Sexually Transmitted Infections • Non-curable STI’s are caused by viruses and have no cure. They include: HPV (Human Papaloma virus), Herpes Simplex II, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). • Curable STI’s are caused by bacteria and can be cured by antibiotics, but any damage done prior to treatment is permanent. They include: Chlamydia (most common in teens!), Gonorrhea, and Syphilis. • Women often do not have symptoms because they can not see or feel inside their bodies. They must depend on their partner telling them they may be infected to get early treatment. • Did you know… – Chlamydia & Gonorrhea rates are highest among people 15-25 years old – 80% of girls and 50% of boys don’t know when they have been infected with chlamydia – Syphilis (once thought to be gone) has been on the rise in Canada since 1997 Sexually Transmitted Diseases Chlamydia Gonorrhea HSV – Herpes Simplex II HPV – Genital Warts HIV/AIDS Hepatitis Syphilis Vaginitis Signs of A Sexually Transmitted Disease • Burning in urination • Rashes, warts or sores, especially on the genitals • Pain in intercourse • Unusual discharge from the penis or vaginal opening • Itching Important Things To Remember About Avoiding An STD • Abstain from sex totally • Practice Mutual Monogamy • Practice SAFER SEX • Know the symptoms • Postpone intercourse until: – The relationship is ready – Both people want to have intercourse – You know there is no chance of disease – A condom is available Postpone or Protect!!!
