R. Steven Daniels – Department of Public Policy and Administration, California State University, Bakersfield
R. Steven Daniels is Professor of Public Policy and Administration at California State University, Bakersfield. He has taught at CSUB since 2000. Prior to his tenure at CSUB, Dr. Daniels worked for fourteen years at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from Southern Oregon College in Ashland, Oregon in 1972, and his Master of Science (1975) and Doctor of Philosophy (1981) degrees in Political Science from the University of Oregon. Dr. Daniels worked for several years as an auditor for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He worked as a member of the audit teams for the completion of Libby Dam in Montana and for the improvement of Chief Joseph Dam in Washington. He has also worked as a management and policy consultant for the Iowa Department of Human Services and the Alabama Department of Human Resources. Dr. Daniels’s research has focused on emergency management and homeland security, aging policy, welfare policy, and legislative roll call voting. He is the author or coauthor of eighteen refereed publications and book chapters in the areas of emergency management, decision making, aging, legislative behavior, and public policy in such journals as The American Political Science Review, The Gerontologist, Social Science Quarterly, The Journal of Criminal Justice, The International Journal of Mass Emergencies and Disasters, and The Policy Studies Review. He has received grants and contracts totaling over $83,000 related to disaster management, housing policy, and nursing home reform from several organizations including The IBM Endowment for The Business of Government, the Iowa Department of Human Services, the Gerald R. Ford Foundation, the George Bush Foundation, California State University, Bakersfield, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham Graduate School. Since 1992, he has written or co-written eight research reports and presented twenty-nine convention papers on presidential decision-making, FEMA, disaster management, aging policy, voting behavior, and welfare policy. Dr. Daniels teaches the single course at California State University, Bakersfield in Emergency Management and Homeland Security. He is interested in gathering information on strategies for improving enrollment and attracting resources to develop an emergency management concentration in the Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration and the Master of Public Administration.
