                                                                                                                                             What makes my truck so special is, it’s mine. I love the lines, the comfort, the

                                                                                                                                             My first GMC was a used and abused 1978. I was so impressed by that old truck,
                                                                                                                                          that in 1990 I bought a new one. I had that one for three years and needed more
                                                                                                                                          room, so I bought a new 2-wheel extended cab. I loved that truck too. Well, my newest
                                                                                                                                          is a 2001 Extended Cab Z-71 Off Road and I just love this truck.
                                                                                                                                             I tow a 24' cabin cruiser with this new truck and wow; I now have no problems at
                                                                                                                                          launches. I have no problems with power as it has a lot of it, with more to spare. And
                                                                                                                                          the fuel mileage is awesome for a full size 4x4 truck. I’m out every weekend washing
                                                                                                                                          and shining it up before we go anywhere. I wax it at least once a month.
                                                                                                                                             My wife says I love my GMC Truck more than her. Sorry dear, I know my GMC
                                                                                                                                          will be there for me 365 days a year; I know my wife won’t divorce me for saying
                                                                                                                                          this – she loves it too. Keep up the good work GMC because my next truck is going to
                                                                                                                                          be another GMC.

                                                                                                                                              time. Not only can several hundred road-ready engines be produced
                                                                                                                                              per shift, the St. Catharines plant is also home to five machining lines
                                                                                                                                              where blocks, cams, rods, heads and cranks are carefully crafted and
                                                                                                                                              prepped for assembly. Extreme care is taken on every machining line
                                                                                                                                              to ensure top-quality engine parts are produced before the delicate
                                                                                                                                              task of assembling the Sierra’s V8 engine even begins.

                                                                                                                                              BLOCK LINE – THE LARGEST MACHINING LINE
                                                                                                                                              Every 24 hours shipments of raw castings arrive from around the
                                                                                                                                              world. Each rough iron block is then placed on a continuous transfer
                                                                                                                                              line, which takes it through the four lines until it’s fit for assembly, a
                                                                                                                                              process that takes about six hours. A few hundred blocks are spread
                                                                                                                                              out along that transfer line between many operations. The first
                                                                                                                                              portion, known as the Roughing Line, takes a total of 50 lb. of iron
                                                                                                                                              off the casting as the cylinder boards and front and rear faces are cut.
                                                                                                                                              Then the block enters the Drilling Section where 183 holes are drilled,
                                                                                                                                              including the bank face holes that keep the engine in place. Next up,
                                                                                                                                              the bearing caps are put on. Cam bushing, final cuts, cylinder bore
                                                                                                                                              honing and final touch-ups to the crank happen in the last leg. Then
                                                                                                                                              it gets washed and loaded by robotics onto a transfer rack, on which it
                                                                                                                                              will be carted off to assembly.

                                                                                                                                              CAM LINE – HIGH PERFORMANCE
                                                                                                                                              All of the camshafts machined at the plant are high performance for
                                                                                                                                              vehicles like the Pontiac GTO, the Chevrolet Corvette and of course,
                                                                                                                                              the GMC Sierra. In fact, the truck model is the major engine produced
                                                                                                                                              on the cam machining line. Turning a rough machined raw cam from
                                                                                                                                              Ohio into a precisely machined performance camshaft takes four
                                                                                                                                              hours. During that time it’s milled, ground, heat-treated, lapped,
                                                                                                                                              washed, visually inspected and of course, gauged, where thousands
                                                                                                                                              of points are checked, at every angle, diameter and degree with high
                                                                                                                                              precision. A critical operation on this line is the Induction Hardener,
                                                                                                                                              which ensures that there’s a hard surface on the cam lobes so they
                                                                                                                                              don’t wear out prematurely.
