Albert Alexander

Albert Alexander Sheldon Albert A. Sheldon was born on the farm at Badger, IA. His four older siblings were born in Wisconsin making him the first to be born at Badger. After attending local schools, he worked with his dad for several years before getting married in 1898. On Mar 6, 1903 he purchased a farm located % mile east and one mile south of Rake, Iowa, from O. O. Quam and Ed 0 Halverson. Around 1910 he built the two story house and moved a AA Sheldon Farm - 1978 section of the old house and attached it on the west side for the kitchen. The new home had a large front foyer with a two section open stairs. In addition, a stair went from the kitchen to the second story and was referred to as "the back stairs". A steam furnace that burned coal and wood was installed. Electricity and running water were not available. The following farm buildings were constructed over the next few years: Large barn, large double com crib, hog house, and chicken house. A deep water well was drilled, about 300 feet deep, down near the barn where the livestock could have easy access to water. All water for household use had to be carried from the well to the house in pails, about 400 feet. Otto added the large machine shed, left foreground, in the late 1950s. The farm was leased by Otto Sheldon in 1925 when he married and remained on the farm until 1962, except for three years, 1943-1946, when it was rented to Anfin Halverson. In the early 1950s Otto purchased the farm. He continued to operate the farm until 1962 when he leased it to his second son, Albert Harold Sheldon, and retired in Buffalo Center, Iowa. The farm went into estate upon Cora's death in 1975. Albert continuedto farm it until 1978 when it was sold. In 1903 he and his family moved to a 160 acre fann two miles South of Rake, IA that he had purchased. He prospered as a fanner and purchased two additional fanns in Minnesota. In 1925 he retired from the fann and moved to Rake where he became active in the operation of the grain elevator and Lincoln Creamery. The arrival of the great depression created a severe financial problem in his father's family and Albert helped by selling his two Minnesota fanns and borrowed on the Rake fann. The family managed to hold the Rake fann through the depression. Following her husbands death, Josephine lived in Garden Grove, IA and Des Moines. Both buried in West Zion Cemetery, Rake, IA. At the age of three the family moved to Rake, IA where he spent most of his life. After attending Waldorf Business School for a short period, he decided to stay with fanning. On March 7, 1925 he married a lovely neighbor girl, Cora Skaare. He leased the home fann from his father and lived there for most of the next 38 years. In the early fifties he went deeply in debt and purchased the Rake fann. In 1963 he retired to Buffalo Center and leased the fann to his second son, Albert. The Air Force called him to active duty in February 1951and after seven years in radar, he was sent to Oklahoma State University for a BS in Electrical Engineering. He worked in research and development of weapon systems until retirement in 1969. During this period he attended the Air force Institute of Technology earning a MS in Systems Management. His medals include two Commendation Medals, one for his work on the Titan Missile System and the second on long range radars. The next 13 years were spent in Industry working on development programs, such as B-1Avionics and Navy undersea sonobouy systems. Evelyn earned an Associates Degree from Middlesex Community College and worked several years in accounting at Epsilon Corp.
