THIS MEETING WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL AS FAR AS A REGULAR CLUB MEETING WAS CONCERNED, PLUS
THE ADDED BENEFIT OF A COASTAL LOCATION IN THE SPRINGTIME. BUT WE HAD WANTED TO HONOR
OUR SIX SURVIVING CHARTER MEMBERS DURING THIS MEETING. BUT THE SIX WERE NOT IN THE BEST
OF HEALTH AND WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH NC WAS TOO LONG A TRIP FOR THEM AND THEIR SPOUSES. SO
WE HAD A SPECIAL PART IN OUR PROGRAM DEDICATED TO THEM AND TO THE MEMORY OF THE
SIXTEEN CHARTER MEMBERS ALREADY DECEASED. WE CREATED A RESOLUTION FOR EACH OF THEM
THANKING THEM FOR THEIR SERVICE IN CREATING AND MAINTAINING THE CLUB IN ITS EARLY
FORMATIVE YEARS. THE RESOLUTIONS WERE MAILED TO EACH ONE IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE
MEETING, AND SEVERAL NOTES OF THANKS WERE RECEIVED (SEE CHARTER MEMBERS SECTION).

PART 2: SOUTHERN 1752 CLUB MEETING SITES THROUGH THE YEARS 1939-2010

1939-1950

A PRELIMINARY MEETING TOWARD THE FOUNDING OF THE SOUTHERN 1752 CLUB WAS HELD IN LATE 1938 AT THE
ROBERT E. LEE HOTEL IN WINSTON SALEM NC. THE ACTUAL FIRST MEETING OF THE CLUB WAS HELD AT THE O’HENRY
HOTEL IN GREENSBORO NC. DURING THE FIRST DECADE OF THE CLUB FOUR MEETINGS WERE HELD EACH YEAR. MANY
OF THOSE MEETINGS WERE HELD IN THE HOTELS SHOWN BELOW:

ROBERT E. LEE HOTEL, WINSTON SALEM NC, O’HENRY HOTEL, AND KING COTTON HOTEL, GREENSBORO NC

POINSETT HOTEL, GREENVILLE SC HOTEL ROANOKE, ROANOKE VA

1950’S AND 1960’S

IN THE 1950’S WE CONTINUED WITH MOST OF THE SAME FACILITIES AS IN OUR FIRST DECADE. THE 1960’S SAW THE
END OF QUARTERLY MEETINGS IN FAVOR OF TWICE YEARLY ONES WHICH LED TO A ROTATION OF THE ANNUAL
MEETING TAKING PLACE AT A COASTAL LOCATION, ROTATING BETWEEN THE THREE CLUB STATES AND WITH THE
MIDYEAR ALWAYS IN CENTRAL NC.

1990’S

IN THE 1990’S THE CLUB ENDED ITS TRADITION OF ANNUAL MEETINGS IN COASTAL AREAS AND BEGAN TO BASICALLY
USE ONLY TWO NC LOCATIONS FOR ITS MEETINGS, ONE IN SOUTHERN PINES (ANNUAL), NC AND THE OTHER IN THE
GREENSBORO NC AREA (MIDYEAR).

                                                                                        PAGE 17

PART 3: CORRESPONDENCE WITH SURVIVING CHARTER MEMBERS OF THE SOUTHERN 1752 CLUB CONCERNING THE
44TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CLUB AND THEIR INVITATION TO THE 44TH ANNIVERSARY MEETING IN 1983

IN 1981, BY ORDER OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF THE SOUTHERN 1752 CLUB, WE WERE DIRECTED TO INVITE ALL
SURVIVING CHARTER MEMBERS OF THE CLUB TO OUR 44TH ANNIVERSARY MEETING. WITH MUCH PERSEVERANCE AND
CORRESPONDENCE, WE WERE ABLE TO DETERMINE, THAT, IN 1983, SIX OF OUR TWENTY-TWO ORIGINAL, OR CHARTER,
MEMBERS WERE STILL ALIVE. ONCE ADDRESSES WERE DETERMINED, EACH ONE WAS SENT THE FOLLOWING
INDIVIDUALLY TYPED LETTER OF INVITATION TO OUR 44TH ANNUAL MEETING IN WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH NC.

AN INVITATION WENT TO EACH OF THE FOLLOWING: PAUL DUBUC, SHELBY MUTUAL, R. H. HIATT, INDIANA
LUMBERMENS MUTUAL, CARL O. LAWTON, LITITZ MUTUAL, J. DON RANDOLPH, RANDOLPH GENERAL AGENCY,
ROBERT VAN FOSSAN, LUMBERMANS MUTUAL OF MANSFIELD, OHIO, AND HARRY R. PETREY, CENTRAL MUTUAL.
                                                                                        Page 18

PAUL DUBUC WAS LONG ASSOCIATED WITH SHELBY MUTUAL AND WAS THE FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE CLUB.

