                                                  Systemair has considerable experience in the produc-
                                                  tion of warm air curtains. All curtains are developed and
                                                  designed by our own highly skilled engineers at
                                                  Systemair’s factory in Skinnskatteberg, Sweden.
                                                  The factory is certified in accordance with the quality
                                                  assurance system ISO 9001 since 1993, and ISO 14001
                                                  since 1996. All air curtains have CE, SEMKO and NEMKO

       Research and development

                                                  research

                                                  Our center for scientific research and design is one of
                                                  the leading examples of its kind in Europe and is
                                                  equipped with the latest facilities for measurement of
                                                  aerodynamic, acoustic, thermal and other parameters
                                                  of manufactured equipment.

                                                  Research and measurements are regularly performed
                                                  both for development and experimental testing of new
                                                  models and for improving the operating characteristics
                                                  of existing products.

                                                  All measurements are conducted in accordance with
                                                  the requirements of the most widespread standards of
                                                  AMCA and ISO.

                                                  Acoustic tests and measurements
                                                  Our research and development center is equipped
                                                  with a reverberation chamber with a sound level less
                                                  than 10 dB(A). It is actually a complex consisting of
                                                  two chambers. The inner chamber, used for measur-
                                                  ing the sound level, is 33 tons in weight and is mount-
                                                  ed on 76 solid steel springs. This design facilitates its

                                                  mental test chamber, which allows climate modeling
                                                  inside the premises and outside it. It is possible to
                                                  conduct production tests even if the outside tempera-
                                                  ture drops below

      General overview of air curtains


What is an air curtain?
The purpose of an air curtain is to separate zones with dif-
ferent temperatures on either sides of open windows, entry
doorways and gates. By means of a high-speed airflow, an
“invisible barrier” is created, preventing warm air from
escaping and stopping cold air from entering the premises.
Thus the inner comfort of the premises is enhanced,
drafts disappear, heat losses are significantly lowered and,
as a result, so are heating costs.                                                         +                       =

Electrical connection
The installation is performed after the entire electrical circuit
has been shut down on the main switchboard. There are 6
(7 for LGXL) apertures at the front of the curtain for the
connection of 29 mm power-supply and control-module
wires. The entry connector point is meant for a cable with a

Unique casing design
For doorways up to 2.5 m in height, it is recom-
mended to use Portier Basic and Portier Basic
Design models. Air is sucked through the upper
part of casing.
Portier Grand and Portier Grand Design are more
powerful models for entrances and exits up to 4
m in height. They are a cumulation of all the
advantages contained in the Portier Basic and
Portier Basic Design series.




The casing has equally appealing panels on both

Portier Basic Design is mounted by using four threaded M6
holes in upper side of the casing.
The curtain can be fixed in stationary fashion upon a PBH
pendulum hanger from the ceiling or on PBS wall brackets
(a 2 piece set). PBS wall brackets must be ordered sepa-
rately.
The angle of the airflow can be regulated with the dis-
charge grille.
Electrical connection
The curtain must be protected by a three-pole switch, with
a minimal contact gap of 3 mm.
There are several ways the air flow velocity can be con-

Electrical connection
The air curtain power supply must be connected by quali-
fied personnel in accordance with the stipulated rules and
guidelines. The curtain must be protected with an all-pole
switch, with a minimum contact gap of 3 mm.

Water connection

Horizontal installation
Systemair air curtains are hung on the inside of the door-
way, as close to the upper end of the doorframe as possi-
ble. If several curtains are being installed, they must be
mounted side by side to avoid gaps in the airflow plane.
The top side of the device must be at least 30cm away
from the ceiling, to ensure an unobstructed air supply to
the curtain.
The curtain is installed on mounting brackets (supplied with
the curtain) as close to the doorway as possible. In case a
vertical-lifting door is installed, the curtain must be mounted
on a suspended beam, attached to the lower part of the
door lifting mechanism. A steel section or reinforced wood-
en beam fixed from both ends must be used.
The fan motor lead-outs are shorted to a terminal block
located at the top of the device in accordance with the cir-
cuit diagram.
Make sure that propeller spins freely and all transportation
fixtures are removed.
Set the airflow direction. This is very important!

Vertical installation
The curtains are installed in a column to the side of the
doorway, generating a horizontal airflow along the entire
height of the doorway. The devices are installed on mount-
ing brackets as close to the doorway as possible. Since the
air intake takes place through the upper part of the casing,
a 30 cm gap between it and the ceiling is required for
unhindered access for the air.
When installing the curtain in a vertical position, note that,
in order to eliminate cold drafts, the airflow must collide
with the opposite side of the gate.

