President HH Sheikh Zayed bin Su ltan Al Nahyan
President, United Arab Emirates

Assalamu alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakaatuhu.

It is our great pleasure to submit this proposal for your consideration through Dr. Shaikha Al
Maskari. Along with the proposal made by Dr. Eisen of the Stanford University Relig ious Studies
department, we feel that this will exp ress the vision and hope we have for the future of the Muslim
community at Stanford and in the United States as a whole.

The Islamic Society of Stanford Un iversity has a long and proud history. It predates both the
Islamic Society of North A merica and the national Muslim Students of America as one of the first Muslim
organizations in A merica. Throughout the years, one thing has remained constant: the desire and
dedication of Stanford’s Muslim students to study, preserve, and teach Islam. In recent years, we have
moved beyond serving s imp ly the local Muslim Ummah and now have the non-Muslim, A merican
community in mind. Stanford’s disappointing lack of faculty trained in the academic study of Islam has
been a focus of ours for some t ime, and, Alhamdulillah, the Relig ious Studies and History departments now
understand that building a faculty of Islamic studies is imperat ive and should be a high priority. We p lan to
do the same with the departments of Foreign Languages, Polit ical Science, International Relations,
Sociology, Economics, Co mparative Literature, and Ph ilosophy, Insha-Allah.

At the same time, the Muslim co mmunity on campus and in the local area has been growing at an
astounding rate. It is critical that we p lan for the potential opportunities that lie ahead of us with foresight
and a long-term outlook. We make du’a that Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) continues to bless us as he has
in the past and thank you for taking the time to consider this proposal. We have taken this opportunity to
express the ideal as we see it and look forward to working together with you fee sabilillah. You may email
the officers of the Islamic Society at issu-officers@cs.stanford.edu or telephone me. My phone number
before January 3rd , 2000 is (510) 657-0223 and after that is (650) 497-5991.

Jazakumullahu Khayran wa alaykum as salaam,

Narjes Misherghi
President, Islamic Society of Stanford University
