Lesson Plan
Subject: Life Processes: Plants and Flowers
Student Objectives
• Using a real plant sample, students will identify the basic parts of the flower
including the stamen, pistil, sepal, embryo, spore, and seed.
• Using a real flower sample, students will identify the basic parts of a plant
including the leaves, stems, roots, and flowers.
• Using the Digital Microscope, students will analyze these basic parts and
draw what they look like magnified.
• Students will complete a chart on flowers and plants, drawing their sample,
drawing their sample under a microscope, and identifying the basic functions
of the different parts of the plants and flower.
Virginia SOL Correlations
4.4 The student will investigate and understand basic plant anatomy and life
processes. Key concepts include
a) the structures of typical plants (leaves, stems, roots, and flowers);
b) processes and structures involved with reproduction (pollination,
stamen, pistil, sepal, embryo, spore, and seed
Materials: One Proscope Digital Microscope
and lap top, worksheets (attached), 6 plant
samples (ideally with roots), 6 flower samples,
tweezers
Intended Class Size Small group (10
students)
Time Allotment: 35 minute lesson
(enrichment activity)
Procedures
1. Give each student a plant or flower specimen and a worksheet.
2. Using an example flower and plant, review with students the basic parts of each
specimen’s anatomy and function.
3. Using their worksheets, have students identify the basic parts of the flower or
plant of their own specimen and draw their observation on worksheet (students
may pick flower/plant apart with tweezers).
4. As a group, have students bring up their various specimens examine the basic
parts of a plant/flower under a microscope.
5. Have students draw what they see under the microscope on their worksheet.
5. Have students look especially for the chloroplasts.
6. Take a picture of each image using the Digital Microscope and print for
students to attach to worksheets.
7. Have students record the function of each plant/flower part on worksheet
Assessment
1. Students will be informally assessed during the review on what they remember
about the plant/flower parts and functions.
2. Students will be formally assessed on the accuracy of their worksheets and how
well they identified the parts of their own specimen.
Accomodations/Modifications:
- Some students will require additional help (may work in partners)