Airflow control
The guide shutters tilt the airflow to compensate the pres-
sure differential created during the opening of the gates.
The wind pressure and draught affect the operation of the
curtain and can cause it to start drawing air from the out-
side into the building. In order to prevent this, the air dis-
charge plane must be directed from 15 to 30° towards the

                                                             High effectiveness of fan heaters is explained by their rate
                                                             of thermal transfer (hc). The high rate of thermal transfer
                                                             reflects the high rate of energy transfer (W/m 2K). The rate
                                                             of thermal transfer between the heater and a forcefully
                                                             induced air current (forced convection) is 3 - 8 times higher
                                                             than between a heater and still air (natural convection).
                                                             This means that, for a given rate of heat transfer, the area
                                                             of the fan heater’s heating element can be 8 times smaller
                                                             than that of a regular electrical convector. On top of that,
                                                             the fan heater creates a forced circulation of warm air on
                                                             the premises.

                                                             The size of propellers in the Systemair fan heaters is com-
                                                             mensurable with the device’s heating efficiency.
                                                             The reason behind this is the well known fact that warm air
                                                             (as opposed to hot air) is easier to distribute around the
                                                             premises. In addition, to generate the same air speed, a
                                                             large fan can work at lower speeds than a small one, gen-
                                                             erating less noise and ensuring a longer service life.
                                                             Stationary (wall mounted) and portable models are simple
                                                             to install and operate.

separately. It is applied if the FHWF filter section is not
used. For its installation, the front and back panels are
removed and the filter is placed before the heat coil on
special guides.

To shift the air flow sideways, additional FHWADshutters
must be used. The basic design of the fan heater only
includes up-down directing air shutters. The FHWAD sec-
tion is mounted on top of the standard shutters and is fixed
with screws.

Ceiling mounting
Ceiling mounting is performed in a similar way to wall
mounting. When an FHW fan heater is equipped with filter
and recirculation sections, they are attached to one anoth-
er and then the entire device is mounted on the ceiling.
The holding capacity of the ceiling and beam material, as
well as the characteristics of the mounting fixtures, must be
appropriate for this method of installation.
Provision must be made for drainage and air removal
valves. The air valve is located in the top and drain valve is
located at the bottom of the casing. They are mounted out-
side the FHW and do not come supplied. If there is a dan-
ger of the hot water coil freezing over (such as during the
operating of the mixing chamber in winter), special external
protective automation should be installed.

Speed control
It is recommended to use external control equipment.
The air temperature is regulated via electronic thermostats:
RT 0 - 30 or SR121. RT 0 - 30 electronic thermostat is
mounted on the wall and has an inbuilt thermal sensor. The
SR 121 single-step thermostat has an on / off function and
an external round handle (with control functions).
It is recommended to use the FHWR3A controller to regu-
late the speed. The fan has two speed settings.
The FHWACT electrical actuator is used to regulate the
water circuit.

Air curtain adjustment
The operation of the air curtains are regulated by control systems, specifically designed to create the most comfortable
conditions with minimal energy consumption.

Systemair’s Portier Mini and AS air curtain models do not require additional regulating devices. Portier Mini (for small door-
ways) has an inbuilt thermostat and control panel. AS models do not have a heating element and are supplied with
mounting brackets, power cord and a plug.
For all other Systemair curtain models the necessary regulating devices are supplied as accessories.
This allows the client to choose the optimal set of controlling devices to suit his / her personal demands and the specific
conditions of the premises in question.
The speed and power level of the heat curtains can be regulated.

Airflow velocity control
In most cases a simple two- or three-step control panel is used to regulate the air velocity of the air curtains. Sometimes it
is more convenient to use controllers with a continuous range of speed settings.
The MP control panels are used to regulate the speed of models belonging to the LG, Portier Basic / Portier Basic Design
and Portier Grand / Portier Grand Design series. HDR speed controllers are designed for HD and HF air curtains.
Usually an HDR controller is used together with an HDGL gate status sensor, which significantly helps to save energy. It
is installed with the curtains from the industrial series (HD, HF and MTV) and with curtains from the PG series.

The airflow speed of MTV curtains is regulated by the REU and RE transformers. It is also possible to use an REE thyristor
to set the fan speed and air consumption (in MTV curtains).

