notes: A fun night and oddly the best stuff was the stuff we have never played before. Five debuts that were all pretty good
especially DREAMS and STEADY ROLLIN MAN. The first set was a bit weird for me getting used to a new monitor set-up.
Set two we just kept playin‟ without a break. El Tempo took a break midway so I started Butch‟s FOG song which the crowd got
into, singing right along. Packed house by this time. The TAXMAN (w/ original Chop Tom Melvin guesting on electric guitar)
and GET READY jams were pretty adventurous and Kurt‟s inspiration to play flute on GET OUT was a great call. The other
original Chop Mr. Butch Zito himself showed up towards the end of DREAMS and plugged in staying up the rest of the set.
Macturk brought his trumpet in so we put him to work near the end of the set. All in all a fun night in spite of some intonation
problems from various sources throughout. Chris in fact played all night using Kurt‟s new fretless 5 string bass which he had
                                                         never played before.

Apex Watson did a killer opening set and brought in some nice people. We gave away LIFEBOAT cds and played one lon 2.5
hour set. Lots of fun if not the tightest set ever. The two long medleys were especially fun w/ a rare version of HAND JIVE
pulled from the extra large chapeau and a new spontaneous jam we‟ll call FUZZY SLIPPERS out of an inside out JEAN-PIERRE
(tease) soon followed by a nice percussion discussion between El Tempo and Kurt while we all laid out. The Monk/Marley
thang was mercilessly brief into the remainder of DON‟T LET GO. Steveie, fresh from an earlier couple of sets at the Bvlue Crab
with the Sin City Band was warmed up and burnin‟ all night. Christian debuted the SOPRANOS THEME out of NEW SPEEDWAY.
The Red Baron added some funky trumpet to it also. Not much original music this time but we‟ll make up for it here next month when
                                                           we play a full night.

A fun night at a new place. Thanks to the folks who came here from DE and places outbound. Hope you had as much fun as
we did. Nice to have Dieter Mossberg back in the fold for the evening playing some bass and guitar and even singing the Stones
LET IT BLEED. We had another spe3cial guest who had never played with us before (no rehearsal, all ears!) J.B., a Double
Dose alumni who kicked butt on keyboards with us all night long. We‟ll try to get him back whenever we can. Faves from the set:
a nice SHE BELONGS TO ME that really grew up before our eyes. The OPHELIA, YOU WIN AGAIN, JOKER openers in set
two featured some great key work from J.B.; Brad put down his guitar for RED HOUSE and just blew the harp. This tune
featured killer solos from Steve, JB, Brad and Dieter. Stevie wails on Muddy Waters‟ WALKIN‟ IN THE PARK followed by a
tasty MASTERPIECE w/ Dieter switching to bass and Christian to guitar for the rest of the set. A rare but sloppy COME
TOGETHER. After TUPELO HONEY we launched into NEW SPEEDWAY which really went huge and wild in the jam with
Dieter pumping out the bassline for Zeppelin‟s HOW MANY MORE TIMES. We all jumped in and played through it a couple of
times. Way fun. This segued into a jam that felt like The OTHER ONE before getting giant and then dropping back down into the
NEW SPEEDWAY ending. Set three started with a pum,ped if a bit jagged WEST L.A. which was extra long with double
solos all around while I changed a string midway through. The Beatles RAIN was next with backwards guitar from Brad,
glimmering waterfall guitar from Steve and thunderburst bass from Dieter. The jam was spacey into a bit of a MTN JAM and
then into a quick GDTRFB groove and riffs into which Stevie placed a nice quote of the head from Boots Randolph‟s YAKETY
SAX! LITTLE WING was nice and spaced with TANGLED ending things on a pumped up note. Sloppy fun with a new
audience and configuration.

