            A primary issue in this dissertation is how could learning strategies improve
students’ understanding of Islamic literatures (written in Arabic or known as kitab
kuning) at .........................’s boarding school of .........................? The aim of this
dissertation is to describe methods in learning Islamic literatures (kitab kuning),
revealing factors that inhibit and support learning processes, as well as to analyze and
formulate solutions to solve problems in learning Islamic literatures (kitab kuning) at
.........................’s boarding school of ..........................
            The dissertation’s research is a qualitative research. Descriptive data is
acquired from expressions or behaviors of the research’s participants. Then, data is
analyzed to obtain the correct result. The approach is naturalistic and supported with
pedagogic, psychological, historic, and management approaches. Data collection
techniques such as interviews, observations, and documentation are used in the
research.
            The results showed that the learning process to understand Islamic literatures
at ........................., still use conventional methods such as wetonan/bandongan and
sorogan. Both methods are used by a kiai (a senior teacher or scholar) while
assistants or teachers who helped the kiai combining conventional (wetonan and
sorogan) and modern methods. Implementation of learning methods also faces
changes in organizational strategies, delivery and management. There are some
factors that hindering the implementation of Islamic literatures learning strategies at
.........................’s boarding school of ........................., for example: 1) Ethical relation
between the kiai (senior teacher/scholar) and students. 2) Full learning activities 3)
