Selection Committee
Ann S. Kheel Scholars Program in Community Service
City College of New York

Dear Selection Committee:

Please consider me as a candidate for a Kheel Scholarship. I am currently a sophomore
education major, with a GPA of 3.1.

I have volunteer experience that I believe demonstrates my commitment to public service
and public policy. Over the past two years, I have been tutoring fifth-grade students in
math at the Howard Benchmark School in Queens. The scholarship would make it much
easier for me to continue my work at the school at the same time that I am working
towards my BA at City College. Through my tutoring, I have become increasingly aware
of the special challenges faced by inner city schools. The experience has deepened my
long-standing interest in education and a career in elementary school administration. The
experience has also taught me important lessons and skills that will make me a good
representative of the Kheel program if I am selected. Among other things, I have learned
the importance of organization, teamwork, good communication, and meeting deadlines.
I have also participated in a number of summer workshops for aspiring urban educators.

I believe my course work also demonstrates by commitment to public affairs and
community involvement. I have taken courses in urban issues, the history of New York
City, and inner city education policy. In each of those I earned a grade of A.

I would also like to draw the selection committee’s attention to some other relevant
qualifications. I am fluent in both Spanish and Portuguese. I was also VP of my high-
school student government, which I believe demonstrates my potential for leadership.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
