About: I am Craig Wimmler and I live in Plym-
outh, Wisconsin. This is my 2003 Pontiac Grand Am
SC/T. I bought this car two months ago because I
needed something with better gas mileage than my
truck. Like any vehicle I have had I can’t leave
it alone. I just have to modify it and improve its
appearance. As my wife would say, I’m obsessed
with my vehicles. I guess you could say “CAR
CRAZY” like the Meguiar’s Speed Channel TV
show. I have changed the appearance and perfor-
mance of my Grand Am. Here is a list of the things
I have done so far. I still have plans for many more
performance mods.

About: I’ve been driving my 1994 Saturn sc2 for a
long time, but I have made the more modifications and
have had the most fun with it over the last 12 months.
Until last year, this was my dad’s car - the car I learned
to drive a stick-shift in. I never paid much attention
to it since it was just transportation for the family. In
August, I had already been 6 months late getting my
license and decided to keep the Saturn instead of driv-
ing an import like all my neighborhood friends. After
almost a year I can say I’m happy with the success I’ve
made in changing the car and making it run like new. I
plan on buying another car, but I still haven’t decided
weather to buy a Firebird Trans Am for weekends at
the drag strip and keep the Saturn as my daily driver,
or buy another economical car and keep the Saturn as a
show car. Either way I am happy I drive a domestic!

stock with the GM L61 (2.2 Liter ECOTEC Inline

add-ons were: Leather Trimmed Interior, Steer-

Factory Spoiler, Power Windows and Mirrors, and
Keyless Entry. The car was totaled in December
of 2005 and almost completely rebuilt by Febru-

from stock.

is targeted between 7500 and 9000 units. The
cars are expected to begin shipping in late June
or early July of 2006. With each dealer only
expected to receive one or two, these cars will
initially be hard to come by. My recommendation
if you are interested in this car would be to wait it
out for six months or so, until the price gouging
at the dealer subsides. This is a car sure to have
a “High Demand Price Adjustment” added to the
sticker at the dealer.
In a throwback to the original Shelby
GT350-H’s of the ‘60’s, Shelby has also reprised
his role with Hertz Rental Cars, producing
around 500 Shelby GT-H Mustangs. The Rent-

run. These cars will be available through the
Hertz Fun Collection at airports nationwide.
This car is not a Ford Shelby Cobra GT500, but
rather a Mustang modified and shipped through
Shelby, making it a more authentic Shelby than
the GT500. The car wears black paint with gold
stripes, just like the originals.
The 2007 GT500 promises to be the most
powerful Mustang ever, and one heck of a good
time! However, with the demand the way it is,
you won’t be able to get one of these in the short
term for the MSRP of $43,000. Shelby and Ford
have matched wits again and the thought of what
the future will hold is exciting. We’ll just have
to stay tuned!

The largest display area is the
famous Skydome portion of the Museum,
140 feet in diameter with a nearly 100-foot
high glass ceiling. Cars in this area, as in
every part of the Museum, are constantly

by magazines and auto shows the world over.
There are also several display cases showing
valuable Corvette collectibles.

visitors back to the front lobby. This area
houses an ever-changing display of specially

collection of Corvette whiskey decanters
and promotional models ending with an art
gallery and “Wall of Fame” picturing famous
Corvette owners and their beloved cars.

DATE: MAY 19-21, 2006
PLACE: WISCONSIN DELLS, WI

O
          n a beautiful weekend in May, 14 J-bodies
met up for the Midwest J-body Gathering
in Wisconsin Dells, Wis. The WI J-Tuners
(wij-tuners.org) put on the event. Some of the events
included hanging out, cruising, dining, a theme park,
mini-golf and car show.
The weekend event began Friday night.
Those who could make it up that night met up in the
parking lot of Riverview Park. A total of 10 J-Bodies,
1 Beretta and 2 other cars showed up. After a while of
talking and getting to know each other and their cars,
everyone went over to IHOP for some “breakfast”
around 9pm. The food there was delicious (as always)
and the service was great. After everyone was done
filling their stomachs, they headed back over to the
Riverview Park parking lot and one-by-one, called it
a night.
         Saturday morning, everyone gathered and
headed over to the Automotion 2006 Classic Car
Show. It is one of the biggest classic car shows in
the Midwest. It brings out over 900+ 1989 and older
cars. There were many beautiful cars there this year
just like always and for an added bonus they brought
in a portable dyno. After a few hours at the car show,
everyone headed over to Danny’s Diner for lunch. Then it was time for everyone to head back to rivere. Afterwards, everyone headed over to Timber

one that elicited smiles from the
participants! A show that nearly always
sees rain only had a shower that lasted less than
ten minutes - and was a sprinkle at that! The
over eighty cars on the show field represented
some of the finest Fieros in the country. Cars
in attendance ranged from bone stock 1300
mile specimens to heavily modified kit cars that
resembled Meras, GT40’s and the Fino.
Participants came from all over the
continent. A long distance award was given to
Lori and Anthony Cook who drove their 1988
GT down from Riverport, Nova Scotia; a journey

