                                                                      When Adar comes, joy is increased. That is the motto of the Jewish people during this time of
                                                                      year and we have just had the opportunity to experience it twice. With the Jewish leap year
                                                                      upon us we get two months of Adar. This really is a joyful time of year for us. We get the
                                                                      opportunity to celebrate Purim and Passover within a month of each other. Both holidays
                                                                      commemorate us overcoming incredible odds to defeat our enemies and to survive. We didn’t
                                                                      succeed because we were so much stronger or smarter than our enemies. We succeeded
                                                                      because we persevered. We never gave up even though it was evident for all to see that we
                                                                      “could not win”. I remember a quote from the book, The Source, when someone asked a Jew
                                                                      in 1948 how they succeeded in taking back Israel. He simply said “because we had to”. When
                                                                      our backs are against the wall, we do what we have to do. For me, it is one of the greatest
                                                                      parts of being Jewish. I am part of a group that never gives up even against incredible odds
                                                                      and always strives to be the best that they can be. Purim is over for this year and Passover is
                                                                      coming. Another year is unfolding and we still remember what has gone before and we know
                                                                      that our memory of previous events and our celebration of our successes and mourning of our
                                                                      losses are important. It keeps us connected to each other. It gives us the opportunity to teach
                                                                      these things to our children so that they will be connected. In the spring we are renewed and
                                                                      Passover is the start of it. We have survived the winter and joy is here. We have made it to a
                                                                      new beginning, when the earth throws off the cloak of winter and green comes back to the
                                                                      world in which we live. The darkness is receding and we feel reinvigorated. I am overjoyed
                                                                      that all of us in my family will be able to sit down at the Passover table and recount our
                                                                      blessings again. My family and I would like to extend our best wishes for a joyful Passover and
                                                                      hope that this spring will bring you renewal.

                                                                                         It’s official: Jewish camp strengthens Jewish identity

                                                                                                                                                   SAN FRANCISCO (JTA) -- Hundreds of thousands of Jewish
                                                                                                                                                   camp alumni -- and their parents -- have long known that those
                                                                                                                                                   halcyon weeks spent at Jewish summer camp don’t just cement
                                                                                                                                                   lifelong friendships, they strengthen Jewish identity.
                                                                                                                                                   Now they have it in writing.
                                                                                                                                                   A new study on the long-term impact of Jewish overnight camp
                                                                                                                                                   concludes that those who have attended camp are more
                                                                                                                                                   Jewishly engaged as adults, according to 13 key variables, than
                                                                                                                                                   those who did not go to camp.
                                                                                                                                                   “We finally have a tool that proves Jewish camp works, that it

                                                                                         2000-2001 National Jewish Population Survey, to produce the first statistical look at the effect of Jewish
                                                                                         camping on individual as well as communal Jewish identity. The report shows the most pronounced
                                                                                         increase in Jewish engagement in four areas not typically associated with non-Orthodox Jewish behavior.
                                                                                         Three of them have to do with Jewish communal identity: Camp alumni are 55 percent more likely than
                                                                                         Jewish adults who did not attend camp to say they are “very emotionally attached to Israel"; they are 45
                                                                                         percent more likely to attend synagogue at least once a month; and 30 percent more of them donate to
                                                                      Jewish federations.
                                                                                            This is significant, says lead researcher Steven M. Cohen, director of the Berman Jewish Policy Archive
                                                                                         at NYU Wagner. “Where camp has had its strongest effect has to do with its creation of an intense,
                                                                                         temporary Jewish community,” said Cohen.
                                                                                         That communal experience imprints on the individual, he surmised, leading to a greater propensity to view
                                                                                         one’s self within a larger Jewish social network in adulthood.
            The other 10 areas of investigation also revealed increased Jewish engagement among camp alumni, from a
                                                                                         37 percent increase in those who “always/usually” light Shabbat candles to a 5 percent increase in the
                                                                                         number of those who “always/usually” light Chanukah candles. These 10 areas are related to an individual
                                                                                         sense of Jewish identity.
                                                                                         Camp’s impact is more pronounced among non-Orthodox Jews under 49 than their elders, the report notes.
                                                                                         That’s probably not because more young Jews have gone to camp, Cohen speculates, but because more
                                                                                         options are open to Jews today than in previous generations, and fewer of today’s American Jews live in a
                                                                                         primarily Jewish environment.
                                                                                         Jewish day schools and youth groups also have a strong impact on Jewish identity, Cohen notes. But
                                                                                         similar data studies have not been performed for these two institutions, so the evidence is mainly anecdotal,
                                                                                         as it was for camping until now.
                                                                                         “The answer to the question of how do we keep our kids Jewish is not so mysterious,” he concluded.

