The Gospel of César Chávez: My Faith in Action is a just-
released collection of his reflections on a variety of spiritual
topics such as the power of faith, self-sacrifice, nonviolence,
social justices, fasting, pilgrimage, and others. Edited
and introduced by Mario T. Garcia, it stresses the central
importance of faith to an understanding of the life and career
of César Chávez, the great farm labor and civil rights leader.
Following introductory remarks by the editor, this event will
feature a panel discussion with Edwina Barvosa, Department
of Chicana and Chicano Studies, UCSB; Rudy Busto,
Department of Religious Studies, UCSB; Fr. Jack Clark
Robinson, O.F.M., Dept. of History, UCSB; Rev. Wayne
Hartmire, former Director of the Migrant Ministry; and Juan
Vicente Palerm, Chair, Department of Chicana and Chicano
Studies, UCSB. Courtesy of The Book Den, copies of The
Gospel of César Chávez will be available for purchase and
signing.
Mario T. García is a professor of history and Chicano studies
at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is the
author of several books on Mexican American leaders,
including Mexican Americans:
Leadership, Ideology, Identity.
