News of the Weird: A 23-year-old woman was arrested after a scuffle with a 13-year-old
boy in a wheelchair at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas. Mikka Shardai
Cline was charged with injury to a child in connection with the struggle over a soccer ball on
Tuesday night. The boy’s uncle told police that he was trying to retrieve the ball, which he
had bought for the boy, from a bush on hospital grounds. The woman and her sister were
also trying to get the ball. Police said the woman tried to grab the ball and swung her fist
toward the boy, who had a pre-surgical medical halo screwed into his skull. It wasn’t clear
whether she was deliberately trying to hit the boy or trying to knock the ball from his lap.
Police said the woman’s first swing missed, but her second struck the boy’s halo, causing
him pain. The woman was being held in jail on $1,500 bail.
Authorities in Cincinnati have labeled Bennie Crabtree the most-arrested man in the
county. Records show he has been arrested 146 times since 1998, when Hamilton County’s
record-keeping system was updated. Veteran police officers said he was arrested many
more times in the decades before that. Crabtree’s record includes criminal trespassing,
disorderly conduct and theft. Police say he steals food and intrudes in places such as the
University of Cincinnati, hospitals and businesses. He’s never done anything serious enough
to be sent to prison. Because of jail overcrowding, he’s now often released hours after
arrest. Police say the 61-year-old man has lived mostly on the streets and has some mental
problems. A social worker says Crabtree is just lonely.
Every wedding day is special, but Adam and Julie Hatfield of La Crosse, Wisconsin will have
some extra special memories about the day they said "I do!" The bride and groom were in
La Crosse's Riverside Park posing for photos just before the ceremony, when they heard a
man yelling "Allie! Allie!" They turned to see a man looking over the wall at the Mississippi
River below. Then he jumped in. The man's daughter had apparently fallen into the river
and he was attempting to save her. That's when Adam sprung into action, jumped over the
wall and got down near the water where the man was treading water with the girl in his
arms. With the help of the photographer, he pulled both to safety. Adam shook hands with
the man but never did learn his name as he had to rush off to the wedding. Later, the best
man incorporated the rescue into his toast, coining the phrase "save a life, get a wife."

It’s time now for Officer Don’s Police Blotter, a service of “Holmes Security Systems…If
you’re paying more than $18.95 for monitoring you’re paying too much.”
In Fort Myers, Florida, 21-year-old Yunet Linares went into the McDonald's where her
mother happens to work and ordered some food. However, apparently they got her order
wrong and when Yunet went to complain to employee William Russell an argument ensued
and Yunet slapped Russell in the face! Russell then grabbed Yunet and pushed her against
the wall in self-defense. Her mother, Maria Figueredo, then got in on the action and
attacked Russell from behind, hitting him in the head. Police then got there and arrested
Ms. Linares. Amazingly her mother was not arrested because police say she didn't see the
initial slap and thought she was coming to the aid of her daughter. And by the way -- would
you like fries with that? (Naples News)

The popular cash-for-clunkers program will end Monday night. While the program has
tremendously boosted the auto industry's sagging sales, the slow gears of government in
getting those 45-hundred-dollar checks out has given many dealerships the squeeze. The
federal government estimates that some 700-thousand new cars have moved off the lots as
a result of the program, which started at the beginning of July.
Lydia was evicted on last night's Big Brother. But before we got the news:
--- There was some dirty talk. Natalie and Lydia compared notes on their hookups with the
now-evicted meatheaded Jessie, who has been dubbed "Mister Pectacular." Kevin reminded
the girls that Jessie's hooking up with them was just a strategy to gain their trust. We also
found out that Natalie has a boyfriend back home who watches the show. Wonder how he
liked her hookup with meathead.
--- There was some plotting. Natalie, Lydia and Kevin hatched a plan to turn Jeff and
household-head Jordan against Russell. The ruse, that Russell was overheard plotting to
evict Jeff next week, may actually work despite Kevin's bad acting.
--- But we learn that Kevin's acting didn't work at the eviction. Russell, Michele and Jeff cast
the deciding votes to evict Lydia. Kevin voted to kick out Natalie.
Michael Jackson will have wait a little longer to be laid to rest. Papa Joe Jackson says
Michael's burial is being postponed two days. Joe tells T-M-Z that the family needs to get
some things in order before Jacko can be buried. The pop icon is now expected to be buried
on August 31st. He was set to be laid to rest on August 29th, which would have been his
51st birthday. There's also been a change in plans for the Jackson movie This Is It. The
behind-the-scenes look at the performer's doomed 50-date concert tour will be released for
a limited, two-week engagement worldwide, according to TheWrap-dot-com. It's also been
bumped up two days and will come out on October 28 th.
