Take a seat! The City of Yarra’s innovative
                                           option for recycled toner cartridges

             TONER CARTRIDGES TO
             TUB CHAIRS
In 1998 the City of Yarra, in conjunction with National Toner
and Ink, turned used printer and photocopier toner cartridges
into a recycled office tub chair.

The aim of the project was to demonstrate to Council staff
and the community that closing the recycling loop doesn’t
always mean that you end up buying the same type of
             product again.
                                                                                               Yarra Ciity Counciill
                                                                                               Yarra C ty Counc
WHY CITY OF YARRA INITIATED THE PROJECT
The City of Yarra conducted a waste audit at the start of 1998 that lead to the
identification of a range of activities to reduce the amount of waste produced
in the office. The tub chair project was initiated to:

✦ assist staff to look beyond ‘recycled paper’ and see that recycled
                    products can take many forms;

✦ expand staff understanding of the options for closing the loop; and

✦ support a local business endeavouring to seek out alternative uses for
cartridges that could not otherwise be recycled.

                                                                                                  Yarra C ty Counc
HOW CITY OF YARRA APPROACHED THE PROJECT
The City of Yarra has been returning its laser and inkjet cartridges to Toner
and Ink for several years for remanufacture. This allowed the valuable
components of the cartridges to be reused and resold at a cheaper price than
             new cartridges.

Council was keen to see if there was any way of recycling other cartridges
such as photocopier toner cartridges which are much larger, or the plastic in
printer cartridges that could not be included in the remanufacturing process.

Steve Morriss, of National Toner and Ink, came across a moulding process
that could use the high strength structural resins found in toner and inkjet
cartridges to make furniture components such as chairs and tables.

In order to demonstrate the ability to recycle cartridges into a stylish recycled
tub chair, staff at the City of Yarra saved printer and photocopier cartridges for
several months. National Toner and Ink collected the cartridges, had them
disassembled, pelletised and moulded into the tub chair shell. The shell was
then upholstered with 100% Australian Pure New wool. An additional tub
chair shell was made for use in an educational display.

Articles about the tub chair appeared in local papers and the community

newsletter to promote buying recycled products to other organisations in
Yarra. The tub chair and shell display was used at Yarra’s town halls and
community events as a promotion tool for the general community, along with
other recycled products that are available commercially.

             RESOURCEFUL PURCHASING IN ACTION
The City of Yarra is always seeking new products made from recycled
materials as part of its in-house waste minimisation program and to support
             kerbside recycling.

Staff at Yarra have been very receptive and supportive of this initiative. The
tub chair was a tangible outcome of their office recycling efforts. Fifteen toner
cartridges were used to manufacture the tub chair. This amounted to 80% of
             the total chair shell.
                                                                                            Yarra Ciity Counciill
                                                                                            Yarra C ty Counc
             LESSONS LEARNED
No barriers were encountered during the purchase of this chair and Yarra
would purchase more recycled chairs if they were available in an ergonomic,
desk chair range. This recommendation has been made to National Toner
             and Ink.

             COSTS, SAVINGS AND SUCCESSES
The recycled tub chair cost $457.00 and compared favourably with the cost of
other tub chairs purchased by the organisation.

The chair is now used in the office and has proven to be very durable and
             comfortable.

The tub chair has helped to change staff perception about the quality and
range of recycled products available and has become a popular discussion
             topic.

Now that staff confidence has been gained in this product more will be
produced and purchased in the future as required.
