1st Grade

21st Century Learner Standard:
4.1.1: Read, view, and listen for pleasure and personal growth.
4.1.2: Read widely and fluently to make connections with self, the world, and previous reading.
4.1.6: Organize personal knowledge in a way that can be called upon easily.

Objective: The students will identify parts of a story (colors, rhyming words, and general knowledge).

Instructional Input:
          Anticipatory Set: What books have I read to you written by Dr. Seuss? (Review books and
            info about Dr. Seuss)
          Talk about Dr Seuss
             1st week – birthdate March 2nd; over 100 years old if he was still alive
             2nd week – real name Theodore Seuss Geisel; Cat in the Hat is 50 years old this year
             3rd week – his books are in 15 different languages; over 200 million copies; has 3
                 Caldecott honor books
             4th week – review facts
          Today we are going to read:
             1st week – The Cat in the Hat Comes Back
             2nd week – Horton Hatches an Egg
             3rd week – Yertle the Turtle
             4th week – The Butter Battle
          Ask questions about the books bringing out the rhyming words and the colors Dr. Seuss uses.
          Closure: Ask review questions about the new fact (and old ones too) about Dr. Seuss.

Evaluation: The teacher will observe who is participating.

Materials:
1st Week
      The Cat in the Hat Comes Back by Dr. Seuss
      Cat in the Hat puppet

2nd Week
     Horton Hatches an Egg by Dr. Seuss
     Horton the elephant puppet

3rd Week
      Yertle the Turtle by Dr. Seuss

4th week
      The Butter Battle by Dr. Seuss

1st Grade

1RS2 C1 PO1: Identify the plot of a literary selection, heard, or read.
1RS2 C1 PO2: Describe characters (e.g., traits, roles, similarities) within a literary selection.

21st Century Learner Standard:
4.1.1: Read, view, and listen for pleasure and personal growth.
4.1.2: Read widely and fluently to make connections with self, the world, and previous reading.
4.1.6: Organize personal knowledge in a way that can be called upon easily.

Objective: The students will answer trivia questions about Dr. Seuss and his books.

Instructional Input:
          Anticipatory Set: Do you think you know all about Dr. Seuss? Today we are going to see if
            you do. Today is Dr. Seuss Trivia Day.
          Play Dr. Seuss Trivia Pursuit.
             For every correct answer the class gets a point.
             For every incorrect answer the teacher gets two points.
          Closure: Turn to your neighbor and tell them one fact about Dr. Seuss or one of his books.

Evaluation: The students will answer trivia questions correctly at least 90% of the time.

Materials:
    Dr. Seuss Trivia Pursuit slide show for 1st grade
    LCD projector
    Whiteboard
    Markers
    Colored Magnets for playing pieces
    Spinner or dice