A South African runner's gender is coming under question after she posted the fastest time
of the year in winning the women's 800 meters at the world track and field championships
in Berlin, Germany. Caster Semenya posted a time of one-minute, 55-seconds -- finishing
two seconds ahead of the defending world champion. But Semenya's physique at 18 has
raised eyebrows that she could genetically be a man. While she was defended by her coach
and her father, the International Association of Athletic Federations director of
communications, Nick Davies, called the incident "a medical issue. It's not an issue of
--- Meanwhile, Jamaica's Usain Bolt, who no one is accusing of being a woman, yesterday

Swine Flu Survival Kit: As the U.S. prepares for a possible second wave of the swine flu, as
well as for the annual seasonal flu, a new report from Consumer Reports helps households
prepare for, prevent, and treat flu symptoms safely and effectively, including
recommendations for what to pack in an emergency kit for a flu outbreak. The report is
available in the September 2009 issue of Consumer Reports and online at
www.ConsumerReportsHealth.org. In case the second wave of swine flu is severe enough to
warrant home confinement, consumers should pack an emergency kit in advance. Here’s
what you’ll need:
·A two-week supply of food and water.
·Fever reducers, such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen or naproxen.
·Cough and cold medications containing chlorpheniramine, diphenhydramine, oxymetazoline
Lozenges with dyclonine, glycerin or honey can help ease symptoms as well.
·Electrolyte drinks such as Gatorade or Powerade to keep you hydrated.
·Hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol to kill viruses when soap and water aren’t
·Surgical masks with an FDA rating of at least N-95 to help prevent spreading the flu. Masks
need to be replaced often and disposed of after use.
·For all emergencies, Consumer Reports recommends packing at least three days’ worth of
nonperishable food; at least one gallon of water per person, per day; a first-aid kit that
includes any prescription or over-the-counter medications your family might need; as well
as antihistamines for allergic reactions, pain relievers, stomach and anti-diarrhea remedies,
The government is currently preparing a vaccine against the swine flu that will likely be
recommended for school-age children and other high-risk individuals, such as pregnant
women, those with chronic illness, and those who live or work with infants, preschoolers or
older adults. In the meantime, Consumer Reports recommends that everyone – especially
high-risk people – get vaccinated against seasonal flu before December.
WKML Country Notes 08/21
Chesney, Kenny --- Susan Mazer claims Kenny Chesney snatched her camera’s memory
card as she was taking pictures during a concert in Foxborough, Massachusetts. “(Chesney)
was like a person in front of me and he reached down, grabs the camera, shuts it, goes
down the walkway and throws it on the stage,” Mazer told Boston’s WCVB-TV. She said the
camera was returned, but the memory card, containing photos from her family vacation,
was missing. Although video cameras are banned at Gillette Stadium, the concert’s venue,
Mazer insists that she was only taking still pictures of last Saturday’s show.
Currington, Billy --- Before Billy Currington's performance on the Late Show With David
Letterman, Dave compared Billy's hit, "People Are Crazy," to Michaelangelo's famous David
sculpture. "When I first heard it, it reminded me of the time when I first saw
Michaelangelo's David... This song is absolute perfection. You're not going to do any better
than this song right here. And if I were the people running country music, I would shut it
Houser, Randy --- Randy Houser has a huge fan in Reba McEntire. She's Twittered about
how much she loves his music and even mentioned him in her video chat with her fans.
"The latest album I have downloaded is Randy Houser. If you haven't gotten his album, it's
incredible." Randy is getting set to hit the road with his buddy Jamey Johnson on the C-M-T
Jewel --- Jewel has announced her fall tour schedule, which kicks off October 27th in
Baltimore. Tonight she's in her home state of Alaska for a show at the Atwood Concert Hall
Lady Antebellum --- Lady Antebellum's Hillary Scott documented her first love in the band's
song "Can't Take My Eyes Off You," and even though the relationship didn't last, she has a
nice memory when she sings it. She tells Detroit's Free Press, "It's the kid in me, but with
the accordion, all I can think of is the spaghetti scene from Lady and the Tramp.
--- Hillary, Charles and Dave join Miranda Lambert and Kenny Chesney for a show in Detroit
tomorrow (Saturday) night.