notes: 8th Annual Zimmy-A-Thon was a blast though the turn-out was light due to the AllGood festival pulling lots of
fans out of Newark. It was a real fun night for us in that we played one entire Bob album in its entirety chosen by the fans via
our website and newsletters. BLOOD ON THE TRACKS was 1st choice with DESIRE and BLONDE ON BLONDE second.
10 out of the 24 Dylan tunes we played we had never played before so there was a lot of chart reading going on. Our eyes got a
workout. We opening with the rarely played classic LIKE A ROLLING STONE with Steve, Brad and Chris all alternating
vocals. Next was our first stab at the obscure and jazzy, IF DOGS RUN FREE from the New Morning album. We got some
great comments on this one and requests to keep it in the rotation. Another 2 debuts followed with Oh Mercy‟s MAN IN THE
LONG BLACK COAT and THE WICKED MESSENGER form the John Wesley Harding album. El Tempo‟s been trying to get us to
learn the latter for a decade THINGS HAVE CHANGED is a fave of Chris & Brad‟s and the only Oscar winning tune we do. What
followed were 5 debuts in a row starting with the wonderful love song from Desirte, SARA. Sin City bassist Bobby
Bloomingdale joined us on the upright for the rest of the set starting with TELL ME THAT IT ISN‟T TRUE a tune the Sin City
boys havbe been known to cover. Stevie took the vocal reignes for WANTED MAN which was written by Dylan for Johnny
Cash. Christian then crooned a Deadish versio of QUEEN JANE and we ended the set with the deep groove of SLOW
TRAIN. Set two consisted primarily of the BLOOD ON THE TRACKS songs in order. Original Chopper Butch Zito played
mandolin for most of the set (and electric guitar on SIMPLE TWIST) and Bobby played upright on everything except
TANGLED and IDIOT WIND. A fun set if a bit searching on the endoings of all the new songs! BUCKETS OF RAIN was
probably my favorite and if you weren‟t there for the 16 verse LILY, ROSEMARY & THE JACK OF HEARTS, sorry but we will
NEVER attempt that one again. After about 10 verses the band had a hard time keeping a stright face, hoping and praying that the
next verse would be the last, Whew. That‟s a workout. TOM THUMB‟S was funb with Butch and Christina action out rock star
poses and Four Tops moves in timew to the music. Pretty scary.

                         PS#2 - FOUR DOGS TAVERN - MARSHALLTON, PA - 8PM-12AM
The final gig before Butch Zito‟s “hiatus” from gigging was a farewell show for RAILROAD PETE (BZ/TERI DOBRA/LEE
DRENDALL/TOM WADE) with various guest mini-sets and sit-ins from TWO VAGRANTS (BZ/BR), CHRISTIAN & ELLEN,
BZB (BZ/CS/FRANK MILEWSKI), BART FROELICH, LINDA BUNTING, LESLIE CAREY and all possible permutations
of all of the above. No documentation unfortunately, but a fun time was had by all. He‟s quitting the business in order to further
develop his curse on the NY Yankees.

