ARARAT SHRINE NEWS VOlUMe 76 JUNe 2011 NUMber 6 Nobody Told Me! BY STEVE DOWDY T here is a parade unit in Ararat Temple called the Mounted Guard. That sounds like they might have a bunch of horses that they like to ride in parades, and I think that’s correct. But they do some other stuff that doesn’t have much to do with horses or any other kind Bass Tournament of “mount.” I think they should be given Highlights a little recognition for the other work that they do to support our Temple. The biggest fundraiser that they run is called the Ararat Mounted Guard Buddy Bass Tournament. If you’ve ever been to our circus, you’ve probably seen some of these same Nobles just inside the front door, stand- ing on little towers up above the crowd, selling Circus Programs. They’ve sold a whole, big, bunch of programs over the years. They’re always there. They also spend a lot of money sponsoring a special circus performance for kids. They always fill the auditorium with kids; mostly grade school kids. It’s really interesting, or moving, or inspir- ing to stand there and watch 8,000 young people sing the Nation Anthem. It’s fun to simply watch and listen to all of the future Nobles and Ladies laughing and screaming for the Circus act. It’s im- pressive to look around the darkened au- ditorium as all of these kids wave their lighted swords and wands. The Mounted Guard does all of this stuff, and you might guess that they must be pretty successful at raising money if they can pay for all that they do. The biggest fundraiser that they run is called the Ararat Mounted Guard Buddy Bass Tournament. Noble Jack Requested Address Service Everly was the Chairman in 2011, as he was in 2010. It’s really an impressive bit Permit No. 595 of work, and it raises most of the money Kansas City, Mo. the Mounted Guard needs. It also works PA I D the Mounted Guard members pretty hard, Kansas City, MO 64129-1998 and not just for one weekend. The Bass US Postage 5100 Ararat Drive Non-Profit Org. After the parade we all met at the Fairgrounds and enjoyed a dinner that was catered by the City for all Shriners and their Ladies. I would like to share the following copy of an article that appeared in The Mar- shall Democrat-News on May 12, 2011. Shriners to parade Saturday, May 14 By Sarah Reed/Staff Writer Saturday, May 14, is shaping up to be an event-filled day in Saline County. One of the highlights will be the Shriners parade, scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. “This is the only all-Shrine parade in the state. All four temples will be ” here, said Russ Cooksey of Saline County Shrine Club. The other three groups are Moolah of St. Louis, Abou Ben Adhem of Springfield, and Moila of St. Joe. The temple, or chapter names are Egyptian derivatives and there are now more than 411.000 members in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Panama, Germany, Puerto Rico and the Philip- pines. In the early 1870s, Shriners began as a social organization; however, as their philanthropic work developed, so did the number of Shriners Hospitals for Children. There are now 22 total hospitals, and the organiza- tion is dedicated to providing free medical care for children. The parade will begin at Marshall High School, make its way down Ar- row Street and around the square. A car show will be set up in the shop- ping center parking lot and a hospital van will be on site. ” “Anyone with a child who needs help, come see us, Cooksey said. Some of the medical conditions treated at Shriners Hospitals are burns, cleft palate corrections and spinal chord injuries. The first hospital was built in Shreveport, La., in 1922. A mini 18-wheeler will accompany the parade as well as segways and bagpipes. 16 | ARARAT SHRINE NEWS JUNE 2011 Circus Mom and Dad Program Supporters T hank you to the following Nobles and Ladies for supporting the Circus Mom and Dad Program by purchasing your pins.
