                                Class Descriptions
                               NURSERY (Infants – 14 months)

Cost: $20
Supplies Needed: Each child must have a diaper bag that contains wipes, diapers, pacifiers, change of
clothes, bottles, etc. Please label each item with the child’s name.


                                  WALKERS (15 – 25 months)
Teacher: Elizabeth Grant, Emily Havens, Jennifer Scruggs
Cost: $20
Supplies Needed: Each child must have a diaper bag that contains wipes, diapers, pacifiers, change of
clothes, bottles, etc. Please label each item with the child’s name.


                                 PRESCHOOL (26-47 months)
Teachers: Wendi Jackson and Misty Tolbert
Cost: $30
Description: The preschool curriculum includes a lot of hands-on activities. We’ll exercise both large
and fine motor skills playing games, doing artwork and using manipulatives. Many of our activities will
focus on kindergarten readiness skills such as visually tracking left to right and top to bottom,
sequencing, colors, shapes and numbers.
Supplies needed: All supplies will be provided during class. Kids can bring their own snack or we
provide Goldfish crackers (no candy please). Please label all sipper cups. Each child needs a diaper bag
or backpack with a complete change of clothes.

                                   PRE – K (48 – 59 months)
Teachers: Marisol Gil and Gretchen Sanchez
Cost: $30
Description: Each week of EC we will create a file folder game for the children to take home and enjoy.
We will begin with some simple tracing and then work our way through the alphabet. Mathematic
concepts will also be covered each week. Pre-reading skills will be emphasized as well as typical
preschool themes like transportation, community helpers, and the state of Texas. We will also have a
Bible story and craft each week.
Homework: Complete file folder games if not finished during class time.
Supplies needed: All supplies will be provided during class. Kids provide their own snack and drink or
we have Goldfish crackers and a drinking fountain right outside the door (please no candy). Each child
needs a backpack big enough to bring home the file folder games without crushing or folding them.
                                             Kindergarten

Description: Each hour will be divided in half, which will enable the children to experience six
different subject areas during the three hours. The Kindergarten class will begin their day learning basic
etiquette in “Manners” and exploring the world of science with “Kid Concoctions II”. Next they will
learn about music through singing and making music with instruments, and stretching their bodies with
exercise. The third hour they will be introduced to various crafts & stories from “Around the World
III”.
Supplies Needed: Please provide a labeled snack for your child each Friday. All supplies needed for the
classes will be provided. Gym shoes or sandals with straps will be needed for exercise class. Each child
should have a backpack or school bag to transport papers and projects.




                                                1st Grade

AROUND THE WORLD I

Description: Children will learn about map reading, geography and cultures from around the world.
The class will include stories, vocabulary, food, music and crafts from eight countries. Students will be
issued a “passport” to travel to the foreign countries.
Class style: hands-on with excellent listening skills a must
Supplies Needed: All supplies will be provided. Students will take home a completed notebook at the
end of the year.

BEGINNING COOKING
Teacher: Lori Bryant and Delaine Carter
Class Size: 6
Class Fee: $30
Description: Become acquainted with kitchen “stuff” and kitchen math, and learn beginning skills in
the kitchen so kids can make edible food for the family, like last year’s favorites: Sea Otter Biscuits and
Peanut Butter Balls. We will also discuss basic nutrition, safety pointers and food trivia. Many recipes
will not call for use of the stove or oven. We will eat what we prepare, too! All food, utensils and
cookware will be provided.
Pre-requisite: Desire to learn to cook and ability to focus.
Homework: Read next week’s lesson before class and practice skills at home.
Class Style: Casual and fun, but safe and attentive
Supplies Needed: Apron or old shirt (something so that Mom doesn’t yell at you for getting messed up)
and hair tie (for hair below neckline) - a must!!!


FOLDER AND MATHGAMES

Description: Let’s have some fun playing games! Kids will enjoy playing folder and math games. They
will use their basic math, grammar, geography and social studies skills while they play! Each student
will make a few folder games and have their own game kit to enjoy with their family!

LET’S GO LEGOS

Description: This fun class is designed to give students the opportunity to stretch their imagination as
they freely explore the possibilities of Lego construction.

