North American Tires Aftermarket

Description:

Rising Material and Production Costs Escalate Replacement Tire Prices

The North American tire aftermarket for passenger cars and light trucks has experienced
reasonable gains in both unit shipment and revenues between 2000 and 2003. For 2004, unit
increases are expected to be in line with previous growth. However, mounting labor and material
costs are expected to dramatically influence the average price of light vehicle replacement tires in
North America. The average price of a replacement tire has gone up by 10 percent between 2000
and 2003. This hike can partially be attributed to the shift toward larger and higher-cost
performance tires. However, the principal cause is the price hike of raw materials such as crude oil
and escalating production costs that get transferred to the final product and also push up prices all
                through the distribution channel.

This research analyzes the passenger car and light truck tire aftermarket in the United States and
Canada. It provides a detailed view of market share shifts due to factors such as financial
circumstances and product quality. The research also discusses emerging technologies, design
trends, and product positioning trends that will assist companies in formulating strategies for
                growth.

Performance Tires Prove Profitable for Manufacturers

The tire aftermarket is very much a commodity market. Yet, manufacturers have recognized the
North American consumer’s need for aesthetically pleasing automotive products. Virtually
every tire manufacturer operating in the North American aftermarket has responded to that
consumer need with the development of performance tire lines for passenger car and light trucks.
Performance products do require large research and development funds. However, consumers are
willing to pay more for prestige brands and prestige products. Although unit sales growth has
remained moderate in North America in recent years, the increased margins from performance
products is forecast to drive annual revenues by greater than 4 percent, says the analyst.

Tire products are becoming more customized to meet the demands of specific driving enthusiast
categories. Tire manufactures have realigned their production operations making it possible for the
larger participants to rollout smaller production runs of a more diverse range of products and
                capture niche markets.

Tire Replacement Market Driven by Mobile Lifestyles of North Americans

Despite growing tire costs, unit demand continues to grow owing to the increasing number of
vehicles taking to the roads every year, notes the analyst. Tire manufacturers can anticipate a
spurt in revenue due to this demand.

The sheer size of North America and the highly mobile nature of its society positively influence the
tire aftermarket. Moreover, the general decline in road conditions due to harsher weather
conditions and the government’s lack of timely management of road infrastructure
contribute to increased tire wear and tear that translates into tire replacement.
