```									Fitting a Trend Router Table Insert Plate
Fitting a router table insert plate requires an accurately sized square rebate in the table
top. Templates by numbers can help turn a job that takes two hours into one that takes 45
minutes, with the added bonus of being less prone to mistakes.
For this how to guide we’ll show how we fitted a Trend Router Table Insert Plate
using a 12mm router cutter and 24mm                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              A wide variety of
Templates by numbers we’ll specify 229mm for the
length and 153mm (306mm divided by 2) for the
width. In the next step specify the router bit and guide
bush diameter. Templates by numbers will do all the
router offset calculations.
Taking the template to the workshop
To make best use of your template you’ll need four scrap straight edges to align around
the ‘Mortice cut-out’ outline. Then with the router bit and guide bush you specified for
the template you can quickly route the cutout.
Check the fit by placing the router insert
plate on top of the combined template
plan. The edges of the insert plate
should lie just inside or on the centre
of the template lines. If they don’t, this
is the time to check whether you have
specified the mortice parameters
correctly!
To transfer the cutout position to the                                         Here we use a nail to
tabletop you can either glue the template                                      transfer the position
to the tabletop or use a nail to mark the                                      of the ‘Mortice jig
four corners of the Mortice jig cut-out                                        cut-out’ line to the
line.                                                                          tabletop
Next we need to fix scrap straight-edges                                       You want the straight
aligned with the Mortice jig cut-out line.                                     edge to be aligned
Nail or screw the straight-edges in place                                      with the middle of the
ensuring there is a smooth surface for                                         moritce jig cut-out line
the router to ride on.                                                         or just outside it
The diagram shows how the
routing will produce a rebate in
the right position for the router
insert plate to fit.
Set the router depth of cut to
be the same as the thickness of
the router plate. We are aiming
to route a rebate in the cut-out
that the insert plate can sit on
without the need for levelling
screws.
After routing the rebate remove the
centre material using a jigsaw.
Keeping the router jig straight edges
in place, test fit the router insert plate.
You may well find that slight easing is
required due to the router insert plate
not being perfectly square across it’s
dimensions. Ease the router plale with
sandpaper along sticking points. Route
again as necessary to creep up on the
perfect depth of cut to make the router
plate flush with the table top or it may
be left slightly proud.
A nice feature of the Trend router insert
plate is that it has rounded corners
which match the rounded corners left by
the mortice jig.
