-> We speak of someone having an accent when their
pronunciation deviates from the standard.
The stress may be different, vowels may be
longer/shorter, etc.

-> Everyone speaks with an accent.
-> Native speakers can recognize people from abroad
because of their accent (nearly everyone has a
accent in his second language). People tend to
pronounce words in the way of their mother tongue
instead of using the phonological rules of the second
language (e.g. French, German, Indian, etc.)
-> Even native speakers have an accent in "their“
language (dialectal influences) -> RP (Received
Pronunciation) vs. Cockney
-> Mostly noticeable in the vocalic elements, in the
glides (/j/, /w/) and the liquids (/r/, /l/)

"Just as everyone has an accent, so every form of English (or
any language) is a dialect. Where 'accent' refers to the sounds
a speaker makes, 'dialect' covers the word choices, syntactic
ordering and all the other grammatical choices a speaker
could make"

2. Dialects
- Any Language consists of dialects
- These dialects are more or less intelligible to other speakers
of the language
- Any dialect can be pronounced in any accent:
i. [Its vɛri dɜ:ti] (RP)
ii. [IɁs vɛri dɛ:tI] (northern British dialect)
- Any sentence can be expressed in any dialect (same
sentence as above):
i. Yorkshire: 'Tha's right mucky'
ii. Teesside: 'It's hacky'

- Some accents tend to accompany certain dialects.
- In common perception accents and dialects are closely
connected -> word for accent and word for dialect are often
the same (Brummie, Cockney, etc.)

- One's dialect is a part of one's identity.
- sometimes the choice of dialect over language standard
depends on the political situation (e.g. Serbo-Croatian)
- Accents and dialects that are geographically close to one
another are similar in their form.
They gradually vary the further one travels away from them
(even across national boundaries)

- 'Isoglosses' are lines on a map that separate one speach
community from another
