Teen Depression by the Youth Department

Depression affects 1 in 8 teenagers of all races and gender. It can be caused by
genetics, environment, life events, medical conditions and the way people react to things
that happened in their lives. It can cause headaches and many other stress related
problems. Some people do not understand depression and believe that it is a mood
change when in reality the devil has their minds.

The devil causes teens to hide their depression so that they cannot get help. He
puts images in your head to make you feel that your life is worthless. This is what leads
to suicide rates. Depression does not pass easily. This is where you have to stop yourself
and recognize that this is nothing but the works of Satan. Jesus Christ is here to offer you
an alternative to the destruction that you are leading yourself to. In James 4:7 it states
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Do
not entertain the devil, for that just pushes him to attack more. If you keep your mind
focused on God, then the devil will leave you because you are more then a conqueror.

Also keep the scripture of Deuteronomy 31:8 in mind, “And the Lord, he it is
that doeth go before thee, he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake
thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.” The Lord is telling you that you are not alone.
The devil is deceiving you by making you think that you’re all alone and no one
understands you. However, you need to remember that God remembers you and He is
not a God that fails. Keep Him close in your heart for He will give you strength to carry
you out of the warfare.

To respond to someone with depression, show love, kindness, and support, which
are all the aspects of what the church does. You have to encourage them and help them
get help from the Lord. Counseling from the leaders of the church can be effective. A
teen’s mind has to be willing to change in order for help because Jesus is the solution to
all our problems.

According to Sis Ariel:
“Depression is a very bad illness to suffer from, because it shows the lack of faith
in Jesus Christ. Depression causes us to be sad and miserable within our lives and
because the problems are uncontrollable, we hold onto it instead of letting it go and
giving it all to Jesus”. For example, “I have a friend by the name of Kayla that I met last
summer at the camp. Kayla and I became so close that we began to have overnight
sleepovers at my home in queens. I remember Kayla crying every time I asked her about
her mom and why she does not live with her mom. Kayla said that her mother and father

went through a horrible separation and divorce when she was 5 yrs old because her
mother was addicted to drugs and it created a lot of fighting in their house. Her dad won
custody of her and her mom gain visits with her every weekend. Kayla then said she
wished she had both parents living together like mine and how lucky I was to have both
my parents. I felt really bad for Kayla and invited her to church with my mother and me.
Kayla felt a little out of place because she did not have the appropriate clothing to wear.
I offered her something to wear out of my closet, but when Kayla asked her dad to come
to church with me, he wanted her to attend, but because Sunday’s was the days she spent
with her mother, the mother refused to allow Kayla to come to church.

Seeing Kayla and how depressed she was about her parents showed me how much
Kayla and her family need to have God in their lives. Psalms 31:1-4 stated, “In thee, O
LORD, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness. Bow
down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for a house of defense
to save me. For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name’s sake lead me,
and guide me. Pull me out of the net that they have laid privily for me: for thou art my
strength.” David showed us although we are going through hard times within our lives,
we can always call on our Lord and Savior to deliver us out of any problems we are
facing. When you have Christ in your life, you will always find peace and happiness.