MUSIC

Description: This will be a general elementary music education class. It will allow the students to be
introduced to the many parts of music. Students will begin to understand basic music concepts through
singing and making music with instruments. We will work to build music reading & listening skills. It
will be very “hands on learning” to channel the child’s natural enthusiasm for music through lots of
movement activities, rhythm games and fun songs.
Homework: Possible household item to collect & bring to class
Supplies Needed: Comfortable clothes & shoes for movement




PHYSICAL EDUCATION (P.E.)
Teacher: Sharon Teter and Lisa Pferdner
Class Size: Limit 20
Class Fee: $5
Description: In this class children will learn how to strengthen their muscles and cardiovascular
through physical activities (i.e. jumping jacks, running, stretching, sit ups, push ups, jump rope, sports –
basketball, soccer, volleyball). Hand eye and hand foot coordination will also be implemented as sports
are played. This class will be fun but possibly tiring and sweat producing .
Homework: No
Class Style: Interactive and physical, social and fun yet structured
Supplies Needed: Students will need to wear tennis shoes and comfortable clothes to exercise in.
Bottled water would be good to bring.

ART APPRECIATION: ATELIER V
Teacher: Lisa Kuehler/Vanesa Stenberg

Class Fee: $25
Description: Atelier is a video based curriculum for ages 4-15 specifically designed to meet the needs
of the home schooling community. This year E.C. offers Level V for grades 3rd – 5th. The goal of the
program is to teach every child how to express himself/herself through art by teaching the elements and
principles of art and drawing in a developmental and sequential way, as well as to study the art of the
other artists, cultures and historical periods. In all areas of study, the emphasis is on motivation and
self-expression. The emphasis in the first half of the year is on the understanding of art elements, and on
the development of drawing skills and painting techniques. As the year progresses, students explore
many media and are presented with lessons about artists and cultures, ending the year with the emphasis
on self-expression where the students apply all they have learned throughout the year.
Homework: Limited amount
Class Style: View a short video followed by a fun, hands-on art activity.
Supplies Needed: Pencils, erasers, empty and clean veggie can, small scissors, small package of
multicolored construction paper, black felt tip pen, 24 colored pencils (Prisma is best), glue stick,
crayons, empty Styrofoam egg carton.


CREATIVE WRITING: THE WONDER OF WORDS
Teacher: Michelle Cook
Class Size: 8
Class Fee: $15
Description: The goal of the class is to have children come to value writing as a powerful
means of expressing their ideas, thoughts, feelings and experiences . The student video
takes children on a journey to explore the power and wonder of words. Experience the excitement as you
travel with teacher, Rosie Watson beyond the confines of the classroom. The students will discover
creative techniques to bring writing to life. They will enjoy the freedom to just play with words, while
developing the skills needed for creative expression

LAPBOOKING SCIENCE (3rd-5th)
Teacher: Melissa Weeber and Karen Ashman

Description: We will be studying Basic Physical Science, Living Organisms and Forces while creating
three lapbooks throughout the year. We will be doing hands on experiments and having fun while we
learn!
Homework: No
Class Style: Hands on, good listening skills a plus!
Supplies Needed: Students will need to bring every week: pencil, scissors, glue stick, scotch tape, and
colored pencils.

INTERMEDIATE COOKING

Class Fee: $30
Description: Learn how to cook fun stuff for your family quickly and easily, like prior years’ favorites:
Remarkable Fudge and Chicken on a Stick. We will also discuss cooking tips, basic kitchen knowledge
and safety in the kitchen. We will eat what we cook, too! All food, utensils and cookware will be
provided. ** This class will repeat many of last year’s recipes. If the student has taken this class
before, please consider enrolling them in a new and different class to give others the opportunity to
learn new cooking skills.
Pre-requisite: Students are required to already have had Cooking I or have been taught cooking basics,
such as kitchen math, measuring, etc.
Homework: Read next week’s lesson before class and practice cooking.
Class Style: Casual and fun, but safe and attentive
Supplies Needed: Apron or old shirt (something so that Mom doesn’t yell at you for getting messed up)
and hair tie (for hair below neckline) - a must!!!

