Chief Executive Officer


WPF Therapy is one of the UK’s largest providers of not for profit counselling and
psychotherapy, and professional counselling and psychotherapy training. It has been a
market leader for the last 40 years pioneering new therapy models. WPF Therapy
serves a diverse pan London community and is well respected by the NHS and the
profession. Many of its Managers have leading roles in other key organisations within
the profession.
WPF Therapy is part of the WPF Group which comprises three entities:

      WPF Therapy which offers psychoanalytic, psychodynamic, group analytic,
       CBT, and other forms of therapy providing over 500 sessions per week plus
       professional training to postgraduate level for over 200 students per annum.

      The National Network of 28 independent counselling centres across the
       country.

      The Foundation for Psychotherapy and Counselling (the professional body for
       graduates of WPF Therapy’s professional trainings).


The CEO is also Director of the National Network.
The FPC is an independent company, managed by a committee, but works closely with
WPF Therapy.
The three entities have their headquarters at WPF Therapy’s premises in SE1. WPF
Therapy sees over 500 clients per week in SE1, and between WPF Therapy and the
National Network they offer therapy to approximately 6,000 clients per week.
Over 670 students, trainees and work shop participants attend the professional
trainings, professional development and CPD workshops and courses every year.

The CEO is supported by 3 Directors that together form the Senior Management Team.
A PA works to the CEO for 3/5 and for the National Network as Administrative
Coordinator for 2/5. The CEO reports to the Board of Trustees. In addition to SMT
members there are 26 office based staff (12 Managers, 14 administrative staff) and 85
non-office based staff such as part time teaching and clinical staff. In addition there are
approximately 42 clinically qualified part time volunteers and 200 people in part time
work placements. WPF Therapy has a fairly flat structure.

The current CEO apportions her time on different areas as follows:

Job Description


OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE POST


The role of the Chief Executive Officer is to provide WPF Therapy with inspiring
leadership, passion, creativity and vision. The CEO will be primarily responsible for
the development of this important charity in its new location over the next crucial
years. Reporting to the Council of Management, and managing the Directors of
Departments (currently 3) who are responsible for all functions, s/he will maintain and
develop WPF Therapy’s professional reputation and standing, while ensuring a balance
between income and expenditure, including fundraising for new projects and future
security.
This is an exciting and challenging opportunity for an experienced professional
executive to lead this renowned major charity, at a time when Government regulations,
and the emergence of new forms of therapy, are changing the face of the profession in
ways that cannot yet be fully foreseen.


ACCOUNTABILITY


The CEO will be accountable to the board of trustees (Council of Management). The
Trustees will set measurable targets for the CEO.


KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Overall Responsibilities:

      Promoting WPF Therapy’s charitable mission to offer high quality counselling
       and psychotherapy at affordable rates to those who need it

      Ensuring the organisation’s future financial viability

      Raising the standing and influence of WPF Therapy and of counseling and
       psychotherapy in general in the wider world

      Maintaining the standard of WPF Therapy’s training at both academic and
       clinical levels

      Building and sustaining the reputation of WPF Therapy for excellence in
       training, and in counseling and psychotherapy

      Ensuring that WPF Therapy fulfils its commitment to continuing research
       within its professional field.

      As National Director for the WPF Therapy National Network, the CEO takes
       responsibility for leading the National Network in conjunction with the Chair of
       the National Network Committee.


Specific Responsibilities:

The CEO of WPF Therapy is answerable to the Council of Management/Board of
Trustees. S/he will:

      Be responsible to the Council of Management for strategic direction, to ensure
       that WPF Therapy is best able to deliver its charitable mission and purpose.

      Focus on fundraising and grant applications.

      Develop and oversee the implementation of plans to promote the work of WPF
       Therapy and to maintain and raise its public and professional profile.

      Manage a paid workforce of mostly academic training and clinical staff of over
       100 people with an annual salary budget of circa £1m and a further 40
       volunteers and honorary therapists as well as approximately 200 people in work
       placements.

      Review WPF Therapy’s organisation and management structure and ensure that
       it remains appropriate to WPF Therapy’s changing needs

      Develop and present annual and medium term plans and budgets congruent with
       WPF Therapy’s mission and charitable objectives.

      Manage the Directors and approve their key tasks, plans and budgets; review
       their progress against plans and monitor their development, performance and
       terms of employment

      Liaise and co-operate with FPC to enhance the reputation of both bodies
       wherever possible.

      Oversee the health and vitality of the National Network of 28 local centres.

      Ensure that WPF Therapy is properly regarded and supported by key
       institutions and individuals on whose support and goodwill it depends,
       including in particular the profession’s umbrella bodies, BPC, UKCP and
       BACP. The CEO will ensure that WPF Therapy is appropriately represented at
       all relevant meetings and conferences of these bodies.

      Co-ordinate and write an annual business plan for the organisation.

      Write an annual review in conjunction with the Trustees.

    Ensure that there is correct reporting to all statutory bodies such as the Charities
     Commission and Companies House.

      Be aware of emerging government initiatives and policies developing key
       relationships with Department of Health and NHS agencies.

      Undertake other duties which, from time to time, shall be requested by the
       Council of Management.

Person Specification


Qualifications

The post requires a degree or equivalent, ideally in a relevant professional discipline.
Psychodynamic counseling or psychotherapy training is not essential.

Experience

Candidates should have at least three years recent previous experience in a senior
management role in a Charity with professional aims and staff, or as a senior manager
in a business or professional service firm with a turnover of over £1M.
Candidates should have had several functions reporting to them, have had profit
responsibility, and should have managed a staff-team in a professional environment,
preferably through a process of change. They must also have had demonstrably
successful external marketing and/or fundraising experience, and experience of public
presentations and speaking.
It would be an advantage to have had first hand experience of the value of counselling /
psychotherapy either through personal experience or professional practice. Relevant too
would be teaching or management experience in academic institutions at college or
university level.

Good knowledge of statutory requirements in relation to running an organisation, to
offering services to the general public and to providing premises with public access.


Skills and Abilities

      A capacity for dynamic and articulate leadership, with strong PR skills to
       represent WPF Therapy enthusiastically to outside agencies and fundraising
       bodies

      Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with the corporate, private
       and third sector

      Ability to think strategically about the developing national professional scene
       (including coming Government regulation of the profession) and the place of
       WPF Therapy within it.

      Confidence, adaptability, drive & stamina to rise to new challenges and deliver
       results.