Power level control
Curtains of LG, Portier Basic / Portier Basic Design and Portier Grand / Portier Grand Design series are most often operat-
ed via the MP22, MP32 and MP-I control panels.They allow the regulation not only of airflow velocity, but of heating
power as well. An HDEV power level controller can be used with models of the HD and HF series.
An SR12 thermostat is suitable for all air curtain models requiring additional regulating devices, with the exception of MTV
models. If the air curtains are installed in industrial facilities or have to operate under strict conditions, SR122 is used. This
thermostat is similar to SR12, but offers a higher level of protection. The MTV air curtains do not need power level con-
trollers, because they do not have a heating element. Nonetheless the model is able to provide a heating effect by force-
fully recirculating air into the work zone.

Stop and control valves
Stop and control valves must be installed on curtains with a water-based air-heating section from the LGW, PGW, HFW
and HDW series. An FHWSV20/25 ball valve is used to turn the hot water supply on and off. The water consumption rate
is regulated by the FHWAV20/25 balancing valve or an FHW2RV 2-way valve. The FHW2RV valve, FHWACT electrical
actuator and a thermostat make the minimal set of equipment needed to control the hot water consumption in terms of
the air temperature inside the premises, as set on the thermostat.

General information on fan heater control
The Systemair fan heateroperation is controlled by thermostats and regulators.

Temperature control with thermostats
The simplest and affordable method of maintaining the desired temperature in a room is by means of a so-called, two-
position thermostat, which measures the air temperature and shuts the heating element on and off, in accordance with
the selected temperature.
Thermostats offered by Systemair come equipped with an inbuilt temperature sensor, which sends its readings to the cur-
tain’s control device. However, if need be, an additional TG-K330 or TG-R630 external sensor can be installed.

One of the most important features of a thermostat is the presence of temperature differential operation (temperature
hysteresis). A thermostat, which switches on at 24 °C and off at 25 °C has a 1 °C differential. This index is crucial to stabi-
lizing the process of temperature regulation.
In order to avoid significant air temperature fluctuations, the temperature differential must no be too great.
When the heating elements are regulated by means of contactors, a very small differential will cause a frequent switching
on and off, leading to faster degradation of the contactors and an excessive noise level at the premises.

Capillary and electronic thermostats
There are several types of thermostats. Thermostats equipped with a capillary tube work on the principle of thermal
expansion of a fluid. Such thermostats have suitable accuracy and are not very expensive. In most cases they provide a
sufficient regulation of air temperature at the premises.
Electronic thermostats are more expensive, but have two important advantages. They allow the setting of the desired
temperature and regulate the temperature differential with high precision.

Both the SR121 capillary and RT 0 - 30 electronic thermostats are designed to maintain a set temperature by controlling
a motor with a single power setting. The difference between them is that RT 0 - 30 operates from a 230 V power circuit,
while SR121 does not need electricity to operate. On top of that, an electronic thermostat has a lower level of protection
than SR121. This makes an electronic thermostat unsuitable for most warehouses and premises with a polluted environ-
ment.

The SR122 multi-stage thermostat is often used at industrial premises. It regulates the two speed settings of the fan. For
highly powerful heating systems, it is often impractical to simply switch full power on and off. It is far better to break the
fan heater’s total functional capacity down into 2 or more fractions and deploy them in a progressive manner when
needed. This method allows some of the load to be taken off the circuit, while maintaining significant heating power.

Air consumption and temperature control
Systemair recommends using the FHWR3A and FHWR3 three-step regulators to control the air consumption of a fan
heater. These devices can control up to 6 fan heaters. In order to control the heating a thermostat, a system of valves or
a FHW2RV two-way valve and an FHWACT valve actuator must be installed.

RE series five-step transformers are used to regulate the air consumption of Systemair fan heaters. They are designed to
manually regulate the air consumption of one or two hot-water-based fan heaters. To successfully control the air tempera-
ture, a thermostat and a system of valves or a two-way valve and a valve actuator must be used together with an RE

Regulating the water consumption rate with a thermostat
To regulate the water consumption rate in Systemair fan heaters, the following components must be installed: an FHW2RV
two-way valve (or a system of valves) and an FHWACT valve actuator. A thermostat (such as RT 0 - 30 or SR121, 122) is
needed to operate the FHW2RC valve with an FHWACT actuator.
To simplify the set up and technical servicing of the water consumption in the system, stop and control valves can be
installed. An FHWSV stop valve can be used to cut off the water supply to the heating coil during technical servicing of
the device, while the FHWAV control valve is used to limit the water consumption if pressure in the hot water circuit
becomes too high.