                                                                                         Not surprisingly, Fingerman hopes the report will encourage foundations and philanthropists to open their
                                                                                         wallets and increase their financial support for Jewish overnight camps.
                                                                                         “It should also be compelling to local federations looking for the best use of their dollars,” said Fingerman,
                                                                                         who spent eight summers at Wisconsin’s Camp Ramah in the 1970s and now sends his own children to

                                                                    On December 14th, Temple Emanuel hosted the Ulster County Chamber Mixer. The event was a huge success thanks to all of the
                                                                    volunteers who participated. With a few cosmetic tweaks, generous restaurant and food contributions, beautiful decorations and
                                                                    fabulous music, chamber members had the opportunity to visit our space while schmoozing & dancing.

                                                                    Bingo continues to thrive and we are always in need of additional volunteers. There is one volunteer in particular that we would like to
                                                                    acknowledge. Ninety one year old George Svirsky travels from Ulster Park each and every week to do his part to help make Bingo
                                                                    run efficiently. During our Wednesday’s with him, we learned that George had never become a Bar Mitzvah. As you well know, it is
                                                                    customary in the Jewish religion for boy or girl of 13 to experience this rite of passage.

                                                                    The Brotherhood of Temple Emanuel will be honoring Mr. George Svirsky of Ulster Park as he will be called to the Bimah to at last
                                                                    become a Bar Mitzvah. Please join us on Saturday, April 30th at 10:00AM, to participate in this extraordinary event at our synagogue,
                                                                    and of course all are welcome to the Kiddush afterwards. A “Tailgate” reception will follow that; see below.
                                                                    George Svirsky was born on November 13, 1919 in Muskegon, MI. His family moved to Ulster Park, NY in 1921 where his parents owned
                                                                    & operated a farm and later opened the Esopus Lake Hotel. In 1932, Temple Emanuel was located near the strand (now Bridgewater’s
                                                                    Irish Pub & Restaurant). The bridge that currently spans Port Ewen and Kingston had not been built, and the only way young George
                                                                    could have come to the synagogue was by boat. Sadly, his parents did not have the resources to send George to Bar Mitzvah lessons.
                                                                    In 1937, George graduated from Kingston High School. His college years were spent at Albany School of Pharmacy, followed by 5 years
                                                                    in the United States Navy. His professional career began in 1947 in uptown Kingston on Wall Street. In 1970, he married the love of his
                                                                    life, Becky and has two daughters, Kim & Jackie.

                                                                    George has always been involved in our community. In 1964 he was awarded the Community Service Award by the Kingston Newspaper
                                                                    Guild. At that time, he became vice president of the Kingston Area Chamber of Commerce. In 1965, he became the President of the
                                                                    Chamber which is now the Ulster County Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Urban
                                                                    Renewal. In 1969, he became the President of the American Cancer Society, Ulster County Unit. A true community leader!

                                                                    In honor of this monumental occasion, we encourage everyone to share this Mitzvah with George and his family as he is called to the
                                                                    Torah. George, as many of you may know, is an avid New York Giants fan. He had season tickets for close to 60 years and his seats
                                                                    have been considered the “best in the house”. Keeping with that theme, we ask you to come celebrate with us at “George’s Tailgate
                                                                    Party”, a festive reception with entertainment, food and music.
