News Release US Army Corps of Engineers Engineer Research and Development Center Release No. A-5-08 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Jamal Beck Phone: (703) 428-3736 Topographic Engineering Center • 7701 Telegraph Road • Alexandria, VA 22315-3864 • http://www.erdc.usace.army.mil April 16, 2008 U.S. Army Topographic Engineering Center Director Receives Exceptional Civilian Service Award ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Mr. Robert Burkhardt, director of the Army’s Topographic Engineering Center (TEC), received the Army’s Decoration for Exceptional Civilian Service during an awards ceremony held at the Pentagon yesterday. This decoration is the highest Department of the Army honorary award granted by the Secretary of the Army. Nominees for this award must have established a pattern of excellence and achievements which normally have been recognized by previous honorary awards. Mr. Burkhardt was acknowledged for his exemplary leadership of TEC’s research, development, and operational support, resulting in critical operational support to deployed forces in the Global War on Terror; subsequent stabilization and reconstruction efforts in the Gulf region; and development and fielding of both updated and new geospatial systems to troops in the field. The Exceptional Civilian Service award was approved by the War Department on December 29, 1945, and consists of a gold medal, lapel button and certificate. ### The Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Topographic Engineering Center (TEC), located in Alexandria, Va., provides the warfighter with superior knowledge of the battlefield and supports the nation’s civil and environmental initiatives through research, development, and the application of expertise in the topographic and related sciences. The ERDC is the premier research and development facility for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, consisting of six laboratories and one center at four geographical sites with more than 2,000 employees and an annual research program approaching $1 billion. It conducts research in both military and civil works mission areas for the Department of Defense and the nation.
