MASTERS WORLD COMPETITIONS
The ICF has decided to become more involved with the running of the Masters World Competitions. First
step was made last year, but it will be necessary to take further actions.
It will be necessary to identify ICF officials to take on major roles at the Masters events. For future Masters’
events National Federations will be asked for nominations for Masters Competitions, World Championships
and/or both.

The time schedule used for 2010 was not satisfactory, and a number of points have been identified to try to
make it better:
• It was accepted that one session per day was not enough as there were too many boats on the water
at once and there should be two sessions per day.
• Starts should set off as quickly as possible.
• Where possible if there are small starts then there should be two classes put onto the pontoon at the
same time even though there would be two separate starts.
• 35 to 39 through to and including 50 to 54 for men only will be in the first session of the day.
• 55 to 59 and all the rest will be in the second session and all these will only do 4 or 3 laps.
• It should be noted that there is to be a change for the age group 55 to 59. This class will go from 5
laps to 4 for men and from 4 laps to 3 laps for women. C boats in 55 to 59 will also go from 4 laps to 3.
• Therefore all the first session will be for 5 laps only and the second session will be 4 and 3 laps.
• The time schedule will depend on the race venue each year.

ICF CANOE MARATHON – NEWSLETTER 2011-1 – APRIL 2011 Page 4/5
As it was difficult for the Masters to easily see which boats they were racing against the ICF is to prepare a
set of numbers which will identify each class.
Comment was also made by many paddlers that wash riding on other classes was taking place which is
against the rules (rule 27). This rule will be closely observed in future events by the event officials.

Minimum Class Definition. We see the need for having a rule to define where small classes are combined
into one race and this was agreed as follows:
“All classes shall have at least 3 entries to be considered quorate. Where there are only one or two entries
then those entries shall be moved into the next age class down. If there are only 2 entries then only the
gold medal will be presented. To present all three medals there must be at least 3 entries”.
Responsibility rests on the ICF Canoe Marathon Committee to advise paddlers if they fall into a small class
situation when the entry list has closed.

If there are between 3 and 8 entries then this class will start with the next class in a lower age.”

It was agreed that the closing date for entries will be 14 days before the first day of racing. All changes or
additional entries for previously entered paddlers must be completed before 12 noon on the day before the
race.

Start lists will be displayed on suitable notice boards at the race course and onto the event website.
