrolment)??
          Scholarships (domestic, international)

          Fee waivers

          IELT

          Research activity
               PPRAS

         My Concept of Paperwork
 Enrolment
 Stage 2
     Project development
          What the students wants/expects
          What their employer/institution wants
 What is required for a PhD
 Preparation of Stage 2 document
          When is it due?
 Confirmation (what’s required, when is it due?)
 Change of topic/supervisors (what is required?)
 Thesis and Final Seminar (the process)
     extensions
 Internal Review (selecting reviewers)
 External Review (selecting reviewers)
 Publications (authors)
         The Paperwork
 Allocation of percent supervision by the
    Research Students Centre
     Principle – 80%
     Associate – 20%
 Affects loads and completions
 Negotiated with principle supervisor by Stage 2
The Paperwork

 Is there an advantage of signing on
    as associate supervisor?
 Are we just signing on the dotted line??
 Should associate supervisors be
    more involved in paperwork?
 Thrown in the deep end
