The George Washington University – Graduate Certificate Emergency Management and Public Health The George Washington University Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering supported by the GWU Institute for Crisis, Disaster, and Risk Management offers a Graduate Certificate in Emergency Management and Public Health. The 18-credit-hour (6 course) graduate certificate program is designed to provide an interdisciplinary graduate education for persons engaged in or seeking professional careers in crisis, disaster, and emergency management in the public, private and not-forprofit sectors. A Graduate Certificate in Homeland Security Emergency Preparedness and Response, a Master of Science in Engineering Management and a Doctor of Science in Engineering Management, with a focus in Crisis, Emergency and Risk Management are also offered (please see the description in the Doctoral and Master’s Degrees sections). Individuals may apply for the graduate certificate program by completing and submitting the GWU Graduate Admissions Application and supporting information. Application requirements for a graduate certificate program are the same as for the Master of Science in Engineering Management degree. Specific Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Department and Crisis, Emergency, and Risk Management concentration information is available at http://www.emse.gwu.edu. The Graduate Certificate in Emergency Management and Public Health requires completion of four core courses: EMSE 232 - Crisis and Emergency Management EMSE 239 - Health and Medical Issues in Emergency Management PubH 201 - Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine PubH 202 - Biostatistical Applications for Public Health Plus two additional Crisis, Emergency, and Risk Management concentration courses listed below: EMSE 230 - Homeland Security: The National Challenge EMSE 232 - Crisis and Emergency Management EMSE 233 - Information Technology in Crisis and Emergency Management EMSE 234 - Management of Risk and Vulnerability for Natural and Technological Hazards EMSE 238 - Issues in International Crisis and Emergency Management EMSE 240 - Management of Preparedness and Response to Mass Terrorism EMSE 332 - Crisis Management, Disaster Recovery and Organizational Continuity EMSE 333 - Disaster Mitigation and Recovery EMSE 334 - Environmental Hazard Management The six courses in the graduate certificate program (completed with a grade of B or better) can be applied toward a Masters of Science Degree in Engineering Management and Systems Engineering upon application and acceptance to a degree program by the School of Engineering and Applied Science.
