Peace/Williston FISH & WILDLIFE COMPENSATION PROGRAM 1011 - Fourth Avenue, 3rd Floor Prince George, BC, V2L 3H9 Tel: (250) 561-4906 www.bchydro.com/pwcp/ Media Advisory March 13, 2007 Internationally recognized scientist to speak about salmon recovery PRINCE GEORGE–A past Fullbright Scholar returns to the University of Northern BC this week to deliver a lecture on how to secure the future health and sustainability of wild Pacific salmon stocks. Dr. Robert T. Lackey, senior fisheries biologist at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) research laboratory in Corvallis, Oregon, will present the lecture, hosted by UNBC in partnership with the Peace/Williston Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program (PWFWCP). Dr. Lackey will talk about policy options presented in the “Salmon 2100 Project”, a joint research project that involved 33 scientists, policy analysts, and policy advocates, all well versed and experienced in salmon science and policy. “The primary goal of the Salmon 2100 Project is to identify practical options that have a high probability of maintaining biologically significant, sustainable populations of wild salmon in British Columbia, Washington, Idaho, Oregon, and California,” said Dr. Lackey. “It provides decisionmakers and the general public with a diverse set of independently-developed, practical policy prescriptions that have reasonable prospects of restoring significant wild salmon runs.” In addition to his position with the EPA, Dr. Lackey is a courtesy professor of fisheries science, and adjunct professor of political science at Oregon State University. He has taught at six North American universities and was 1999-2000 Fulbright Scholar at UNBC. Canadian by birth, Dr. Lackey earned a PhD. in Fisheries and Wildlife Science from Colorado State University. He is a Certified Fisheries Scientist and a Fellow in the American Institute of Fishery Research Biologists. “We are honoured to be able to welcome Dr. Lackey back to Prince George,” said Arne Langston, natural resources specialist with the PWFWCP. “The Salmon 2100 Project presents thoughtprovoking – and provocative – alternative policy options to the way we currently manage salmon. His lecture is sure to stimulate a lively discussion.” Dr. Lackey’s lecture takes place in UNBC Lecture Theatre 7–212 on Friday, March 16 beginning at 3:30 p.m. There will also be an opportunity to meet Dr. Lackey and PWFWCP natural resource specialists during a reception following the lecture. The lecture and reception are open to the public. The PWFWCP is a joint initiative of BC Hydro, B.C. Ministry of Environment and Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The program was established to enhance and protect fish and wildlife resources affected by the creation of the Williston and Dinosaur reservoirs in north central BC. The fish program’s mission is to provide naturally diverse and abundant fish populations in a healthy ecosystem.