notes: For all of you Steve Hobson fans all I can say is you missed a great one. I‟ve heard Mr. H play for 20+ years now and I
have never heard him play a more adventurous, on-the-money, stunningly inventive show. Full of great ideas, astounding
execution and incredible MIDI guitar voicings Brad practically had to slap myself to remember to play HIS instrument.
Unfortunately, it was our smallest crowd in years at the East End due to mid-summer beach weather, Phil Lesh playing in
Holmdel and whatever other unknown factors one can fathom. Dieter was back with us, this time on bass instead of guitar.
He‟d originally joined the band back in 1996 when the Bassmeister retired from the Porch and eventually moved over to guitar
when we realized the amazing facial contortions that he had made his reputation on were strictly a guitar-oriented
phenomenon. Unfortunately, so was his frightening fashion sense and color-wheel coiffure merry-go-round but he made up for
them with his Hendrix-meets-Billy Gibbons-on-Steve-Stevens-turf guitaristics. So with Christian off at the Lesh show and Kurt
who knows where we gave Dieter the call to resume his dormant bass duties. Our set list was made up of things he either had
played bass on with us originally or had played enough on guitar that his fingers would more than likely find their rightful spot
on the girthy strings of the bass.
The first set started nice with four tunes played well. Then the travesty of electrical spirits reared their ugly head and Brad‟s amp
shut down. Stevie played solo through his BROKEN STRING SONG and a little jam we‟ll call BROKEN AMP SONG while we
fumbled around to put Brad‟s guitar rig through the monitors direct for the rest of the set until we‟d have time to figure out the
problem. The rest of the set was a bit less essential due to the distraction of trying to get used to a whole new stage sound just as it was
coming together. Oh well. Quartet is always fun because there‟s so much room to leave space in the songs for invention. TAXMAN
was fun though we tried to rekindle the arrangement from the Dieter years which is closer to the Beatles version. The original Chops
rendition was fast bluegrass and the recent version is real fast funk psychedelia. This one fell (and I mean fell) somewhere
between. Lyrics a bit convoluted and we never really all hit the bridge together, but the jam is nice. Oh well. TUPELO HONEY
was it‟s usual sweet and easy self SH even experimented with a bit of “Scruggs tuning” in a solo and SLOW TRAIN was fun once
Dieter got the changes.; Stevie played some wild distorted fills that were crusher!
Set two was way fun. Opened with a bluegrass medley of Johnny Cash‟s FOLSOM PRISON BLUES with Zeppelin‟s BLACK
DOG tucked into the middle. The rarely played AIN‟T NO SUNSHINE was a trip and went into the Dead‟s WEST L.A. which
featured a little Stevie section teasing. RAIN was watery and lysergic and long. Brad‟s acoustic swam through his rack of fx
with a bit of backwards stuff throughout the breaks. Steve‟s MIDI rig ran the gamut from vibes to 70s synthy stuff to obtuse
space warp. Brad had fun singing MASTERPIECE again after all these years (Christian sings it these days when we play it)
We pulled out WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS for more pyrotechnics from SH. Next was a way long medley
featuring some killer interaction between Steve and our pal the Red Baron on trumpet. LOW SPARK was the general tune but
during the long intro lots of spontaneous brainstorming
of teases, quotes, riffs in various groupings throughout. The Baron pulled out the LIZ REED riff and SH was right there with
him while Brad fooled w/ Miles Davis‟ JEAN-PIERRE head. Fun. ¾ of the way through Steve somehow led us into Albert King‟s
CROSSCUT SAW before we lit back into the last verse of SPARK. TLEO featured the edgiest, ballsiest sound to ever some from Mr.
Hobson‟s rig. Wow! Got major chuckles of approval onstage. At 1:05 we started the DON‟T LET GO medley at Dieter‟s request.
The TANGLED riffage in the middle was a suggestion of Stevie‟s but we didn‟t have time to get into it so we plowed back into DLG.
Of course the place got much more crowded in the last 20 minutes of the night including the Punk guys that usually hang in the
middle room of the club. The crowd (and Mark on trumpet out with „em) gave us a rousing curtain call so Dieter strapped on
Steve‟s guitar and Steve moved to bass for a huge version of Hendrix‟s FOXY LADY (in spite of the fact that Brad faked the riff he
couldn‟t remember all the way through). One of the punk boys climbed up onstage to help sing (at least he asked first). A very fun
                                                                    night.

