Congratulations to Dave Cotner who will be the recipient of the 2011 Crystal Bell Award!! Thank you Mr. Cotner for making a difference in our school system and with our students!! Debate Club: The Highland Middle School has recently completed its first Debate Season. Student response was overwhelmingly positive!!. The students learned Debate techniques, Congress style speaking, Parliamentary Procedure, and engaged in lively debate with a variety of topics ending in an Official Middle School Congress Debate. Debate Coaches, Mrs. and Mr. Griffin look forward to expanding the season next year and thank Mrs. Mucha and staff for all of their support! Orchestra News: The Highland Orchestra Banquet will be held on May 24th @ 6:00pm in the HHS Cafeteria. Voyager news: The Voyager team has recognized their stand out students for the third quarter grading period. These students are: Language arts students are Abby Rivera, Britney Mauldin, Alex Vaca, Shane Peisker, Manasi Arya. Math students are Hannah Ryzewski, Zach Syvertsen, Gino Padilla, Adam Homrich, and Ashley Meloy. Science students are Jordan Hlinko, Paola Madrigal, Alicia Alcaraz, Jack Gluth, and Jenna Beck. PE students are Branden Pulleyblank, Kelsie Hirchak, Melanie Wright, Adam Zehner, and Daniell Rudnickas. Social studies students are Drew Stivers, Megan O’Donnell, Selena Santana, Nick Sansone, and Mikayla Goetz. We also recognized some exceptional students of the month. Our students of the month for April are Adam Homrich and Felicity Hillegonds. The students of the month for May are Killian O’Donnell and Sydney Macon. Congratulations to all these fine young men and women for a job well done. Our field day has been planned for May 23 with a rain date of May 25. This will be a fun filled day of wacky relays, a picnic, and field day activities. We are in need of some parent volunteers to help with the relays, assisting Mr. Cotner on the grill, and serving food. We will be sending out notes at a later date. Explorer News: Last newsletter of the year! Here’s what’s happening in Explorer classrooms: ● Mrs. Grinnell’s science classes are finishing up their chapter over climate and the various biomes of the world. The next chapter is about bacteria and viruses, discussing the characteristics of bacteria and describing reproduction of and treatment for various viruses. ● Mrs. Madura’s reading classes are working on a unit about informational texts. It includes articles such as “Toward a Rainbow Nation” and “What Makes Teens Tick.” ● From Mrs. Kusbel: “Students and parents have received the information about the Asia Travel Project and the nation that they will study. The students will present their projects beginning Monday, May 23rd. The students will have the week of May 9 -13th to work on these projects in the Media Center, but the majority of the project will be done at home. Parents and students are reminded to note the due dates for each section. This will help the students pace themselves through the project. Thank you.” ● Mr. Kikalos’s language arts classes are moving through poetry concepts, writing tales of monster- slaying based on Lewis Carroll’s “Jabberwocky,” and the honors classes will be finishing the year with Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. A reminder that Explorer students will be visiting the zoo for a field trip on Wednesday, May 18th. Dream Team News: In classroom news, students are completing a project for Mr. Havens’ classes. The project pertains to the US Civil War. Information was given to the students. If you are unaware of this project please ask your student about it. In team news, the end of the year is quickly approaching and there are several important dates that the Dream Team staff would like parents/guardians to know. Field Day - At the end of each school year the Eighth grade hosts a field day for their students. Both Eighth grade teams will be in need of chaperones for this event. The date for our field day is May 23rd; with the rain date scheduled for May 25th. Information for field day will be sent home with your student in the coming weeks. ECA’s - The End of Course Assessments or ECA’s are coming soon for all Algebra I students. The dates for the ECA’s are May 26th and 27th. Please make sure your student is well rested and well fed in preparation for these exams since the do count towards high school credit. Finals - Students will all have final exams at the end of this semester. Exams will be given on June 1st and 2nd. Students will take three finals each of the last two days of this school year. Dream Team Awards for the Third Quarter: The following are the Dream Team’s Stand Out Students for the third quarter. In Language Arts: Robert Ross, Clay Keltner, Heather Johnson, Kinsey Younker, & Julissa Iniguez. In Math: David Alcaraz, Jon Payne, Joci Hansen, Anna Mosiriak, & Clay Keltner. In Science: Shondell Pugh, Hayley Soltesz, Luke Wadkins, Julianna Shamel, & Jessica Hensen. In US History: Mina Salinas, Julissa Iniguez, Holly Santaguida, Blake Oliver, & Nate Montoya. The next awards went to students who the staff believed best displayed the character traits that HMS highlights each month for the Character Education Program. For the character trait Loyalty the winners were: Jon Payne, Matt Foundos, Kevin Pappas, Jeremy O’Donnell, & Emily Lozano. For the character trait Honesty the winners were: KC Cole, Tushar Sharma, Rachel Bremer, Anna Russo, & Camellia Bogdan. For the character trait Trustworthiness the winners were: Jackie Smailis, Lindsay Grysmski, Camellia Bogdan, Joe Stoica, & Matt Foundos. Finally, for the character trait Teamwork the winners were: Holly Santaguida, Jacob Dolan, Kylie Smolar, Beth Lula, & Nick Kizman. Finally, the team staff chooses two students, one male and one female, who best represent and display the ideals of what it means to be an outstanding Dream Team student each month. The Students of the Month winners for the month of March were: Anna Russo & Robert Ross. The Students of the Month winners for the month of April were: Chloe Conaway & David Alcaraz. Students returning from an absence must bring a written explanation from home with the Child’s FIRST & LAST name on the note, and it must be signed by the parent or guardian. PTO: PTO will be sponsoring a Recognition Breakfast for students on May 10th during their Discover classes. Students being recognized will receive an invitation and a breakfast honoring their achievements this year. PTO provided a Faculty/Staff Appreciation Luncheon on May 5th. The PTO expressed their appreciation to the HMS faculty and staff for their hard work and dedication to the students of Highland Middle School. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!! PTO Walk-a-thon was held May 5th and 6th during Discover classes. All students who donated $5.00 enjoyed some fun in the sun and some physical activity. They also had a chance to win some great prizes. PTO will be presenting and awarding a $250.00 scholarship to a deserving Highland High School Senior during Honor's Night at Highland High School on May 26th. The PTO Board would like to welcome Carin Olah as the new Secretary. We are still looking for someone to fill the Vice President vacancy. If interested, please contact any PTO member. The PTO will be purchasing T-shirts for all the 8th grade students. We wish them good luck as they begin their High School years! The next PTO meeting will be held Monday, August 29th at 6:00pm. We will be discussing events for the upcoming year and hope to see you there!
