Title: Determining Polygenic Inheritance

Overview: Students will investigate polygenic inheritance by conducting an experiment
in which they measure the heights of students in their class. Polygenic
inheritance occurs when a group of gene pairs acts together to produce a
single trait. The result is a wide range of phenotypes for that trait. Students
will measure and record the heights of students to the nearest centimeter in a
data table. They will enter the data collected into a spreadsheet and use
formulas to calculate the range, the median, and the mode. Lastly, they will
create a bar graph showing the results of the phenotypes for height.

Standard:
North Carolina Standard Course of Study
             Science Grade 7:
Competency Goal 3: The learner will build an understanding of heredity and
                                   genetics.
             Unifying Strands:
                 Science as Inquiry
                 The Nature of Science
                 Science and Technology

             Computer Competency Goals:
                Use word processing/spreadsheets for assignments/projects

Materials:
 Student worksheet ( see attached sheet)
        Microsoft Works software
 Book, Cheaper by the Dozen
 Textbook: Glencoe, Science Voyages, Grade 7
Skills:
 Students will learn how traits are inherited.
 Students will learn that the different forms a gene may have for a trait are
              known as alleles.
 Students will learn about the first scientific study of how traits pass from one
              generation to the next.
 Students will identify the polygenic traits of the children in the book, Cheaper
              by the Dozen
 Students will measure the height of other students in their class.
 Students will organize data into a class data table.

On the Computer:
 Using Microsoft Works to organize and interpret data collected into a
         spreadsheet
 Using Word Processing Skills to enter data into a spreadsheet