LEGO TECHNOLOGY (3rd – 8th)
Teacher: Susan Cramer and Steven Flowers
Class Size: 10
Class Fee: $25
Description: This class is taught using LEGO DACTA, Simple and motorized machines: kits and
teacher’s guide. The students will learn about structures & Forces, levers, wheels & axles, gears,
pulleys, and more mechanisms. They will work in teams of two sharing a kit. They will even get to
motorize many of their models. We build bridges, cars, conveyor belts, even merry-go-rounds. All work
is done in class and all supplies are provided. This is a fun hands-on class, but requires being able to sit
and listen, then to work with a partner sharing the building of the model. This is the same class as last
year’s Lego class, nothing new was added. Those who have NOT had the Lego class before will be
given first opportunity in signing up for this class.
Homework: None

LET’S MAKE A QUILT
Teacher: Maria Simpson
Class Size: 6
Class Fee: $20
Description: We will make one lap size quilt each semester. Both quilts will be at a beginner’s level.
Only straight stitching required.
Homework: None unless you goof off in class and don’t get enough done.
Class Style: Hands-on, technique oriented.
Supplies Needed: A sewing machine and thread (any color). Please make sure that your student knows
how to thread your sewing machine.

RAINBOW 1 SCIENCE (5th-6th)

Description: The Rainbow Year 1 curriculum is the first half of a 2-year comprehensive upper
elementary science curriculum that will provide students with weekly labs and a concept-by-concept
approach to science. Year 1 begins by concentrating on the disciplines of Physics and builds on what
the students learn to move on to the study of Chemistry. Each student should have a text, lab workbook
for year 1, and a Teacher’s guide for parental use. Equipment and renewable supplies will be ordered by
the teacher.
Homework: Yes
Class Style: Reading and Questions at home, lab work at Enrichment Classes.
Supplies Needed: Text book “The Rainbow” by Dr. Durell Dobbins, lab workbook, teacher’s guide for
parent, 3 ring binder, dividers (minimum 5), notebook paper, pencil, positive attitude.

RAINBOW 2 SCIENCE (5th -6th)
Teacher: Rhealyn Samuelson
Class Size: 8
Class Fee: $40 (includes consumable and durable goods fee)
Description: The Rainbow Year 2 curriculum is the second half of a 2-year comprehensive upper
elementary science curriculum that will provide students with weekly labs and a concept-by-concept
approach to science. We will be covering Biology in the first semester: learning concepts like cells,
microbes, botany, animals, the human body, and yes… a dissection or two. The next semester we will
examine the earth science concepts such as the study of water, meteorology, the solar system and much
more. Each student should have a text, lab workbook for year 2, and a Teacher’s guide for parental use.
Equipment and renewable supplies will be ordered by the teacher.

RECORDER CLASS

Description: Learn how to read music and play an instrument at the same time. We’ll learn how to read
notes, rhythm, keys, and different musical styles with the recorder that you can take along with you
anywhere. You will get a head-start on learning any other musical instrument.

RUBBER STAMPING (3rd – 8th)

Description: This class is designed to teach the basics of rubber stamping for grades 3-8+. We will be
making a minimum of 1 project per day. We will learn techniques such as water coloring, stamping on
tiles and fabrics, using a brayer, and working with chalks. Projects will consist of but are not limited to:
card making, stationary sets, pocket calendars, mini scrapbooks, photo albums, post-it note holders, gift
bottles, coasters, clipboards, bookmarks, hats, and much more. There will be many things to take home
and give as gifts!

Description: It’s been called a track meet for your hands at warp speed! Something you truly have to
see to believe! Students learn not only how to be physically active, but WHY; and how to take personal
responsibility for this critical aspect of their lives. Increasing bilateral proficiency (equal performance on
both sides of the body) develops a greater percentage of the right side of the brain which houses
awareness, focus, creativity and rhythm.

ADVANCED COOKING (6th-12th)

Description: Learn how to prepare main courses, side dishes and some fun desserts for your family,
including last year’s hits, Chicken Scaloppini and Fettuccine Alfredo. We will also discuss cooking tips,
advanced kitchen knowledge and safety in the kitchen. We will eat what we cook, too! All food, utensils
and cookware will be provided.
Pre-requisite: It is required that students already have had Cooking II or have had some experience
cooking in the kitchen.

ASTRONOMY – (6th – 8th)

Description: This course will be based on the “Exploring Creation with Astronomy” of the Young
Explorers Series by Apologia. Lessons will be on the nature of astronomy, and the major structures of
our solar system. The student will learn details about all nine planets in the solar system, the earth’s
moon, the asteroid belt, and the Kuiper belt: then, outside our solar system with the stars and galaxies.
Finally, we will study space travel and what it takes to be an astronaut! Many other books and
supplements will be used in this course.
Homework: Yes, 1-2 hours per week

first day.

