                                 2005 POST-GRADUATE SURVEY

                                         Executive Summary

This annual survey reports the employment and graduate school plans of the members of the class of
2005. A total of (*awaiting number from registrar*) students received degrees in May 2005. A total
of 836 students graduating with bachelor's, master's, or doctorate degrees in May 2005 responded to
the annual Career Services’ Post-Graduate Survey. The respondent pool consisted of 611 bachelor's
degree recipients and 226 graduate degree recipients. The survey was administered to the bachelor's
degree recipients at the time they picked up their caps and gowns for the commencement ceremonies.
The survey was administered to master's and doctoral candidates when they submitted their theses and
dissertations to the Vice President for graduate studies. Only students receiving terminal degrees were
included in this study; students who received an automatic master's degree while continuing
participation in a doctorate program at Rice were excluded.

BACHELOR'S DEGREE RECIPIENTS

Forty-four percent of the respondents in the class of 2005 reported that they would attend graduate
school in the fall of 2005. In comparison, 40% of last year's graduating class chose this option. Forty-
eight percent of the respondents indicated that they planned to enter the workforce immediately,
compared to 53% of last year's graduating class. Five percent of the respondents indicated they would
pursue other options such as fellowships, internships, preceptorships, traveling, and volunteer work.
Three percent of those surveyed were undecided or did not indicate their post-graduate plans. Overall,
73% of the students graduating with bachelor's degrees actually had accepted jobs (168), had been
admitted to graduate or professional schools (248), or had other definite plans (29) as of graduation.

Graduate School

Of those students choosing to attend graduate or professional school, medical school was the most
popular option. Thirty-five percent reported they would be attending medical school in the fall of
2005. The next most popular options were law school (15%); hard sciences (13%); engineering (13%).
Other options included humanities (5%); music (3%); and social sciences (2%). Ten percent of total
respondents pursued degrees in public health, business, architecture, pharmacology, physical therapy,
education, social work, optometry, nursing and veterinary medicine. Three percent of respondents did
not indicate what they would study in graduate school. Only 2% indicated they would pursue a social
science degree in graduate school in contrast with last year's 4%. The percentage of respondents
pursuing a business degree (1%) also decreased significantly.

Employment

Of those students who had accepted jobs as of graduation, 50% accepted jobs in Houston and 15%
accepted jobs in other Texas cities. As for the rest of the United States, 10% accepted jobs in the
Northeast (69% of those jobs were in New York City and Washington, DC), 5% will work in the
South, 5% accepted jobs in the Midwest, and 6% will work in the West. Four percent of students
indicated they would be working in an international location including Japan, United Kingdom, and
Mexico. Five percent of students who had accepted job offers did not indicate the location of their
employer.

Students completed the post-graduate survey in May of 2005, prior to graduation on May 8, 2005. Of
the students who planned to enter the workforce, 57% had already accepted a job offer at the time the
survey was administrated and 6% did not indicate whether or not they had accepted a job offer yet.
The same is true for students indicating their decision to go to graduate school. At the time the survey
was administered, 93% of the students who planned to attend graduate school indicated a school where
they had already received acceptance. In 2004, the percentage of accepted jobs was the same as 2005,
but the percentage of students accepted to graduate school was slightly higher (97%).

MASTER'S & DOCTORATE DEGREE RECIPIENTS

Seventy-six percent of the graduate students responding to the survey reported that they had plans to
enter the workforce after graduation. This figure is slightly lower than last year (68% in 2004). Eight
percent indicated they would continue attending graduate or professional school for an additional
graduate degree. Twenty-six percent of the doctorate students (14% of all graduate students) plan to
have post-doctoral position. Two percent of master's students (1% of all graduate students) indicated
other plans including internships or preceptorships. Less than one percent did not respond to the
survey question. Overall, 58% of the students graduating with a master's or doctorate degree actually
accepted jobs, had been admitted to another graduate or professional school, or had other definite plans
as of graduation.

Of the graduate student respondents who had already accepted job offers, 20% will pursue careers in
academia, 62% will be working for private companies, and 14% accepted positions in the government
or military. The remaining 4% indicated that they had accepted offers in the workforce, but did not
identify their employer.

The five most popular professions were engineer, university instructor, research scientist, primary &
secondary school teacher, and environmental scientist. Engineers made up 27% of the respondents
who had already accepted job offers. Of the respondents who indicated engineering, 32% are civil &
structural, 29% are mechanical, 21% are electrical, 11% are software, and the remaining 7% are
chemical. University instructors were second most popular, making up 18% and research scientists
were third with 11%. Schoolteachers and environmental scientists each make up 8% of the total
students with accepted offers.

As mentioned with the bachelor candidates, students filled out this survey prior to graduation, which
was held in early May 2005. Many graduate students actually completed this survey as early as March
2005, when they began to submit their theses. As a result, at the time of the survey, only 52% of the
respondents who planned to enter the workforce immediately had actually accepted positions while
43% had not accepted a position and 5% did not indicate whether or not they had accepted a position.
Of the students who planned on continuing graduate school immediately, 73% indicated which school
they would attend while 27% did not. Finally, for those pursuing post-doc programs, 76% had been
accepted into a program while 24% did not indicate the post-doc program they planned to pursue.
