A Story About Feelings
A Wasted Breath (2 videos) (19 min.) (Middle School & Older) Youths, aged
approximately 13-18, describe negative consequences of their past inhalant use. Those
consequences include physical, mental, emotional, and social impairment: brain damage,
lung damage, poor recall, school failure, vision deterioration, lack of energy, learning
problems, family problems, and lost goals. Their stories are juxtaposed by shots of a
speaker showing factual information with elementary-aged students, and with pictures of
newspaper clippings of death notices from inhalant abuse. Ends with teens talking about
how they say no now, and demonstrating alternatives to drug use.

whose usage of alcohol and other drugs at a party results in severe medical problems,
leaving her indefinitely comatose. It also shows the effects of this incident on family and

America in Jeopardy _ (20 minutes) (targeted audience: workers, primarily in 18_30-age
range). Film format alternates between narrator's factual explanations and personal stories
told by former drug abusers. Depicts a variety of potential negative consequences for the
abuser, his/her coworkers, and his/her employer. Establishes one doesn't have to be
addicted to experience such negative consequences. Closes with information about current
laws/attitudes, the effectiveness of treatment, helping responses, and the importance of

Addiction is a disease that affects a person physically, psychologically, and socially. In this
tape, Gorski describes how the toxic effects of alcohol and drugs on the brain cause
psychological and social problems to develop as a consequence of use. The long term
after-effects of chronic alcohol and drug poisoning (known as post acute or protracted
withdrawal) as well as methods for managing these symptoms are presented. (one video

Adolescent audience. Depicts a sixteen-year-old female struggling with issues related to
peer pressure and choices and consequences. Dream scenes, after reading A Tale of Two

Can You Tell Me How To Decide? (8 minutes) (Early elementary) Toby, a puppet, is
encouraged by a friend to drink beer. Before making the decision about whether or not to
drink, Toby reflects on what he's learned about decision making. The steps he reviews
include stopping to think, listing choices, picking the best choice, and doing the choice.
Toby then applies these steps to the decision about drinking and chooses not to drink.

1-Children of Denial - 28 minutes (Adult) Video about youngsters, adolescents, and adults as children
of alcoholics. Children of alcoholics are affected by their parents' alcoholism and/or chemical dependency.
Dr. Black examines what happens to children and offers some answers.
2-Roles - (30 minutes) (adult audience) Black explains that children in alcoholic homes seldom learn the
combination of roles, which mold healthy personalities. Instead, they become locked into roles based on
their perception of what they need to do to "survive" and to bring some stability to their lives. Children in the
alcoholic family system assume roles, which make life easier and less, painful for them. Typically, these
children tend to adopt one, or a combination of four roles: Responsible, Placater, Acting Out, Adjuster.
3-Process of Recovery - (30 minutes) (adult audience). Adults raised in alcoholic/drug abusing
families have difficulty asking for what they want, difficulty trusting, and difficulty identifying or expressing
feelings. This video is designed to help recognize how your present life is influenced by your past; allows
you to release the parts of the past you'd like to put behind you; enable you to take responsibility for how you
live your life today.

by teenagers from D.C. Everest High School features interviews with a teenage recovering
addict, a mother whose son began using at an early age, emergency medical technicians,
district attorney, sheriff, physician, social worker, AODA treatment therapist, emergency
dept. Nurse, and a school guidance counselor. Speaks to teens in their own language.
Video was filmed in north central Wisconsin, and scenes are representative of smaller cities
and rural settings.

Cruel Spirits - Alcohol & Violence (32 minutes) (High school _adult). Depicts a host of
problems related to alcohol abuse affecting individuals, families, and society. Emphasis is
placed on the connections between alcohol and violent behaviors, including car crashes,
child abuse, suicides, individual criminal acts, crowd disruptions. The high cost of alcohol
abuse, both in dollars and human lives, is portrayed. (see front office for video as well)
Death in the West (35 min.) (Middle School - Adult) This 1976 British expose of the
Marlboro cigarette campaign was legally banned after Philip Morris took producer to court.
The documentary, which resurfaced and was aired in California in the 1980's, contrasts the
fate of six real cowboys who smoke with the images featured in the Marlboro ads. Lung
cancer, emphysema, and heart disease are described in the real cowboy smokers. Findings
from the World Health Organization and the Cancer Institute are juxtaposed with comments

individual stories about teenagers of DeGrassi Junior High; teenage pregnancy and sexual

Denial? Not Me - (30 minutes) (16 _ adult) Depicts how denial allows alcoholism to
continue and increases understanding of chemical dependency and its effects on family
members. Focuses on female attending her first Al_Anon meeting and reflecting on her own

