Chairman’s Report 2009-2010
It is with great pleasure that I am able to report to our members on this
our 28th anniversary of The Lord’s Taverners in Victoria.
Like many charitable groups we face challenges to ensure we are
relevant to our constituency, ensure that we remain true to our goals
and ideals and have fun on the way.
We have continued to take great strides forward with our associations
with Cricket Australia and Cricket Victoria. Both organisations have
continued their active and positive involvement with us and supported
our drive to help those less fortunate than ourselves. We have now held
2 Boxing Day Breakfasts in the Cricket Victoria Room and will hold our
3rd this year during the Ashes Test against England. We thank Chairman
Geoff Tamblyn and CEO Tony Dodemaide of Cricket Victoria for their
continued support and encouragement.
The Committee listed earlier in this Annual report also deserves our
thanks for the time and effort they give to manage, organise and run
our various events. They give generously of their time to ensure we as
members are provided with the best events. Carolyn Johnson as our
secretary and Tim Winter as Treasurer deserve special thanks for efforts
beyond the call of duty – thank you very much.
The year has seen the Taverners support of numerous charities, all
efforts targeted at assisting those less fortunate than ourselves. This
year we awarded the first Lord’s Taverners Indigenous Cricket
Scholarship, aimed at supporting young developing male or female
indigenous cricketers. The inaugural winner was Alex Kerr. Alex has
represented Victoria in the Imparja Cup four times and is currently
playing with North Melbourne Cricket Club.
For almost 16 years the Victorian Branch of The Lord’s Taverners has
supported the Footscray Indoor Cricket Centre where we supplied net
costs and uniforms for the intellectually handicapped Indoor Cricket
Competition. Over 250 cricketers have passed through this program
during its existence.
Ausrapid has again been supported on a number of fronts through
events coordinated nationally. In Victoria we are particularly proud of
our continued support provided to the Australian Tennis Open for those
with a disadvantage. This tournament is played at the same time as the
Australian Tennis Open and attracts competitors from all over Australia

and overseas. We provide funds as well as active participation by
committee members.
During the year we held our Annual Legends of Victorian Cricket Dinner
at Royal South Yarra Tennis Club, inducting Bob Merriman, Alan
Connelly and Paul Reifel. The Junior Taverners we acknowledged were
Travis Dean, Meg Lanning and the Betty Butcher emerging players was
Natalie Schilov. The Annual Boxing day Breakfast was again a success
and was held at the MCG, Cricket Victoria Room. Our guests included
Osman Samiuddin from Pakistan, Greg Baum and Greg Champion.
Additional events included a visit to the MCC library to inspect the rare
cricket book collection and a relaxed evening with Rodney Hogg and
John MacWhirter discussing Victorian cricket.
This year we will be running our 4th major raffle and have set a target
to raise in excess of $100,000 around Australia by 31 March 2011. The
prize in the raffle is two return air tickets to London, accommodation
and spending money. We are very grateful to ETIHAD AIRWAYS for
their support and donation of the return air tickets. All Lord’s Taverner
branches around Australia are supporting the raffle and I urge you to
buy your tickets early to help make this raffle a success.
The Victorian Branch is very grateful for the continued support provided
by Etihad Airways, Primus Australia, Moule Printing, Waverley
Basketball Centre, Kookaburra Sport and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Their
support is gratefully appreciated.
Finally, in closing thank you to all members for your support,
encouragement and attendance at functions. We will continue to work
to make The Lord’s Taverners relevant and provide interesting functions
for its members. We are happy to hear from you at any time with your
feedback or comments.
Regards and Best wishes
