                  What happened?
                On March 30, 1981, Ronald Reagan was addressing a labor
        convention at Hilton Hotel in Washington D.C. As he left the hotel,
    John Hinckley fired 6 bullets. The President and three other men where
         shot. R. Reagan was taken to Washington University Hospital. He
       underwent surgery, and didn’t return to the office until April 11. The
                            President eventually was completely recovered.

• At the trial in 1982 John Hinckley was indicted with thirteen offenses.
  He was found not guilty because of his insanity. He had mental
  problems. J. Hinckley was given an indefinite term at St. Elizabeth’s
  Hospital in Washington. President was not the only one shot by him. At
  the same time Press Secretary James Brady, police officer Thomas
  Delanty, and Secret Service agent Timothy McCarthy were injured.
  Brady was shot in his head. His brain was injured, and he permanently
  disable. The other two victims were not injured as seriously and
  recovered. Hinckley did not attempt to escape. He was arrested right at
  the scene.

  The shot penetrated Reagan’s left chest and stopped an inch away from
  his heart and aorta. It was a successful surgery. The doctors fortunately
  found the bullet. More than 3 liters-50 percent of his total blood-had been
  replaced. President Reagan also used humor to recover from his injury.
  That was probably one of the reasons why he survived the assassination
  attempt. He was positive about it and that helped him to recover even
  faster. His grace and wit during the dangerous incident caused his
  popularity to soar.

Here are some interesting facts about President Reagan. Before he became
  President he was a radio announcer, and commentator, actor and public
  speaker. He was the governor of California. He was 6'1'' tall. He liked
  horse-back ridding and swimming. The President also had a dog named
  rex. Reagan was the oldest president in history of the U.S.A.-he was 77
  years old when he left the office. He was the only president to be a head
  of a labor union, and he also saved 77 people working as a lifeguard.
  The President broke his thighbone in six different places when he slid
  into the first base at a celebrity baseball game. Reagan was the only
  president to be born in “The Land of Lincoln.”

• Ronald Reagan’s presidency will be remembered for many things. He
  survived an assassination attempt after being in office for only three month.
  He gained the hearts of Americans as he used humor to recover from his
  injury. The President charmed supporters and opponents alike. “Regardless
  of one’s political view, this man had captivated millions by sharing his love
  of life and sense of purpose with the world.”
