Minutes Auto Body Advisory Committee October 19, 2004 Call to Order Chair Gary Jensen called the meeting to order at 6:35 a.m. Introduction / Attendees Management: Bo Wade, Production Manager, Titus Will Ford Gary Jensen, Owner, LDI James Rowling, State Farm Insurance Labor: Joe Brewer, Painter, Rainier Collision Shane Dietrick, Estimator, Multan’s Collision Bruce Forness, Paint Supply Sales, Wesco Autobody Supply Marty Faust, Paint Representative, LDI Supervisor: Cheri Loiland, Director of Instruction and Home & Family Life, Bates Technical College Instructional Staff: Bill Byrn, Auto Body Instructor, Bates Technical College Doug Yarbrough, Auto Body Instructor, Bates Technical College Administrative Support: Dorothy Henifin, Administrative Assistant, Bates Technical College GAC Representative: Student Representative: Student Services Career Specialist: Approval of Minutes The minutes from the previous advisory meeting on May 19, 2004 was approved. Program Overview NATEF Certification: The NATEF certification is in progress. The necessary tools and curriculum are in place. The instructors are now working on having a cabinet built to house the safety glasses that the students will be required to wear. They also must put together and update the materials in their book, which is the documentation of what they are doing and how they do it. Once they have finished with those items, they can submit the initial application. Skills USA: The Auto Body Program will be involved in the Skills USA contest again this year, and help from the advisory board members will be needed. Student Placement: Two students have been placed so far this year. SIU Student: We have a student from Southern Illinois University out of Fort Lewis who is getting his bachelor’s degree in vocational education. As part of his program, he needs experience teaching adults and is doing his student teaching here. He has a background in Culinary Arts and Auto Body. Prep Deck: There was discussion about the need for a prep deck. Invitation to Members to Observe: Doug invited members to come in to the Auto Body shop to observe the students or to give a presentation to the students. We could also send students to shops to watch how the work is done in the real world. Ambulances: We are partnering with the Parkland Rotary, who has an international grant, to repair three to five ambulances that will go to the Guatemalan fire department. Technical College Update Presidential Update: Cheri Loiland gave a presidential search update. The candidates have been narrowed down to four finalists and it is expected that the Board of Trustees will be announcing who the new president will be very soon. The new president is scheduled to start sometime in December or early in January. Budget Crunch: Due to a variety of things, the College is experiencing a temporary budget crunch, so we’re closely watching our expenditures. Enrollment: Enrollment at the College is down, but at South Campus enrollment is over 100 percent and most of the South Campus programs have waiting lists. Unfinished Business New Business Kris Manning: Kris Manning will be returning to South Campus next month. Donations: Members offered to donate some paint and air bags for the Auto Body Program to use. New Members: Bruce Lewis from Gilcrest is interested in being on an advisory committee. There was a discussion on the pros and cons of adding new members to the advisory board. Cheri will prepare a cover letter for prospective members.