CREATIVE WRITING
Teacher: Wayne Tolbert

Description: This class will utilize Rosie Watson's writing techniques to encourage young writers to
take pleasure in exploring the Wonder of Words. Students will be taught how to create an environment
that will nurture creativity, techniques to simplfy the writing process and make it fun, and awaken the
powers of observation. A 10 minute lesson on grammar will be given at the beginning of each class
period.

CROCHET (6th -12th)

Description: In this class we will learn how to crochet the first semester and knit the second semester.
All of the basic stitches will be learned and some fancy ones if the kids progress

Supplies needed: None for now. You may need to get supplies for a particular project that your own
child wishes to make, but all of the basic supplies for learning will be provided.

DRAWING I - (6th-12)
Teacher: Jonee Paul

Class Fee: $15 (includes all supplies)
Description: The objective is to guide students in the development of their artistic talents. I do this by
first teaching students how to acquire the visual perception of an artist. The individual style of each
student grows as they explore a different media, artistic styles, and techniques. Encouragement and
positive approach to discipline all aide in providing students with the confidence needed to express
individual creativity.
Homework: No
Supplies Needed: None. I will provide everything and let you know if we do any projects that require
anything special.

GENERAL SCIENCE – (7th – 8th)

Description: This course is designed to be a student’s first systematic introduction to the sciences. It
covers such topics as the scientific method, designing experiments, simple machines, archaeology,
geology, paleontology, biology, human anatomy and physiology. The Apologia General Science book
by Dr. Jay Wile is the textbook that will be used. Parents are encouraged to get the textbook and
solution/test manual. There will be homework assigned.

JEWELRY and BEADING (6th and up)

Description: We will begin with basics and progress through more complicated projects during the
year. Great if you have little or no experience in beading. Some of the projects include earrings, lariat
necklace, bracelets, barefoot sandals, book marks, and key chains.

Supplies Needed: Basic jewelry kit including needle nose pliers and crimper, storage box for their
supplies.

LEGO ROBOTICS (6th – 9th)

Description: Learn logic, design and programming skills while building your robot to life. This class
will use LEGO Mindstorm to provide students with a hands-on introduction to engineering, robotics and
problem solving. Material: LEGO Mindstorm Team Challege set & Race Against Time Activity

Description: This class involves teaching how to take notes, prepare for teacher made test and a little
on standardized tests. We will learn “how to learn” the material we are studying.

GIRLS VOICE/ENSEMBLE CLASS – (ages 13 & up)
Teacher : Lara Harris
Class Size : 8
Class Fee : $10
Description : Beginning students will be accepted, but it would help to have basic music reading skills
to enter this class. The student will develop an understanding of the voice and how to produce a quality
vocal tone. Basic concepts of posture and breathing will be covered. During lessons, we will work on
sight-reading using sol-fege syllables, beginning theory, basic vocal techniques and preparing a
memorized song to be performed at the end of year program. Other performance opportunities might
include the Friday morning assemblies. Students will begin with an assigned ensemble piece working on
harmonization. If time allows, solo pieces will be given as well. Language & Style of songs will vary
depending on the make up of the class.
Homework : Yes. Students are expected to practice their music outside of the lesson time using their
own piano skills or accompaniment CD provided. Memorization of songs is required. Theory
worksheets will usually be done during class.
Supplies Needed : A small 3-ring binder for music and theory papers, and a pencil. A heart that is
open to having fun and taking some risks in performing in front of others.
                                            GRADES 9 – 12
ADVANCED DRAWING

Pre-Requisite: Student should have taken Drawing I with Mrs. Paul or have teacher’s approval
Description: This year we will be continuing on our journey to learn more about drawing and painting.
Each student will begin to work more independently by choosing their own subjects. I will guide
each student with their art at their own pace.
Supplies Needed: Each student should have the basic supplies which they already have from previous
year.(pencil, Prismacolor colored pencils,sharpener,etc)Please put them in a box of some sort so they
can come to class prepared. If the do not have what they need I will not be able to have EVERYTHING
FOR EVERYBODY since they will all be working on different projects. I will help each student with the
supplies at the beginning of each new project. Supplies will depend on the individual's project so will
change as the year goes forward.

