Biography: Rakesh Patel, MD
Dr. Patel is a teaching faculty and staff radiation oncologist at the University of
Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. He is the Director of the Breast and
Prostate Brachytherapy Programs and has a special interest in Accelerated
Partial Breast Irradiation.
After completing his MD at Indiana University School in 1999, he was a resident
in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
until 2004. He then joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor and leads the
Multi-disciplinary Breast Cancer and Brachytherapy programs.
Dr. Patel has a special interest in education, as he is the UW Medical School
Course Director for Neoplastic Diseases. He has been on the Scientific Program
Committees for the Radiologic Society of North America (RSNA), multiple
American Brachytherapy (ABS) Annual Meetings including the Brachytherapy
World Congress 2008, and serves as Co-chair of the ABS School of Breast
Brachytherapy. Dr. Patel currently serves as a Director-at-large of the
American Brachytherapy Society.
He has given over 40 scientific meeting, visiting professor, and international
lectureships on advanced brachytherapy techniques especially involving image-
guided breast brachytherapy with 3-dimensional treatment planning. He is an
author of over 30 peer-reviewed manuscripts and review articles. Dr. Patel is
the principal investigator of a large, phase 2 trial of multi-catheter breast
brachytherapy at UW Hospital and is the national Co-PI of a Multi-institutional
trial of Electronic Brachytherapy for Early Stage breast Cancers sponsored by
the American Brachytherapy Society and the American Society of Breast
Surgeons. Additionally, he is the clinical PI of two Komen Foundation grants
evaluating various physics aspects of partial breast irradiation with novel
techniques.
Dr. Patel is a sports-enthusiast, enjoys movies, and loves to travel. He lives in
Madison, Wisconsin with his wife and two young daughters.