Notes: What a night. Nerve wracking hoping we could pull this off. A amazing stroke of luck having magnificent alto
saxophonist Greg Osby want to sit in with us. A client of Brad‟s he mentioned sitting in sometime before he‟d ever heard us and
hopefully we didn‟t slop it up too much. While we waited for Greg to arrive our first set was a nice short warm up for us with a
bunch of perfunctory originals and simple tunes leaving the jammers for later. Lots of sound problems at the outset. Horrid
monitor sound (seems Brad‟s monitor was blown and dysfunctional (we still used it for what it was worth) and some mystery rice
crispies in the mains made for a rough time concentrating. Brad‟s new acoustic amp set-up took a bit of getting used to for him
providing another pretty distraction. WHY WASTE TIME was pretty well played. BE FRIENDLY found Brad flubbing the
changes a bit but the HENRY that followed was nice with some cool harmonies and an incredible bit or “rollin‟” dance from
Mickey McMahon back from the dessert with Smurph for their first Chops in a couple of years. He was a joy to watch and helpful
with guitar stringin‟. Tom said to me, “It‟s great. It‟s like he never missed a beat…right back into the swing of things.” Next came
our first ever stab at Neil Young‟s wonderful song L.A. What a killer tune. Why Neil has not released the “Time Fades Away”
album that this came from is a mystery. We actually played it just about exactly right. Stops, starts, dynamics and everything. Strange
but true. SILLY OLD FOOL a seldom played original off of the Lifeboat cd was pretty cool. The Beatles‟ GLASS ONION made it‟s
second appearance done well but for Stevie missing the ending by three notes. Gotcha. Such a short tune (less than 2 minutes) that you
just want it to go on longer. Mybe we‟ll have to find a way to expand it somehow. Chris announces in reaction, “You dribbled on
yourself...Smithers use the amnesia ray…We‟re the Porch Chops and we‟re here to sex you up.” To which Brad responds, “..but then,
LOOK at us.” We follow with an inspired version of the title tune from LIFEBOAT, again something we haven‟t played much
recently. Stevie launches his GET OUT which verve. Always fun to play. Next was a tune that was broken out initially for our
Zimmy-A-Thon in May. We‟re stiol trying to find a way to add something distinctive to this short Dylan tune. El tempo has been
requesting this song for years. We like to think that it ios because there is something he likes about it but probably he just wants
to play a SHORT Dylan tune for a change! SHED THIS SKIN from the forthcoming “Salmon Chanted Evening” cd followed.
We jumped into Phish waters with WOLFMAN‟S BROTHER that somehow found it‟s way into GOLDEN ROAD to close the set.
Unfortunately, Brad was having guitar problems so there were some tuning issues on these last two numbers. Just enough to get
the set closed out to circle the wagons. The real fun started w/ Set Two when brave Mr. Greg Osby stepped onto the Porch for
the first time. Heralded in the NY Times as “one of the most important jazz musicians of the 20th Century” the shocking reality
that this master improviser would jump up with our amateur selves was pretty nerve-wracking. We played pretty well though.
Gave him som basic Chops freneticism and let him loose. He tore it up! Great ears. Fearless. The crowd, many of whom saw
Greg sit in with Phil Lesh & Friends at Camden‟s Tweeter Center a couple of weeks ago were loving it and made him feel at home.
He claims to have had a great time, loved the scene “It‟s like a mini Phil scene”. We sure hope to have him back if he‟s willing. I
don‟t know what to say about the set. Pretty much wildly rippin‟ throughout. Some fun cameos from Joe A and the Red Baron.
Highlights for me were the version of our tune SNAKE CHARMER that got real twisty right out of the basket, most of DREAMS was
really inspired and the winding DARK STAR medley went all over the place. We played a few tunes that Greg had played with
Phil in his guest spots over the last couple of years so he would feel too alienated from his usual world of innovative, churning
jazz invention. Things like STAR, HCSS, SPEEDWAY, and WEST L.A. (the latter was horribly out of tune due to a tuning
peg fiasco from Brad‟s guitar – doh!) Check out his great soling on SPEEDWAY. Listen for Chris‟ HOW MANY MORE TIMES
John Paul Jones riff in SPEEDWAY. We even threw some hillbilly breakdown at Greg and he jumped right on it. Next time
                                                         he‟s wearing overalls.