Desiree' - A Personal Tragedy - (24 minutes). Drinking and Driving Desiree's father was
killed in a drinking related accident; focuses on the effects on the family.
Detachment with Love - (22 minutes) (adult audience) Depicts an adult male attending
first Al-Anon meeting. Initially skeptical and reluctant, he ends up listening and recognizing
familiar problems faced by affected others. General information about family alcoholism
provided through member‟s stories; the concept of detachment is stressed. (2 videos)
Developmental Model of Recovery - (31 minutes) (adult audience) Recovering people
need a practical "road map" to recovery, and this video provides it. Based on his clinical
counseling and research, Mr. Gorski describes the recovery process as a progression
through six concrete periods. Each period has a major goal and specific tasks required to
meet each goal. According to Gorski, failure to successfully complete any major recovery
task can weaken the strength of the total recovery program. The result can be a cycle of

Drinking for Two – (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome) a story of a young pregnant woman who was
pulled in by the lie that drinking and smoking during her pregnancy was “no big deal.”
Today, her son Kameron, an innocent victim of fetal alcohol syndrome, stands as the
embodiment of that horrible lie. Unable to speak for himself, Kameron‟s adoptive mom
graphically discloses what it‟s like to walk in Kameron‟s shoes. His biological mother, who is
now working in a program of progress through Alcoholics Anonymous, also shares her pain
and her guilt. She offers her experience, strength, and hope to other students who are
sexually active and relives her testimony for the benefit of their unborn.

Drug Free Kids: A Parents Guide - (70 minutes) (Junior high _ adult) An educational and
entertaining program designed especially to help parents identify and deal with the urgent
problem of childhood drug abuse. Concrete communication skills and prevention strategies
are presented.
Drug Profiles-The Physical and Mental Aspects - (28 minutes - adult audience).
Discusses physical and mental aspects of chemical use: teaches how to recognize &
understand methods of abuse, psychological effects, & common symptoms of abuse of the
following drugs: cocaine, marijuana, amphetamines, barbiturates, methaqualone,

Hooked? Not Me!: - (33 minutes) (Adolescent audience) Denial and ignorance are
addressed in this video. It uses a variety of dramatized situations involving three
adolescents who are hooked on alcohol, pot, and cocaine. An integral part of the video is
an on-screen test consisting of 18 questions, designed to help student viewers determine if
they have a drug problem. The test can also be used to encourage students to examine
and discuss their own attitudes about drug use. IT SHOULD BE STRESSED THAT

three children affected by alcohol abuse of parents. The three portray differing roles and
situations, but find they have much in common. Strategies for breaking no talk rules and
help self are explored.

we understood him.
Step 4 Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
Step 5 Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact
nature of our wrongs.
Step 6 Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
Step 7 Humbly asked Him to remove out shortcomings.
Step 8 Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make
amends to them all.
Step 9 Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to
do so would injure them or others.
Step 10 Continued to take personal inventory, and when we were wrong,
promptly admitted it.
Step 11 Sought through prayer, and meditation to improve our conscious
contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will
for us and the power to carry that out.
Step 12 Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried
to carry this message to addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Understanding (15 minutes) (Adolescent/adult Audiences) State of Wisconsin video
explaining effects of alcohol and drug use during pregnancy. Women describe their
relationships with chemicals during their pregnancies; some abstained and some kept
using. Medical personnel explain possible effects of the use of chemicals on the fetus.
Video explains the difficulty of change and challenges individuals to share information,
arrange intervention, offer support and caring, refer, or call an agency for advice if they
are concerned about a pregnant woman using drugs. (2 videos)
Understanding Addiction - (28 minutes) (Sr. High, college, adult) Noted author
Roberta Meyer conducts an imaginative and visual tour through a `life gallery' in this
discussion and portrayal of addiction. The video follows three friends from their student
days into their adult lives. All three have distinctly different reactions to the alcohol and
drugs they use. The video gives poignant and realistic views of the effects of addiction
on family and friends and a good description of Employee Assistance Programs and
interventions as the alcoholic seeks sobriety. Very helpful steps are outlined so that the
viewer will not only understand addiction, but also know what to do about it.
Up in Smoke _ (58 minutes) (Junior high through college). This video presents the
history of smoking in Western society, explains the chemical make up of tobacco and
gives a description of its damaging effects on the body. Enumerates the social and
personal influences on someone who is trying to decide whether or not to smoke and
provides information about how to stop smoking. (2 videos)

adolescent/adult) Through narration, interviews, and dramatization, INSIDE/OUT
examines (a) the feelings inside oneself leading to and resulting from violence, and (b)
violence experienced externally in the home, school, society and environment in general.

Part I: Understanding Violence defines violence, showing the role of feelings in
violent behavior, e.g., feelings of frustration, loneliness, sadness, and particularly
anger.
Part II: Preventing Violence discusses prevention of violence, focusing on the
consequences of violent behavior, the importance of dealing with anger and
other feelings, and the role of alcohol, drugs, and guns and gangs in the cycle of
violence.
Part III: Coping with Violence, is a guide to coping with violence, emphasizing
the importance of basic safety strategies and conflict management including
mediation skills. It addresses the role of stereotypes - sexual and racial - in the