that carried them over 1500 miles. Other non-
Fiero driving attendees came in from Washington
state and Florida as well. Cars were also driven
in from Georgia and Michigan, among other
surrounding states.
Fieros at Carlisle is organized by the Mid
Atlantic Fiero Owners Association. MAFOA, a
regional club composed of one hundred and fifty
members, has been hosting Fieros at Carlisle
for twelve years. This year’s show was chiefly
organized by Tom Derr and Jennifer Goss, who
were assisted by many other members of the
club’s board and membership.
        Fieros at Carlisle included fourteen
classes, ranging from factory stock (all original,
generally low mileage cars), stock classes for
notchback and fastback Fieros (generally original
cars that are driven), high mileage classes (cars
over 125k; classes for notchbacks, fastbacks
and custom), custom classes for notchbacks and
fastbacks, modified classes for notchbacks and
fastbacks, a rebody/kitcar class and also a class
for work in progress. There were also over a

Participants and attendees also had the
chance to participate in the “What Part is it?”
contest sponsored by Wayne’s World of Fieros.
Participants could also enter a Chinese-style
auction that featured many great Fiero items
donated by numerous vendors such as the
FieroStore, Fiero Warehouse, FieroAddictions,
Mr. Mike’s, Freysinger Pontiac and others. The
FieroStore also sponsored the awesome looking
T-shirts that were given to all pre-registered
attendees.
Next year’s Fiero at Carlisle is already in
the planning stages. While the Carlisle Fairgrounds
may be sold, the show will be relocated to Carlisle
Productions new location if necessary. You can

SATURN TUNERS CLUB - NEW YORK CHAPTER
N
o, you’re seeing correctly. What sits in
front of you is the core of the Saturn
Tuners Club Chapter of New York. With
over 16 members, they are part of the much larger
National STC group. The New York chapter was
started about a year ago when it branched off of
the New England chapter. As you can see, we are
mainly composed of Ion’s, but we also have a
handful of SL’s, SC’s and even a VUE.
        I own a 2003 Ion 3 Coupe. Before I
became head of the NY chapter, I purchased my
Ion new in ‘03. A shortage of money kept me
from really going crazy with this car, but since
landing a sales position at Saturn of Medford/
Massapequa, I’ve started to finally get the ball
moving. First up was a full 35% tint all around
followed by the billet grille. I received an AEM
cold air kit as a gift and have since begun some
of the larger projects I have had in store for the
car.

The car was a 1987 Fiero GT fastback with
a lot of life left, but this fortunate car was about to
receive the ultimate face-lift. When they started, their
original plan was to build your typical Lamborghi-
ni replica - low, wide and very fast. But they asked
themselves how many replica Diablos are already
out there? They are everywhere and everyone knows
them not by the imperfect body lines and large gaps
but because of their sound. They took the advice of
a family friend, Francisco Vilalba, who later painted
the car, who said, “Build something unique, some-
thing no one else has, anybody can copy, but few can
engineer.” With this they decided to do a complete
one-off custom wide body version of Pontiac’s Fie-
ro.
The face-lift began. The car received a one-
off “plug” built on top of the existing chassis. This
process, which took them approximately 5 months,
gave them the surface to create the molds. They had
to hand lay every piece of fiberglass to create the
original molds and the final parts, which included
newly designed front and rear bumpers, rear quar-
ter panels, rockers, fenders, hood scoop and deck
lid. The knowledge of a “no-off,” the only one in the
world, pushed them finish the car. Many may ques-
tion the complexities of a wide body. How much
wider before it’s a wide body. Well, for them wide
meant wide. This custom Fiero is eight inches wider
in the rear and four up front. Just to put this into con-
text, we checked the measurement of a Lamborghini
to be 80.3 inches, and this Fiero was a staggering 78
inches compared to its mild GM twin. They believe
that’s probably wide enough to fill the shoe of a wide
body. From the BMW dual beam Hella assemblies,
Lamborghini doors, and deep dish wheels -- they got
it all.
With the body completed after endless hours
of fitting, molding in and problem solving the car was
in the flawless painted state which took lots of sand-

he May/June 2006 issue of Domestic Driver
took you through the body of this 2005 being
        disassembled, painted and then partially
reassembled (Project C6 Convertible- page 43). It
is now complete and ready for the 2006 Hot Rod
Power Tour!
GM’s Corvette will turn heads where
ever it goes. They produced 37,372 examples of
this vehicle for 2005 (26,728 coupes and 10,644
convertibles). This one is much different than the
rest! The nose, front fenders and rear quarters
were replaced with parts from a 2006 C6 Z06. The
rear quarters weren’t an easy bolt-on. The coupe’s
quarters are different than the convertible’s so they
had to be modified to fit on this car. The holes on
the carbon fiber front fenders were filled so there
are no emblems on them (export cars have lights
there). The alignment holes on the nose were also
filled so the Corvette emblem isn’t used at the scoop

car and then reassembled. This way there was no
                                                        chance of any over spray.