AT FIRST HE SAID THEY WOULD COME, BUT LATER SENT A NOTE OF REGRET THAT THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO COME.
HE IS THE ONLY ONE FOR WHOM A PICTURE WAS AVAILABLE.
                                                                                        Page 19

R. N. HIATT WAS LONG ASSOCIATED WITH INDIANA LUMBERMENS MUTUAL INSURANCE COMPANY OF INDIANAPOLIS
INDIANA.

AS INDICATED ABOVE, THEY WERE UNABLE TO ATTEND.

THE FOLLOWING IS FROM HARRY R. PETREY OF CENTRAL MUTUAL.

THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO MAKE IT, EITHER.
                                                                                         Page 20

NEXT ARE REGRETS FROM ROBERT VAN FOSSAN OF LUMBERMENS MUTUAL INSURANCE COMPANY OF OHIO.

ANOTHER CHARTER MEMBER WHO WAS UNABLE TO ATTEND.

CHARTER MEMBERS CARL LAWTON AND DON RANDOLPH BOTH HELPED IN GATHERING INFORMATION FOR THIS
PROJECT, BUT BOTH LATER TOLD ME THEY WOULD BE UNABLE TO ATTEND. UNFORTUNATELY, BOTH DIED IN 1984, LESS
THAN A YEAR AFTER THE MEETING. SO AFTER PAUL DUBUC CANCELLED OUT, WE HAD NO CHARTER MEMBERS TO
ATTEND THE MEETING HELD IN THEIR HONOR. BUT WE HONORED THEM IN ABSENTIA AT THE 44TH ANNUAL MEETING,
AND A MOTION WAS PASSED WITH A CERTIFICATE BEING SENT TO EACH ONE IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE MEETING.
MOST OF THESE GENTLEMEN WERE IN THEIR EIGHTIES AT THE TIME AND WERE NOT IN GOOD HEALTH. PLUS
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH WAS A GREAT DISTANCE FOR THEM TO TRAVEL. IN THEIR RETIREMENT YEARS, THE OTHER FOUR
LIVED AT GREAT DISTANCES FROM THE CLUB. THUS WE WERE NOT ADVISED OF THE DEATHS OF THESE INVITEES, BUT
GIVEN THEIR AGES, WE ASSUME THEY ARE ALL DECEASED BY NOW. BUT WE ARE FOREVER INDEBTED TO THEM AND
THEIR OTHER COLLEAGUES FOR OUR EXISTENCE.
                                                                       Page 21

FOLLOWING IS A COPY OF THE HONORARIAM SENT TO EACH SURVIVING MEMBER:

EVEN THOUGH NO CHARTER MEMBER WAS ABLE TO BE THERE, WE TRIED.

PART 4: EDUCATIONAL CLINICS FOR AGENCIES WERE THE PRIMARY ORIGINAL OBJECTIVE OF OUR MISSION AS A CLUB.
THE EARLIER WRITTEN HISTORY OF CLUB MEETINGS PAID LITTLE OR NO ATTENTION TO CLINIC ACTIVITY IN OUR THREE
STATES. UNTIL THE MID 1980’S, STATEWIDE CLINICS WERE A VITAL PART OF WHAT WE DID AS A FIELD CLUB IN NC, SC,
AND VA. HERE ARE SOME REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLES OF CLINICS FROM THOSE YEARS.

AND IN HER HISTORY OF THE PROFESSIONAL AGENTS ASSOCIATION OF VIRGINIA AND DC, HERE IS WHAT ELSIE REAMY,
FORMER LONG-TIME EXECUTIVE SECRETARY OF THAT ASSOCIATION, HAS TO SAY ABOUT THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE
SOUTHERN 1752 CLUB (AND I QUOTE):
                                                                                   Page 26

MANY MORE CLINICS WERE HELD FROM THE INCEPTION OF THE CLUB IN THE LATE THIRTIES UNTIL THE
MID EIGHTIES. THAT WAS A REMARKABLE FIFTY-YEAR SPAN OF TIME FOR AMATEUR INSTRUCTORS TO
ACCOMPLISH WHAT THEY DID ON A STATEWIDE BASIS. SINCE THE MID EIGHTIES AND THE RISE OF
ASSOCIATION SPONSORED DESIGNATION PROGRAMS SUCH AS CIC AND AAI, THE CLUB HAS DEVOTED
ITS TIME AND RESOURCES TO PROVIDING SCHOLARSHIPS TO ATTENDEES TO THOSE EVENTS. I HAVE
GAINED MY INFORMATION FROM THE MEETING MINUTES OF THE SOUTHERN 1752 CLUB AND THE
PROFESSIONAL INSURANCE AGENTS ASSOCIATION OF VIRGINIA AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. THE
CAROLINAS ASSOCIATION OF PRPOFESSIONAL INSURANCE AGENTS, WITH WHOM OUR CLUB SHARED
MANY CLINIC RELATIONSHIPS, WAS MERGED SEVERAL YEARS AGO AND THEIR RECORDS WERE NO
LONGER AVAILABLE.