Lambert, Miranda --- Miranda Lambert channels an unexpected performer when she takes
the stage every night -- Beyonce. Ran tells us, "I copy everything she does besides dancing
because I'm pretty white. I'm not even ashamed of it, because everyone great took from
someone else great." She got to see the R-and-B superstar in Dallas last month and met
her backstage. In her blog, Miranda writes, "She was so nice and very soft spoke. I think I
said like 100 words in one minute though. We had a blast and the show was unbelievable.”
--- Look for Miranda to pull out her own bootylicious moves when she opens for Kenny
Chesney tomorrow night in Detroit.
McEntire, Reba --- Reba McEntire did a video chat on YouTube this week and answered fans
questions about her new album, her most embarrassing moment, her favorite artists and
whether she'd ever do Dancing With the Stars, among other things. She said Dancing With
the Stars would be out of the question because it's too much work; she loves Randy Houser
and Taylor Swift; and her most embarrassing moment had her crawling off the stage in the
dark. "We were supposed to do our last song and the lights go off and then we go off stage.
As I was shuffling off stage, my feet hung onto the monitor and fell over the monitor and
crawled off stage and ripped my britches.”
Pets & Country Stars --- Country stars are always talking about their pets. Nowadays artists
Tweet about their cats and dogs, but some have even put their pets on their album covers.
--- Probably the most famous dog in country music is Dierks Bentley's dog Jake, who
appears on the cover of his debut album. Jake is known to be very protective of the family's
baby, Evie Bentley, even biting guests who get too close. Dierks also has a beagle-mutt
--- Kellie Pickler basically owns a small zoo, with a Chihuahua named Moo Moo, a cat named
Pickles, a snake and a Lab. Her sister Courtney recently adopted her Marmoset monkey,
Ella. Kellie says it became challenging to take care of Ella because she couldn't travel.
--- Taylor Swift likes to show off her cat Indi, including her in multiple MySpace videos and
even Tweeting about her.
--- Carrie Underwood's Rat Terrier, Ace, just became famous. He's featured in the video for
her hit "All-American Girl." Carrie is known to take Ace everywhere and bring a suitcase full
of toys on the road.
Pickler, Kellie --- Kellie Pickler's love for shoes has inspired her to support Soles for Souls by
encouraging fans to bring new or gently used shoes to a shoe drive prior to her August 27th
appearance with Taylor Swift at New York's Madison Square Garden. Kellie says, "I love
shoes, but they are more than just a fashion statement, they are a necessity and not
everyone has access to them because of financial reasons or natural disaster. Whatever the
situation, Soles for Souls is there to help and I'm glad to lend my support.”
Rascal Flatts --- Rascal Flatts is the largest-selling and top-grossing group in Country music
history and Billboard’s Top 10 Touring Act in all genres with more venue attendance records
than any other country act. To sweeten their success, Rascal Flatts has just sold their 4
millionth concert ticket in four years. The recently accumulated concert ticket sales include
their two sold-out stadium shows in Chicago and Columbus this summer. Meanwhile, their
album “Unstoppable” has been certified platinum. The CD is the group’s fourth consecutive
studio album to open at No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200. This brings their career album
sales to a staggering 20 million in just this decade alone. The band has also amassed 10.5
million digital downloads. The “Rascal Flatts Unstoppable American Living Tour” runs
Rucker, Darius --- Darius Rucker celebrated selling over a million albums of his country
debut Learn to Live at a party Nashville's swanky Sambuca restaurant. Darius told us he
never expected this album to do so well. "I thought we made a special record, but I know
the business; there's a lot of great records that get made that no one's ever heard. I know
how hard it is to have a million-selling record." Darius is currently in the studio working on
his follow-up C-D.
Swift, Taylor --- Taylor Swift’s “Fearless” has earned 14 gold and platinum certifications
around the world. The album is approaching quadruple-platinum status in the U.S. alone
and has been certified triple-platinum in Australia and Canada, as well as platinum in
Singapore, New Zealand, Ireland, Indonesia, Malaysia and Taiwan. Gold certifications come
from the United Kingdom, Norway, South Africa, Hong Kong and the Philippines. Swift will
perform this weekend in Chelmsford, England. She’s also scheduled to perform at Wembley
Arena in London on November 23rd.
Twain, Shania --- There's been much speculation about Shania Twain's birthday surprise to
her fans. Though she doesn't reveal what it is, she has released a video tease from her
home in Switzerland inviting fans to visit the site on her 44th birthday to learn more. She
says, "You've been really wonderful. Thank you so much. So on August 28th, if you click
onto my site you'll see the little gift I have for you on my birthday." People-dot-com reports
that the surprise is not new music, but is possibly a video travelogue of where she's been
over the last year.