The 2005+ Corvettes don’t have spare tires so they
use what is referred to as Extended Mobility Tires

hen Joel Fisher went to purchase a new
car, he had a plan. The car was to have
a very specific purpose as a nice car
for him and his children to use for long trips and
special occasions, as well as to pull double-duty as
a drag strip toy. After narrowing down the choices
(and almost purchasing a 2002 Maxima) the choice
was finally made to purchase the 1999 GTP you
see here. Fisher had customized several different
rides, from a lifted Z-71 to a Nopi winning Accord,
but the Grand Prix offered something new.
Once the car was home, no time was wasted.
“I had already searched the net to see what was
out there for the GTP before I ever purchased it,”
Fisher said. The car was de-badged immediately
and the parts ordering began. Joel started with a
few low profile exterior mods that he felt would
make a large impact. First the windows were tinted
limo black and the Street Scene grills where painted
black to blend in with the front. Black out corner
lights (now unavailable) where added to complete
the black-out effect.
Satisfied with the mods to the exterior,
Fisher moved under the hood to make a little more
power. Intense-Racing.com was contacted for a
fender well intake, a 3.4 pulley for a little more
boost, and a 180 degree thermostat to keep things
cool. With just these few mods the GTP ran a
quarter mile best of 14.08@93 MPH.
Now that the car was looking better than
stock, it was time for some sound. “I always have
to have a nice stereo even if the weight is going to
kill the quarter mile times,” said Fisher. A rather
large undertaking, the stereo was going to be a big
part of this project, so Fisher mapped out what he
wanted done and enlisted CS Soundoff of Jackson,
Miss., to do the work. The subwoofer system alone,
which included three Image Dynamic ten inch
woofers, took almost two months to complete. The

next toy for the car. Zack’s goals for his Ford Focus
ZX3 are to have 250 - 300 wheel hp and have a low
to mid 13-second car in the quarter mile. Not only
does Zack like to race his car he also likes to show off
his car. His car has proven itself to be show worthy
as he frequently adds to his trophy collection.
Being the enthusiast Zack is, he is a great
example of what it takes to be a true car lover.
Whether it’s a fuel efficient car turning into your
dream car, a top fuel dragster, the ultimate show car
or a banging system, everyone has their interest in
cars. Zack’s is a ZX3.

Doug and his partner Keith Ori had been pre-

“When we got to the paddock we noticed
that there was coolant everywhere, and hoped we’d
just blown a water hose,” Wind said. They were still
searching for the offending water hose when a track
worker approached them with a still-hot connecting
rod. Wind says that Ori looked at the track worker
and said it couldn’t have come from their car because,
well, they’d have an enormous hole in the motor, and
they hadn’t seen one yet.
“That’s when they pointed out the hole,”
Wind says, “You could pass bread through it. I mean,
I don’t know how we missed it, but yeah, you could
look in the top end and see grass through the bot-
tom.” The One Lap of America was scheduled to
start three weeks later.
The Wind/Ori car started life as a stock SRT-
4, but was quickly converted to a drag car by its orig-
inal south Florida owner. That owner made a number
of modifications to the car, including a Mopar Stage
3 kit with Turbo Toys, Rage-Tek suspension bushings That would have been problematic as the would be doing most of the track work, wanted a roll

bottle supplied by NX Express and wired through a Beach. useable. This was necessary because Wind and Ori

brake pads.
There was also the matter of tripling the
spring rates as well. The IPP coil-overs came with
220lb rear springs and 350lb in front, and Ori was
worried that the car would just fall over on itself, so
he had Ground Control cut some Eibach spring that
roughly tripled the rates at all four corners. The car
was still streetable, which is important because the
2006 One Lap was 4000 miles long, but they did run
into one significant problem: they couldn’t type in
the car anymore.
“It sounds funny, but we committed to some
online blogs and website updates, and the car was so
stiff after that that it was just completely out of the
question!” Wind explains with a smile.
At Roebling, under the tutelage of Speed
World Challenge driver Brian Smith, they were able
to get the car into a very respectable 1:28 second
bracket, on old tires. For the race they had larger
(245/40-17) Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 tires coming,
so everyone was very optimistic.
Looking through the motor at the grass be-
low, Wind remembered wondering how it was ever
going to get fixed in time for the race. He called
around and got connected with MoparSupercenter.
com, the online parts website run by Hendrick Dodge
out of Charleston, S.C.
MSC agreed to replace the motor (which would have
been covered by the warranty if the nitrous, which
was never used, had not been installed) at a signifi-
cant discount and the car was there almost overnight.
It was finished just days before the race, partly be-
cause the Mopar technicians had to work over the
phone with Nemo to identify where some of the non-
OEM equipment went.
Wind and Ori used the 950 miles from
Charleston to the start of the One Lap in South Bend,
Ind., as the motor’s break-in period - the rule being
not to exceed 100 m.ph. Everything held together.