ADVANCED WRITING – (9th & up), (Prerequisite - Essay Writing)
Teacher: Kristi Ferguson
Class Size: 8
Class Fee: $12
Description: Students will develop confidence and proficiency in writing, as they create short
autobiographies, descriptions, persuasive papers (including a mini-research paper), comparison-contrast
essays, literary analysis papers, and book reviews. They will be required to read one novel between
semesters, as the basis for their literary writing. They will practice the entire writing process, including
prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Students will also become familiar with MLA
format and the documenting of sources.
Homework: Yes
Class Style: Lecture and class discussion, with occasional hands-on and group activities.
Supplies Needed: A three-ring binder, 8 dividers, notebook paper, pencils or pens, access to a
computer (not required, but very helpful!), a pocket folder with brads, two highlighters in different
colors.

BIOLOGY
Teacher: Karen Ashman

Description: Exploring Creation Through Biology, by Dr. Jay L. Wile, covers topics including

written for home schoolers and is from a Christian worldview. The students will have the opportunity to
participate in lecture, labs, collections, and dissections. This is a two hour class, with one hour of lecture
and one hour of lab.
Homework: Reading and lab reports; work is assigned before classes start and during breaks as well.

Supplies needed: Textbook, three-ring binder, dividers (minimum 5), notebook paper, unlined drawing
paper, pencil with eraser, colored pencils.

CHEMISTRY (10th)

Description: High School Chemistry will be taught from the Apologia’s Exploring Creation with
Chemistry, 2nd Edition, written by Dr. Jay Wile. This class is a 2-hour lab/lecture class, with classes
scheduled outside of EC also. Students will be required to read and finish all assignments and
participate in lab. The student needs to have completed Algebra I in order to complete the work
involved.

Class Style: Reading and Questions at home, lab work at Enrichment Classes
Supplies Needed: Textbook, 3-ring binder, dividers (minimum 5), notebook paper, pencil and
calculator.

CROCHET (6th -12th)
Teacher: Maria Simpson/Vanesa Stenberg
Class size: 6
Class fee: $20
Description: In this class we will learn how to crochet the first semester and knit the second semester.
All of the basic stitches will be learned and some fancy ones if the kids progress
Homework: none
Class style: definitely hands on.
Supplies needed: None for now. You may need to get supplies for a particular project that your own
child wishes to make, but all of the basic supplies for learning will be provided.

JEWELRY and BEADING (6th and up)
Teacher: Kathleen Chambers
Class Size: $10
Class Fee: $30
Description: We will begin with basics and progress through more complicated projects during the
year. Great if you have little or no experience in beading. Some of the projects include earrings, lariat
necklace, bracelets, barefoot sandals, book marks, and key chains.
Homework: No.
Class Style: Hands on
Supplies Needed: Basic jewelry kit including needle nose pliers and crimper, storage box for their
supplies.

LEGO ROBOTICS (6th – 9th)
Teacher: Samuel Fung
Class Size: 12
Class Fee: $65
Description: Learn logic, design and programming skills while building your robot to life. This class
will use LEGO Mindstorm to provide students with a hands-on introduction to engineering, robotics and
problem solving. Material: LEGO Mindstorm Team Challege set & Race Against Time Activity

SPANISH I
Teacher:        Tamara Barrett
Class Fee:      $125 includes curriculum and 4 extra weeks of class
Description: Students will begin learning the Spanish language. The class will include conversation,
verb conjugation, vocabulary, translation, culture, and a lot of practice using Spanish. Students will
have a strong foundation in the language.
Class Style: Speaking, listening, reading, and writing. This will be a very fast paced class.
Supplies Needed:       Curriculum is provided. Students will need a notebook, index cards and zip lock
bag (for flash cards).

SPANISH II

SPEECH & DEBATE

Description: The fall semester will be spent doing Toastmasters Youth Leadership Training. This
involves prepared speeches, impromptu speaking, and general communications. The second semester we
will work on debate with the grand finale being a debate.
Homework: Yes.
Supplies Needed: pen/pencil, paper, folder


STUDY HALL will be offered each hour for those 6th – 12th graders that choose to sign up for that
