Food Chains and Webs
Grade Level: 5th Grade
Standard: 5-2.4
Identify the roles of organisms as they interact and depend on one another through food chains
and food webs in an ecosystem, considering produces and consumers (herbivores, carnivores,
and omnivores), decomposers (microorganisms, termites, worms and fungi), predator and prey,
and parasites and hosts.

Procedure:
1. Butternut Hollow Read Aloud – 10 minutes
a. Read Aloud
b. Discuss the ecosystems that are here
2. Terminology – 10 minutes
a. Discussion of words
i. Producers
ii. Consumers
iii. Decomposers
iv. Predator
v. Prey
vi. Food Chain
vii. Food Web
3. Skulls – 20 minutes
a. Students will observe several different types of skulls and determine what the main
source of food is based on dentition.
4. Drawing / Classifying Organisms for Food Chains – 20 minutes
a. Students will either draw organisms on cards or sort pre-made cards into groups of
producers, consumers and decomposers.
b. Students will create food chains with the cards they have.
5. Create Food Chains – 20 minutes
a. Students will create their own food chains in geographically appropriate areas.
b. Share with class
6. Cross the Ocean – 20 minutes
a. Students will observe predator / prey relationships while playing a game.
7. Hunting & Escaping Video – 20 minutes
a. Students will view various ways that animals hunt.