notes: Despite a low turnout (okay so all you folks better have been at the Stones show!), this show was a blast which a bunch
of tunes this edition has never tackled or rarely does. The first set featured a debut of Bowie‟s ZIGGY STARDUST (How fun was
that? Once Brad doesn‟t have to make up the words as he goers this will be way cool). There were a couple of tunes that we have
recently added to the book and pulled out again, WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS (which ended the set), YOU WIN
AGAIN and Dylan‟s WANTED MAN. We opened with the Stones‟ LAST TIME which we used to play a lot when Steve first
joined the band way back when but hadn‟t played in a couple of years. We jammed it out a bit a la the Yardbirds. We also tried a
couple of Stones tunes (as Brad mentioned from the stage, “We‟re always hard up for a theme for the evening so we‟d like to thank
the Rolling Stones for coming to town”) that the earlier versions of the Chops used to break out on occasion. FACTORY GIRL and
NO EXPECTATIONS, the latter of which Butch used to sing as a bluegrass tune in the original Chops. Tonight Stevie sang it and we
stuck closer to the recorded bluesy mood. We also brought back TURNING OF THE TIDE, a jaunty little Richard Thompson
number that we haven‟t done since Keith Moss used to play bass with us (pre-Christian and Steve). TEXAS TOWN, a great tune by
our good friend Jimmie B. of Stackabones was pulled out since Pat from BZB was in the crowd. I think we finally have a
handle of Willie Nelson‟s FUNNY HOW TIME SLIPS AWAY, one of THE greatest songs ever and our best tune of the set!
Set Two began with another tune we don‟t play too often but should, Elvis Costello‟s EVERYDAY I WRITE THE BOOK. Brad‟s
old tune SNAKE CHARMER from the Chops 1st cd Prototype, has transmorgified into a jammy number over the last few months.
Running 7 minutes as opposed to the orig. 3 or so, it allows for some midi strecthing by Mr. Hobson. A favorite Dylan tune of
the band IDIOT WIND was next and was reaaly good until a bit of a breakdown during the instrumental part. Oh well.
RAINBOW MAN > FOUR SQUARE is an original medley that will be on our next cd (coming, I promise) which was
followed by Stevie‟s new favorite Dylan tune LIVING THE BLUES, only performed once by Bob back in 68 on the Johnny Cash
show and released on Self-Portrait. Dylan pulled this one out of mothballs himself on occasion a year or so ago. John Lennon‟s
blues IT‟S SO HARD had been attempted once or twice a year or so ago and then forgotten but Brad won‟t let this rockin‟ tune die.
The Red Baron joined us onstage for this and the big medley that followed. A short LOW SPARK intro found the trumpet playing
the LIZ REED riff over Brad‟s quotes from Thelonious Monk‟s BEMSHA SWING and teasing Miles‟ JEAN-PIERRE into a multi-
facted little excursion around the SPARK changes before Brad sang the 1 st verse. We oops our way through the changes during the
bridge (which we‟d finally rearranged, but still haven‟t mastered after years of doing it our own way). By the time we got around to
the 2nd verse the bridge was done just fine, thank you. Slowly but surely folks! This led into an extended take on Miles Davis‟
JEAN-PIERRE with Brad getting his wah dirty and some nice soloing from The Baron and Steve. It picked up speed and launched
into a drum solo from El Tempo before Steve started the LIZ REED figure again finally settling into the last verse of LOW SPARK
before a funky final jam. This wound down into a big E chord that set up our debut of Traffic‟s LIGHT UP OR LEAVE ME
ALONE which was a bit tentative and not quite there but which evolved into a huge almost VIOLA jam that Stevie turned into
Cream‟s I‟M SO GLAD. This was a wild card call. We‟ve teased it once at Fat Rick‟s years ago and have threatened to learn it but
have never gotten around to it. This was fat and outside with Brad playing some psychedelic distorted wah under Stevie‟s Clapton-
esque solo. We jammed it a bit and wound down into the rockabilly rave-up Buddy Holly‟s ROCK ME MY BABY. Rockin‟. Stevie‟s
rockin‟ tune GET OUT kept things movin‟. Christian followed with Springsteen‟s song ATLANTIC CITY that we do sort of half like
The Band and half like the Boss. For this rarely played tune, Stevie switched to bass for this and Chris strapped on the Strat.
Clapton‟s STEADY ROLLIN‟ MAN was smokin‟ maybe the best of the night. We ended by taking a ballsy stab at ROCKY
MOUNTAIN WAY pushing our way towards 1:15am. Fun night. Great to have our old buddy Bud Ochs helping us out with
roadie duties back from his sojourn in the wasteland.

TANGLED UP IN WORDS: A SAMPLING…I've gotten into the habit of changing certain lines in TANGLED UP IN BLUE (our most
played song)--here is a sampling:”We drove that (jalopy) as far as we could”(#2); "Music in the cafes at night and revolution over in the Middle
East somewhere."(#1,2,3,6,9,11) “Up in New York somewhere” (#). Last couple of years it was "Tienamen Square." In gig # I slid into
“Revolution in the cafes at night, and something going on in the Middle East somewhere.” “..and revolution down in Dade County Florida,
somewhere” (#); I also replace the descriptive phrase "carpenter's wives" (#3,6) with something different each time (#1,5: “bricklayer‟s wives”,
#2: “Apex Watson‟s wives”, “saxophone player‟s wives”, #9). Rarer still I change the first half of that phrase: “Some are (dog beauticians) as on the
overdub of #; Occasionally “all the (Mukluks) we used to know” (#2,3,9) and usually sing "staring at the sight of her ooh la la" (#1,5,6), or “at her
„oh my gawd‟”(#2,3,9). “She was standing there right beside my chair, sayin‟ („Hey, big boy) don‟t I know your name‟”(#1,2,3,5,6,9,11); I also
usually sing either "written by some L.A. derelict by the name of (Charles) Bukowski" (#2,6,9) or "written by a Beat poet of the Ginsberg variety"(#)
instead of "an Italian poet from the___Century" Other changes will be noted here with the version/gig #:) TANGLED was NOT played at the
following gigs (#4,7,8,10,12,13);

13: Split songs are counted as one title here

improvised 6 different themes or played group composition (most in one gig: 3 in gig #2; not played: #3,6,7,10,13)
# of Hobson originals: 4 different songs we drew from 17 times (most in one gig was 3 in gig #4,7,9; least in one gig: 0 in #6) (most be Steve
but one of those being his Mom's tune BE FRIENDLY)
