1709   C    POSTAL HISTORY: 1832 (Aug.28) entire letter from Sydney to London struck with "POST PAID SHIP
            LTR SYDNEY" oval handstamp in red, mss. "1/-" and "4" and backstamped LONDON March 7 1833 and
            INDIA LETTER PORTSMOUTH. With contents detailing a proposal by Capt. Samuel Henry to provide to the
            Wesleyan Missionary Society a vessel to visit their missionaries twice yearly stationed in the Friendly Islands
            (Tonga) and other island "outstations". The annual sum of £300 is quoted (together with another £350 from
            London Missionary Society) and the submission is supported with a recommendation from Revd. Orton.
            An interesting historical document and very early reference to the missionary work in the Friendly Islands

1710   D    1869 (Dec. 28) letter written from 'Corop, Lake Cooper Colony of Victoria, Australia' to USA, with the
            writer (John Laughlin) stating in part "...I arrived in Melbourne from the South Seas Islands, after being kept
            there two years in Captivity, the vessel I was in and partly owned was wrecked on a little Island called Tonga
            and what few escaped was detained there two years before they got away...". Later, references also to the
            Abolitionist Presidential candidate and the pending postal service from San Francisco to Sydney.
