                         SARAH B. COOPER (PRE-K & SA)
At Sarah B. Cooper, we are the very beginning stages of defining our mission and goals in connection with the district
three goals stated on the Balance Score Card. As a group, we have chosen a philosophy and a curriculum that is very
much in line with the district's goals. We started the year with a staff meeting on September 9th, setting the "tone" for this
year, discussing goals, mission, and commitments. We then created "Professional Learning Communities" meetings.
These meeting started at the end of September 2008. So far we have had two meetings: September 30th and November
25th.
Parents have been engaged in this process through Fall/Winter individual classroom-parent meetings in
November/December 2008 (November 4th, 14th, 24th and December 2nd).
Students have been engaged through a hands-on activity on making "All About Me" books with their families and
teachers.
The Professional Learning Community Meetings are opportunities for professional development for all staff. Preschool
and School-Age classroom teachers and paras get together to discuss topics relevant and pertinent to children's learning
and development across grade levels, based on our philosophical approach. We read articles, books, and review
relevant literature ahead of time to inspire and inform our thinking.
                                         Balanced Scorecard

Goal 1: Access and Equity
What does this goal mean at your school? What is the school you aspire to be with respect to access, equity,
and social justice?

Equity and social justice means that all students, families, and staff should feel a sense of belonging and feel valued at
our site. Regardless of their background, behavior, and or family upbringing, all children should be respected and valued
and their potentials recognized. Equity and social justice also means to have a shared vision for our site that is cohesive
and connected to the Reggio Emilia principles, chosen by the staff as a philosophy that will inspire our work. Valuing the
rich Chinese-American culture of our families is also providing access and equity to our community.
Both in our Pre-K and After-School program, staff has been working with the concepts of the Reggio Emilia approach,
especially around the aspect of valuing our identity and our culture. Through our Team Building workshop series, we will
hopefully strengthen our own identity as a site.
Enter a description of current conditions including promising practices or assets your site has in place for this
goal.
Last school-year, Sarah B. Cooper staff seemed to be confused in terms of the philosophical approach and shared vision
for our site. Different classrooms used different approaches to Early Childhood Education without cohesiveness
throughout the school. This created inequalities among students' access to a cohesive program and it gave parents and
staff confusing "messages" about our school. Some staff members were familiar and had some knowledge of the Reggio
Emilia approach.
Objective: 1.1 Diminish the historic power of demographics

Diminish the predictive power of all demographic data on high and equitable student achievement by increasing the
achievement of all groups of students and dramatically accelerating the achievement of targeted groups of students
(African-American, English Language Learners, Latino, Pacific Islanders, Samoan, Special Education

Goal 2: Student Achievement
What does this goal mean at your school? What is the school you aspire to be with respect to high achieving
and joyful learning?

In a Reggio Emilia Inspired school, the word and the concept of a joyful learner is very strong and very "visible". The
Reggio Emilia approach believes that ALL children are capable, strong, and full of potential. It is up to us, at the school
level to recognize and to offer opportunities for ALL students to show their full potential and therefore their joy. Children
who are joyful learners are consequently high achievers.
Enter a description of current conditions including promising practices or assets your site has in place for this
goal.
Currently the staff at Sarah B. Cooper is working hard in changing the paradigm of the image of the child as "needy" to
an image of the child as "strong, able, and full of potential". We are also working on valuing the children’s birth language,
Chinese, and other aspects of their culture as an asset to each other, to the school, and to our community.
Objective: 2.1 Ensure authentic learning for every student

Students will meet or exceed SFUSD grade level standards in all core curriculum areas (language arts/literacy,
mathematics, science, history/social science, world languages, visual/performing arts)
Measurement - how will you measure success in achieving this goal and objective(s)?

Workshops, visits to other sites, and other professional development opportunities will be offered in order for staff to
make connections between theory and practice, based on the educational principles of the Reggio Emilia approach.
Visit to Commodore Stockton CDC, in Chinatown, another Reggio Emilia Inspired School, was a very valuable
experience for our preschool staff. They understood better the concept of valuing and making visible our own
identity. Plans for summer and fall 2009 include looking at our own classrooms' identity through the environment.

Goal 3: Accountability
What does this goal mean at your school? What is the school you aspire to be with respect to a culture of
service, and keeping your promises to students and their families.

To keep our promises to our students and families means to be accountable. Documentation of our daily work with the
students can provide a rich resource to our parents, to our children, and to the staff. It is a meaningful way to evaluate
our work.
Enter a description of current conditions including promising practices or assets your site has in place for this
goal.
Even though the teaching staff values the process of observation and documentation, it is a struggle to make it happen.
Teaching staff in the child development programs do not have any paid time to work on planning, documentation,
meetings, assessments, parent-teacher conferences, parent meetings, and so on. The site manager currently arranges
professional development opportunities for staff to meet, plan, evaluate, and document through our Preschool For All
(PFA) funding. However there is never enough time (staff varied schedules) or enough funding in the budget to make this
a reality. Our school-age staff is not PFA eligible therefore we do not have a budget to pay them for such activities. Staff
ends up doing this work on their own time. At Sarah B. Cooper, documentation does not reflect the current work of the
students in the classroom.
